FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Runner has been translated into Portugese and is available in Brazil.

ARE YOU GOING TO WRITE SEQUELS TO ANY OF YOUR BOOKS?

Probably not. I appreciate the fact that readers ask for sequels. It's a great compliment. But I've found that most sequels aren't as good as the original, and I've also found that reading a bad sequel somehow spoils the first book. So unless a really strong idea comes to me, I'm going to shy away from sequels.

The Greatest!

When did you start writing?

When I was in high school, a friend and I would sit in the back of English class and write poems and songs in the style of Bob Dylan. We'd pass these back and forth to one another, careful to avoid the eye of our teacher. No writing in English class back then! It was the lyrics of Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Leonard Cohen that got me going with words.

Where do you get ideas?

The plot for On the Devil's Court came from Dr. Faustus, which is mentioned in the book. Heart of a Champion comes from events in my own life, as does Painting the Black. With Night Hoops, I took a sad event in my life -- I had a student involved in a fatal shooting on the Burke Gilman trail -- and made a sad story in real life come out better in fiction. High Heat--I was beaned when I was in 8th grade. I was never the player that Reese was, but after being knocked unconscious I was no player at all. Runner came to life after the events of 9/11. The horrors of terrorism were on my mind; I wanted to write about it somehow but didn't know much, so I came up with a plot that involves terrorism through disengagement. Gym Candy is about steroids and sports: the idea came straight from the headlines.

Do your books of basketball have to do with the move of blasting? NOT FAMILIAR WITH THAT TERM. ################################################### What is the theme in a heart of a champion? I'D SAY THAT THE BOOK'S THEME IS THAT LIFE CAN BE CRUEL. JIMMY ISN'T A BAD KID. LOTS OF KIDS DO STUPID THINGS AND GET AWAY WITH THEM. BUT NOT ALL KIDS. 8************************************************************* Im doing a storyboard on you becuase i love most of your books and it inspires me. But i cant find a question that i have to include on my storyboard. The question is, How do you come up with your book ideas? Can you answer this as quick as you can becuase im almost out of time. Thank you. IDEAS COME FROM MY OWN LIFE, FROM THE NEWSPAPER, FROM FRIENDS, FROM STUDENTS. I JUST HAVE MY ANTENNAE OUT ALL THE TIME FOR THINGS THAT SOUND INTERESTING. ********************************************************* Just got done reading the book runner and I need to know the theme and a quote that could relate to it. Can you help me out? SURE. THE THEME IS ABOUT RESPONSIBILITY. CHANCE'S FATHER, MOTHER AND CHANCE ALL DEAL WITH THAT TOPIC. I'LL LET YOU FIGURE OUT THE SENTENCE. AS FAR AS A QUOTATION GOES, THAT'S ENTIRELY UP TO YOU. LOOK AT THE LAST FEW CHAPTERS--IS THERE A SENTENCE IN THERE THAT JUMPS OUT AT YOU? IF ONE DOES, THEN THINK WHY AND WRITE IT DOWN. ONE OBVIOUS PLACE WOULD BE WHEN CHANCE SEES HIS FATHER JUST BEFORE HE GOES BELOW DECK ON THE SAILBOAT. ******************************************************** I just got done reading your book and I need to know the theme and a quote that can relate to it. Can you help me out? BUT, YOU DON'T TELL ME WHICH BOOK. I HOPE YOU ARE THE PERSON WHO WROTE ABOVE. ********************************************************* what fears does mitch have to overcome in payback? MY SENSE IS THAT MITCH DOESN'T HAVE SELF-CONFIDENCE. HE THINKS OF HIMSELF AS A FAT LOSER, SO HE HAS TO LEARN TO BELIEVE IN HIS OWN WORTH. **************************************************************** what are some of the awards have you won. MY BOOKS HAVE WON STATE 'BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARDS' IN TENNESSEE, PENNSYLVANIA, IOWA, SOUTH CAROLINA, AND NEBRASKA (THREE TIMES). MY BOOKS HAVE BEEN NOMINATED IN MANY OTHER STATES. ********************************************************************** Will there ever be a sequel or movie for Gym Candy? I would love to see Gym Candy as a movie it's my all time favorite book THAT REALLY ISN'T UP TO ME. IT WOULD TAKE A FILMMAKER TO READ THE BOOK AND DECIDE THAT IT WOULD MAKE A GOOD MOVIE, AND THEN DECIDING TO GO AHEAD AND MAKE IT. NOT TOO LIKELY, BUT THANK YOU FOR THE KIND WORDS. ************************************************************* what is reese's last name in High Heat? THIS WILL PROBABLY SURPRISE YOU, BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER. AFTER I FINISH WRITING A BOOK, I RARELY REREAD THE BOOK. I'D SEE ALL SORTS OF THINGS I WISHED I COULD CHANGE--AND I CAN'T CHANGE ANYTHING. SO WHEN I'M DONE, I MOVE ON. ************************************************************************ Excuse me but i am really trying to figure out the antagonist for Heart of a champion is it jimmy???? OKAY, I GUESS SO. YOU'RE RIGHT TO BE A BIT CONFUSED. HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING. YOU'VE GOT A SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT THAT IS MAKING YOU PLUG NAMES INTO CERTAIN SPOTS. PROTAGONIST IS ?????? ANTAGONIST IS ???????? IT'S NOT A BAD WAY TO EXAMINE A BOOK, BUT NOT ALL BOOKS FIT INTO THAT SCHEME. HEART OF A CHAMPION DOESN'T REALLY FIT. BUT, IF YOU HAD TO NAME AN ANTAGONIST, THEN I GUESS JIMMY WILL DO. HIS CONTINUED USE OF ALCOHOL THREATENS SETH WHO IS DEFINITELY THE PROTAGONIST. **************************************************** what is the mood? I'M GOING TO GUESS YOU'RE ASKING ABOUT HEART OF A CHAMPION. MOOD IS MELANCHOLY. ************************** Mr. Deuker how did you gather your information for Gym Candy? I need to know the climax for a test and I am really struggling. I would really appreciate a fast response -Pierce is Fierce WELL, I'D SAY THE CAR INCIDENT NEAR THE END IS THE CLIMAX. I DON'T WANT TO GIVE AWAY THE STORY. ************************************************* if you could work with any author, who would it be? JOHN FEINSTEIN. Dear Mr Deuker, baseball is my life and when I read it I cried at the end. So I got all of my friends to read it and they all cried and agreed it was the best book they've ever read. My teachers and coaches all read it and loved it. This book changed my life!!!! thank you!!!Even a lot of girls I know have read it and absolutely loved it! I was wondering if your going to write another baseball book? And I think it would make a good book about any sport and the conflicts an athlete has to go thru to get to college and what a senior has to go through with leaving his friends and girlfriend and etc. Thanks soooo much- # I'M GLAD YOU LIKE HEART. I WROTE IT MANY YEARS AGO, BUT IT'S STILL IN PRINT AND IT STILL SEEMS TO SPEAK TO PEOPLE. I DO HAVE A COUPLE MORE BASEBALL BOOKS--HIGH HEAT AND PAINTING THE BLACK ********************************************************************** You should make a book that its about soccer and i have a name for it "Keeper" GOOD TITLE. BOTHELL, WA (A SUBURB OF SEATTLE) AROUND THE YEAR 2000. ********************************************************************* Hello Mr.Deuker , your book Night Hoops is fantastic. But i couldnt come across a good plot summary, can you help me? SURE. LOOK AT EAST SECTION OF THE BOOK, AND THEN IN TWO OR THREE SENTENCES, WRITE DOWN WHAT THE MAIN EVENTS IN THAT SECTION ARE. THAT SHOULD GET YOU A GOOD SUMMARY WITHOUT IT BECOMING TOO LONG. ********************************************************************* in the book night hoops.... can u list the characters, setting and plot summary? I DON'T KNOW WHICH BOOK YOU MEAN. HOWEVER, LOOK AT THE LAST 30 PAGES OR SO. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT? THAT WOULD BE THE CLIMAX.************************************************************** Hello Mr. Dueker, I had one question to ask you. What was your inspiration to begin writing the book Runner? I SUPPOSE RUNNER WAS MOST INSPIRED BY THE EVENTS OF 9/11. I WAS WORKING ON GYM CANDY, BUT SPORTS SEEMED SILLY. I WANTED TO WRITE SOMETHING POLITICAL AND STILL WRITE A YOUNG ADULT NOVEL, SO LITTLE BY LITTLE RUNNER CAME INTO FOCUS. ************************************************************************* How many books have you writen that have not gotten published? also, do you have anyone proof your books before thay are published? I'VE ACTUALLY FINISHED ONLY ONE BOOK THAT HASN'T BEEN PUBLISHED. I HAVE FALSE STARTS, THOUGH.***************************************************************** Dear Mr. Dueker, I am a student that goes to University High School. I had to read a book in reading class and gym candy was suggested to me by my reading teacher. I liked this book because it was about football it explained drills and gave great details throughout the game. It shows that you have to be strong to achieve your goals but also be smart to. That you can’t make excuses to get by and try to blame things on other things or people. Also this book showed that you can lose your friends in a matter of days and get them back with just a simple phone call or ride home. You can lose a girl by just not going to hang out with them. Then it shows responsibility and that nothing is just going to get handed to you that you have got to work for what you get. He works for money and works to pay off the jeep his dad gave him and he pays for his own stuff. Guns are dangerous so you have to be careful with them and his dad trusted him with the gun and use it for self protection only trying to commit suicide but to be careful. I thought the end of the book was surprising because I never thought he would have missed when he shot himself. This was a really good book and I liked it a lot. It was very good and believable. Most kids that want to get better take steroids especially the dumb ones. I was wondering if you were writing a book that I would enjoy reading or having a book that you would suggest for me to read. I will look forward to reading more books of yours In the future. Sincerely, Jason GLAD YOU LIKED IT, JASON. MY OTHER "FOOTBALL" BOOK IS PAYBACK TIME, SO YOU MIGHT GIVE THAT A TRY IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THAT AS A BACKDROP TO THE STORY. I'M GLAD YOU GAVE GYM CANDY SUCH CAREFUL ATTENTION. THANK YOU, CARL********************************************* Dear, Carl Deuker Hello my name is Daniel Acevedo; I go to University High School. I came to read this book when I was just looking through books, I read the summary and I thought it looked really good so I started to read it. Your book “Heart of a Champion” was a brilliant baseball book. There was really good information about teenagers. Since Jimmy and Seth first met they have been the best double play duo, Jimmy was an amazing shortstop and Seth was an average second baseman but they were perfect for each other. The first day they met in the baseball field they instantly became best friends. They practiced everyday with each other and Jimmy’s dad so they can be the best as can be. Even when they get mad at each other they overcome it really quickly and stay best friends! Jimmy was always better then Seth so Seth always had to work even harder so he can be on the same team as Jimmy. Then finally when they get to high school Jimmy makes the Varsity team and Seth makes the J.V team so Seth was furious which made him keep practicing by himself extra harder while Jimmy hanged out with his friends. I especially loved the twist that you made, which was that the best friends started from being the nicest and hardest working kids to starting to party and drinking a lot. I really enjoyed this book. I also read one of your books called “Painting the Black” and that book recommended by my amazing reading teacher was even better! And I am looking forward to your future work. Sincerely, Daniel Acevedo THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS, DANIEL. I'M GLAD YOU LIKED BOTH BOOKS. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I'M PLEASED WITH IS THAT NONE OF MY BOOKS ARE CLEARLY INFERIOR TO THE OTHERS. FOR BETTER OR WORSE, THE QUALITY IS ABOUT THE SAME. KEEP READING!++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mr Deuker, I am doing a project on you for my eighth grade language arts class. I would love to do a paragraph about what inspired you to become an author. So, what did inspire you? I'D SAY THE SONGS OF THE ROLLING STONES AND BOB DYLAN MADE ME REALIZE THAT WORDS COULD BE VERY POWERFUL. AFTER THAT, I READ BOOKS WITH A CLOSER INTEREST. I PARTICULARLY LIKED THE WAY JAMES JOYCE USED WORDS IN HIS BOOK PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN. FINALLY, I'VE ALWAYS LIKED TO TELL STORIES, AND I EXAGGERATE MY STORIES TO MAKE THEM ENTERTAINING. ************************************************************************ Good afternoon, Mr Deuker! I have a question for you today. I am your BIGGEST fan (without a doubt). I understand you teach sixth grade at Shelton View Elementary. Well one of my teachers said that we will do a project type thing invoving making boxes for a single pringle and mailing them to each other. We just need a teacher from out of our state (NJ). I said that my favorite author is a teacher and she said that if you agreed, we would make it happen. So can you please do this with your class and mine??? YES, THIS LOOKS LIKE A FUN PROJECT. I'VE BEEN IN TOUCH WITH YOUR TEACHER. IT'S ON. ************************************************************************** Hello my names is Bryan I am in 10th grade and i am writing a report on you and i was wondering if any of your books are ever going to become movies? THAT'S NOT UP TO WRITERS. RATHER, A FILM WRITER OR DIRECTOR WOULD HAVE TO READ MY BOOK AND DECIDE IT WOULD MAKE A GOOD MOVIE. I'VE HAD A COUPLE OF FEELERS, BUT NOTHING HAS COME OF IT. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& IM writing a paper on you and i was wondering what inspired you to write sports books? I LIKE TO PLAY SPORTS, I'VE DONE SOME COACHING, AND AS A TEENAGER I LIKED TO READ BOOKS ABOUT SPORTS. SINCE I WANTED TO WRITE, IT WAS A NATURAL CHOICE. ONCE I GOT A BOOK PUBLISHED, I STAYED WITH IT. ************************************************************Is it easier for you to write fiction or non-fiction ALL IN ALL, NON-FICTION. I CAN THINK IT THROUGH, FIGURE OUT THE POINT I'M TRYING TO MAKE, AND GET THERE. IT MIGHT NOT BE GREAT NON-FICTION, BUT IT'S PRESENTABLE. FICTION IS ABOUT PEOPLE, AND PEOPLE ARE UNPREDICTABLE, SO YOU HAVE TO THINK: "HOW WOULD THEY ACT?" NOT "HOW SHOULD THEY ACT?" THAT MAKES FICTION TOUGHER. ************************************************************ I just finished Night hoop and high heat. I really enjoyed them. What inspired you to write these books. Timothy NIGHT HOOPS WAS BASED ON SOME EVENTS OF A STUDENT I TAUGHT--THE SHOOTING ON THE TRAIL IS BASED ON A TRUE EVENT. HIGH HEAT IS BASED MORE ON MY OWN CHILDHOOD. THE FATHER OF A BOY DOWN THE BLOCK KILLED HIMSELF. I NEVER KNEW THE WHOLE STORY, BUT I KNOW IT WAS VERY TOUGH ON THE BOY. ################################################ Hello. I am a 8th grader currently reading Payback Time.. and i happened to google you up because i wanted to buy your books that i havent read, and i was wondering if "Swagger" is coming out soon? SWAGGER SHOULD BE OUT IN MAY OR JUNE. ******************************************************************************* Why and To who do you write your books? I WRITE THE KIND OF BOOKS THAT I WOULD HAVE WANTED TO READ WHEN I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL. THEY DEAL WITH BOYS AND SPORTS, SO BOYS ARE A NATURAL AUDIENCE, BUT I'VE HAD MANY GIRLS WRITE AND TELL ME THAT THEY ENJOY THE BOOKS. ******************************************************************************* How do you get your inspiration to write books like gym candy and runner? GYM CANDY CAME PRETTY MUCH OUT OF THE NEWSPAPER. I READ ABOUT INCREASING USE OF STEROIDS AMONG HS ATHLETES AND THEN DID RESEARCH. RUNNER WAS A COMBINATION OF NEWSPAPER ARTICLES AND MY OWN LIFE. THERE WAS A MURDER OF A SMALL CHILD IN THE PHILLY NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE I SPENT A FEW SUMMERS. THAT REALLY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION. ****************************************************************************** For Night Hoops What happens to Trent at the end of the book? Does he go with his brother or does he stay? Or is it something we guess? GOOD QUESTION. BY COMING BACK TO FINISH THE GAME, HE CHOOSES HIS TEAMMATES OVER HIS BROTHER. HIS LIFE ISN'T EXACTLY STRAIGHTENED OUT, BUT HE'S ON THE RIGHT PATH. **************************************************************************** what is the theme of On the Devil's Court. OH, I'D SAY SOMETHING LIKE -- YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN LIFE AND HOW YOU LIVE IT. DON'T THINK THAT OTHER PEOPLE (ROSS) OR THE SUPERNATURAL CAN SHOW YOU THE WAY. YOU'VE GOT TO FIND YOUR OWN WAY.************************************************************************* hey Carl im in the 8th grade and i have a project and i was wondering if i can get a biography from you for my project from what inspired you to write the book gym candy and how your life was and if it had anything to do with why you wrote the book ACTUALLY, THERE IS A BIOGRAPHY LINK AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE AND THERE IS ALSO A LINK ON THE PAGE TO AN INTERVIEW. IF YOU READ THOSE AND STILL HAVE A QUESTION, EMAIL ME AT cdeuker@gmail.com ******************************************************************************* What is the climax of gym candy I'D SAY THE SCENE ON THE BEACH AT THE VERY END. DON'T WANT TO GET TOO SPECIFIC OR I'LL RUIN THE ENDING FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T READ IT. **************************************************************************** this book was really go and i enjoyed it. Please keep writing!!!!!! THANKS, I INTEND TO KEEP WRITING. WISH ME LUCK IN GETTING GOOD IDEAS ***************************************************************************** I am a high school teacher who needs to suggest a summer reading book for boys 15-17. Is Playback Time too young for that age boy? Is it too easy a read? Thank you, Mrs. H @@@@@@@@@@@@@ HELLO MRS. H. I'D SAY NO AND NO. The book level often comes out low on those scales because much of the book is in conversation. That translates into short sentences and that makes those "scales" label the book as easy. I think you'll find that boys will like the book, and I suspect you'll find that there is good fodder for discussion/debate. (You have my permission to skip/scan the football sections.) ************************************************************************** hi my name is kort i was reading ur book payback time and i have a book report due tomorrow and i dont get what the falling actions 1-3 are or the solution can you please help me HELLO KORT. I DON'T CHECK THIS PAGE EVERY DAY--MORE LIKE ONCE A WEEK. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS TOO LATE, BUT: FALLING ACTIONS IN PAYBACK TIME WOULD BE THE RECOVERY FROM THE BEATING, THE NON-DATE WITH KIMI, THE ANTICIPATION OF COLLEGE, ETC. ANYTHING AFTER THE CLIMAX. THE SOLUTION, I'M ASSUMING, IS THE SAVING OF ANGEL. **************************************************************************** Carl, why do you write these kind of books to the readers? WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER, I LIKED TO READ AND I LIKED SPORTS, BUT THERE WERE NOT MANY BOOKS WITH SPORTS THEMES. SO, AS AN ADULT, I WRITE THE KIND OF BOOK I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO READ. ***************************************************************************** Mr Deuker is my teacher this year! (As if you'd believe me) WELL, I BELIEVE YOU. *************************************************************************** I have to do a book project about this book lol anyways.. whats the setting? YOU HAVEN'T TOLD ME WHICH BOOK. THAT SAID, EVERYTHING I'VE WRITTEN (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF HEART OF A CHAMPION) IS SET IN SEATTLE IN MODERN TIMES. ************************************************************************* will you try to get your books turned into movies???? i think the movie would be a huge success THAT'S NOT UP TO THE AUTHOR. WHAT HAPPENS IS A FILMMAKER READS A BOOK AND DECIDES HE/SHE WANTS TO MAKE A MOVIE. THEN THE CONTACT THE AUTHOR. SO FAR, ALTHOUGH I HAVE HAD A FEW CALLS, NOTHING HAS COME OF THEM. I'M ALL FOR A MOVIE, THOUGH! ****************************************************************************** why did you pick Night Hoops to be the name it is now? I LOOK FOR THESE QUALITIES IN A TITLE: INTERESTING, SHORT, EASY TO REMEMBER, CONNECTED TO THE STORY. NIGHT HOOPS HAS ALL THOSE QUALITIES. THE FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN THE BOYS DEVELOPS AT NIGHT WHILE THEY ARE SHOOTING HOOPS--A NATURAL TITLE. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& summary of the story I DON'T KNOW WHAT STORY YOU MEAN, BUT THAT'S NOT A QUESTION I CAN ANSWER FOR YOU ANYWAY. YOU HAVE TO DECIDE FOR YOURSELF WHAT EVENTS MATTERED TO YOU. EVERY READER WRITES A DIFFERENT SUMMARY OF EVERY STORY BECAUSE WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT PEOPLE. ***************************************************************************** I am currently a 8th grader I'm not typically the type to read lot but I couldn't stop reading this book I was wondering if you are going to make a sequel? I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK YOU ARE REFERRING TO, BUT SO FAR I HAVEN'T WRITTEN ANY SEQUELS. SIMPLE REASON IS THAT TOO OFTEN SEQUELS AREN'T AS GOOD AS THE FIRST BOOK. I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THE FIRST ONE WITH A POOR SECOND ONE. ************************************************************************* Hi Mr. Dueker, I really enjoyed reading heart of a champion and runner. I am a 7th grade student and i just recently finished runner and I am working on book report and need to know what inspired you to wright runner? Also I wanted to let you know those two books were very, very profound and that I play travel baseball myself and i am not a huge reader but your books are just so phenomenal. Thanks so much. RUNNER WAS INSPIRED BY THE EVENT OF 9/11. I WAS WORKING ON SWAGGER, THE STEROID BOOK, AND IT SEEMED UNIMPORTANT. I WANTED TO WRITE A POLITICAL BOOK, BUT I ALSO WANTED TO WRITE A YOUNG ADULT BOOK. AS I WAS JOGGING ONE DAY, I SAW A BOY PULL A PACKAGE FROM SOME ROCKS ABOVE THE BEACH, AND THAT GOT ME GOING. GLAD YOU LIKED MY BOOKS. ************************************************************************** Hello i am an eighth grade student I have currently read Gym Candy. I don't really like to read but I couldn't put this book down. I also read heart of a champion I loved it. Are you currently writing a new book? YES, SWAGGER SHOULD COME OUT IN THE SPRING. *************************************************************************** Hi Im Nasiir And Im trying To Do a School Test Can You Help me With A Few Answers, Is The Central Conflict Internal Or External? 2Examples Of Foreshadowing? Mood Of Story? 2 Examples of irony? Tone Of Story? Central Theme? All Of These Question Are Directed To The Wonderful Book Runner NASIIR, I'LL POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, BUT I CAN'T DO YOUR TEST FOR YOU. 1. CONFLICT IS A BIT OF BOTH, BUT ANSWER THIS QUESTION: DOES CHANCE HAVE MORE INNER DOUBTS ABOUT WHAT HE IS DOING OR MORE FIGHTS? WHAT TAKES UP MORE PAGES? 2. HIS MAIN GOAL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR IS TO STAY OUT OF THINGS. WHAT'S IRONIC ABOUT THAT GOAL BY THE END? 3. MOOD: HERE ARE SOME WORDS--HAPPY, OPTIMISTIC, TENSE, PESSIMISTIC, SAD. CHOOSE ONE AND THEN THINK DESCRIBE WHY YOU THINK IT FITS. 4. THEME: CHANCE WANTS TO REMOVE HIMSELF FROM LIFE AROUND HIM. DOES THAT WORK? 5) I'LL GIVE YOU THIS ONE BECAUSE IT'S DIFFERENT. I'D CALL THE TONE "CONVERSATIONAL." I TRIED TO MAKE IT SEEM AS IF CHANCE IS TALKING DIRECTLY TO YOU, AS IF THERE ISN'T AN AUTHOR, JUST A GUY TELLING HIS STORY. GOOD LUCK! I Need Help I'm Not Even Going To Begin Asking Until I Know Someone Is Really Listening Though. WELL, I CHECK THIS ABOUT EVERY FOUR OR FIVE DAYS UNLESS I HAVE A DEADLINE FOR A BOOK. Mr.Dueker, I've been a huge fan of your books for a long time i have read them all and i'm wondering... are you going to write another one soon?? - Derek R. HELLO DEREK, I HAVE A NEW BOOK -- SWAGGER -- COMING OUT THIS SPRING. THANKS FOR READING THE OTHER BOOKS. Is there any irony in the book runner? THE BASIC IRONY IS THAT CHANCE WANTS TO AVOID INVOLVEMENT WITH OTHERS, AND HE ENDS UP DEEPLY INVOLVED IN MATTERS THAT ARE OF CONCERN TO THE COUNTRY AND WORLD. Have you been awarded anything? YES, I'VE WON SEVEN BEST YOUNG ADULT STATE AWARDS. THREE TIMES IN NEBRASKA (MY FAVORITE STATE!), AND ONCE IN IOWA, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TENNESSEE. What kind of awards and honors have you recieved? In the book runner, could you please explain the setting a little more SETTING USUALLY MEANS TIME AND PLACE: SO, THE TIME IS EARLY 21ST CENTURY, AND THE PLACE IS IN AND AROUND SEATTLE, WA. HI CARL :D I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! YOUR SO AMAZING!! I WISH I COULD HUG YOU SOO BAD ;) YOUR SUCH A GOOD AUTHOR ;) Mmm, I LOVE YOUR BOOKS WITH A PASSION. AND YOU OF COURSE!! ;) bye bye CARL :) lOVE bethany & Megan ;) What is the falling action? I'M NOT SURE WHAT BOOK YOU MEAN. PAYBACK TIME? IN THAT CASE IT'S MITCH'S RECOVERY AFTER BEING BEATEN UP. IF IT'S NOT PAYBACK TIME, ASK AGAIN AND INCLUDE THE BOOK. What inspired you to write Heart of a Champion? I HAD A STUDENT WHOSE LIFE MIRRORED JIMMY WINTER'S. THE SETH BARHAM CHARACTER IS BASED ON MY OWN CHILDHOOD. how did you develope the characters in gym candy? I STARTED WITH A NEWSPAPER STORY ABOUT AN 18 YEAR OLD BASEBALL PITCHER (AND STEROID USER) WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE. I SWITCHED THE SPORT, AND THEN TRIED TO IMAGINE HOW HE GOT THERE. Remember me ? I still love you YES, I DO REMEMBER YOU. NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN, AND THANK YOU FOR NOT SPAMMING THE SITE. I HOPE THINGS HAVE BEEN GOING WELL FOR YOU. Are there any video interviews with you online? I will be showing your website and books to our 8th grade students next week and would like to include an interview. THANKS FOR SHOWING THE WEBSITE. THERE AREN'T ANY ON-LINE INTERVIEWS. I HADN'T THOUGHT OF THAT, BUT I'LL TRY TO GET THAT DONE SOON. I HOPE YOUR STUDENTS ARE ENJOYING MY BOOK. Mr. Deuker, could you please write a sequel to Gym Candy?! I read the whole book in 3 hours because it was fantastic. I'm dying to know what happens to Mick in the future! Thanks ! I MAY WRITE A SEQUEL SOMEDAY. I NEED TO HAVE A GOOD IDEA FOR THE STORY, THOUGH. I WOULDN'T WANT TO RUIN IT WITH A CRUMMY SEQUEL. who is the protangist person in the story I DON'T KNOW WHAT STORY YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT. Dear Mr. Deuker, I am doing a school project and need to know a couple of things. Did you have good grades when you where a kid and how many family members do you have. I HAVE A WIFE, A DAUGHTER, A SISTER, A NIECE, A NEPHEW, AND A BUNCH OF COUSINS IN PHILADELPHIA WHOM I DON'T SEE ANYMORE BUT DID VISIT WHEN I WAS A CHILD. YES, I HAD GOOD GRADES. I WANTED TO GO TO COLLEGE FROM A VERY EARLY AGE, AND I ALWAYS ENJOYED ALL ASPECTS OF SCHOOL. Hello Mr.Deuker gym candy was the best book i ever read thank can not wait to read more of your great work THANK YOU. I JUST FINISHED SWAGGER, WHICH WILL BE COMING OUT IN SPRING. What are some examples of foreshadowing in Runner? I love your books! NEWS THAT MILLER WAS KILLED IN IRAQ FORESHADOWS THE FACT THAT THE PACKAGES AREN'T JUST DRUGS. GLAD YOU LIKE THE BOOKS. what is a powerful qoute about the book runner THAT'S A QUESTION YOU NEED TO ANSWER FOR YOURSELF. I KNOW IT'S HARD BECAUSE I TRY TO MAKE THE BOOKS SEEM CONVERSATIONAL. THERE ISN'T MUCH IN THE WAY OF "LITERARY" LANGUAGE. HOWEVER, IF THERE'S A PASSAGE THAT STRIKES YOU, SIMPLY COPY IT DOWN AND EXPLAIN WHY IT MATTERED TO YOU. Do any chracters grow or change over the course of Night Hoops I THINK SO. NICK COMES TO UNDERSTAND HIS FRIEND, AND HIS FRIEND DECIDES THAT IT'S BETTER TO BE PART OF A TEAM THAN TO BE OFF WITH HIS LOSER BROTHER. (SORRY, I CAN'T REMEMBER THE CHARACTERS' NAMES!) I just read "Painting the Black" I loved it! I am wondering who was with Josh when they attacked Monica Roby? I really want to know! THAT'S A QUESTION THAT GETS ASKED A LOT. ONE OF THE TEAMMATES, BUT IT'S NEVER STATED IN THE BOOK AND ONLY JOSH KNOWS. I DON'T EVEN KNOW. How many pages are there in runner YOU CAN GET THAT FROM AMAZON.COM. I DON'T HAVE A COPY WITH ME RIGHT NOW. I just finished reading Runner. It kept my heart racing and it was AMAZING. What message would you send the readers? THAT WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR ACTIONS. YOU CAN'T JUST "NOT LOOK IN THE PACKAGE" AND CLAIM TO BE INNOCENT. CHANCE IS INVOLVED, AS HE DISCOVERS. Hey Carl, I LOVE every single one your books. I emailed you in the spring asking when your new book Swagger would be released, and if I recall you Said fall? Anyway, any updates on progress/release date? Thanks, can't wait! SPRING! would you be apposed to making painting the black into a moive>
I'D LOVE TO SEE IT MADE INTO A MOVIE.
mr.Deuker you baseball stories are my favorite. Have you ever thought about writing one about a kid who wants to be a pro umpire?
THAT'S A COOL IDEA. HE COULD START OUT AS A PLAYER, THEN DECIDE THAT HIS ONLY CHANCE OF MAKING THE BIG TIME IS AS AN UMPIRE. I HAD NOT THOUGHT OF IT, BUT NOW I WILL LET IT PERCOLATE.

Well, How long did it take for you to write Gym Candy? ABOUT 2.5 YEARS FROM BEGINNING TO PUBLICATION

what kind of car did jimmy winter have
CHEVROLET

Which book will swagger be most alike?-thanks Mr. Deuker! Keep up the good work, you're Awesome!:)
PROBABLY PAINTING THE BLACK
How would you write a Letter to chance in Runner?
I'D TELL HIM TO GET SOME HELP; THE WHOLE PACKAGES DEAL IS TOO BIG FOR A KID. CRIME IS CRIME.
I need a Fratags pyramid of Payback time for a project I'm doing about your books do you know where I can find one or can you help me?
I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS.

HELLO MARK--I'M GLAD YOU'VE ENJOYED THEM. I THINK MY NEXT BOOK WILL BE OUT IN APRIL OR MAY. I HAVEN'T BEEN UPDATING THIS WEBSITE MUCH BECAUSE I'VE BEEN WORKING SO HARD.
Can you please write a book about girls softball? I played last season on a team called pink sox at the mcallen boys and girls camp it's really exciting!
MCALLEN--A GREAT PLACE. DID I MEET YOU WHEN I VISITED? ANYWAY, A GIRLS' SOFTBALL BOOK IS ONE OF MY GOALS. I COACHED SOFTBALL FORM FIVE OR SIX YEARS. NOTHING SOFT ABOUT THAT BALL, IS THERE?

what do you do when you are not writing book I LIVE A PRETTY BORING LIFE. I TEACH 6TH GRADE, PLAY GOLF, GARDEN, READ, RIDE A BIKE, RUN A LITTLE, ETC.

What is the setting in night hoops? BOTHELL WA IN MODERN TIME
And where does the action of the story take place? BOTHELL BASKETBALL COURTS AND HOMES
And what is the main conflict in the story? THAT'S REALLY FOR A READER TO DECIDE, NOT ME

what are 5 rising action WHICH BOOK? AND, HONESTLY, YOU NEED TO DECIDE THESE FOR YOURSELF. WHEN DID THE STORY SEEM TO TAKE A DIFFERENT DIRECTION? WHEN DID YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW ABOUT THE CHARACTERS? EITHER OF THOSE MOMENTS WOULD BE RISING ACTION. THERE REALLY ISN'T A RIGHT OR WRONG . . . IT'S A QUESTION MEANT TO MAKE SURE YOU READ THE BOOK.

So, I'm confused. is there main CHARACTERS in the book night hoops (nick AND trent?) or is there A main character (just nick)? I'D SAY NICK AND TRENT, BUT IF YOU HAVE TO PICK ONE, THEN NICK

I just read night hoops and i have no idea what the chracters physical appearances are of the characters, can you help me out? THAT'S MY WEAKEST AREA AS A WRITER. I DON'T DO A GOOD JOB DESCRIBING CHARACTERS. JUST SAY "THE AUTHOR DOESN'T DESCRIBE HIS CHARACTERS IN ANY DETAIL."

Hi Mr. Deuker,
I'm Anika, one of your fans. I really enjoyed your book runner and I was wondering whether or not there would be a sequel to that book??? And also, where do you get a lot of your inspiration for your books? Why did you choose to have a lot of them be based on sports? HELLO ANIKA. I'M PRETTY GOOD AT WRITING SPORTS ACTION, I LIKE SPORTS, AND BOOKS TAKE A LONG TIME. SO, SINCE I WANT THEM TO PUBLISHED, I STICK WITH SPORTS. I DOUBT I'LL DO A SEQUEL TO RUNNER. I'D HAVE TO FOLLOW CHANCE TO IRAQ, AND I DON'T ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A SOLDIER THERE.

What does Chance Taylor look like in the story "Runner" THAT'S MY WEAKEST AREA AS A WRITER. I DON'T DO A GOOD JOB DESCRIBING CHARACTERS. JUST SAY "THE AUTHOR DOESN'T DESCRIBE HIS CHARACTERS IN ANY DETAIL."

You should make a squeal to Payback Time!
THANK YOU. I'M GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE BOOK

mr.deuker
i noticed in your book runner that there is no similies ir metaphore.. why
GOOD OBSERVATION. I TRY TO WRITE IN A VERY PLAIN STYLE THAT MAKES THE READER FEEL AS IF THE NARRATOR IS SIMPLY TELLING THE STORY. I AVOID METAPHORS AND SIMILES BECAUSE I DON'T WON'T READERS TO THINK OF ME (THE WRITER) AT ALL. IF I WRITE SOMETHING "LITERARY" the basketball loomed in the sky like an orange moon descending into a stormy ocean FOR EXAMPLE, THE READER WOULD THINK OF ME AND NOT MY STORY. SO I AVOID ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE SIMPLEST, MOST EVERYDAY SIMILES AND METAPHORS.

Hey, I'm a girl over in Puyallup (Washington), and is the building Chance goes to to get questioned at the end of Runner the Municipal Tower in Seattle? I just read the description (Downtown Seattle, 38+ floors, a Starbucks in the lobby), and it sounds very much like it. Also, if you ever can get around to writing a book about track or xc, can you please try to convey the true difficulty of these sports? Everybody assumes they are easy sports, but neither track or xc are as easy as they seem, I would know since I do both and they both require extremely rigorous training. YES, THE BUILDING IS THE TOWER. I WOULD DEFINITELY INCLUDE THE DIFFICULTY OF BOTH OF THOSE EVENT. ONE TIME IN MY LIFE I MANAGED TO BEAT 6 MINUTES FOR A MILE, AND I WAS ABSOLUTELY BEAT. I AGREE 100 PERCENT THAT THE DEDICATION AND DIFFICULTY OF CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK AREN'T APPRECIATED. THE OTHER SPORT THAT IS ALSO UNAPPRECIATED, I THINK, IS WRESTLING.

What's the message in "Runner"? If it's "If you don't look, you don't see", can you please explain it a little further? Because I don't exactly comprehend. CHANCE WANTS TO BELIEVE THAT BECAUSE HE DOESN'T LOOK INSIDE THE PACKAGES, HE'S NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING "BAD" THAT MIGHT HAPPEN. HE LEARNS THAT WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OUR ACTIONS--THAT WILLFUL IGNORANCE DOESN'T WORK.

what actors would have play mick, drew, coach carlson, micks mom, and micks dad
HONESTLY, I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT ACTORS TODAY. I WRITE AND I TEACH, AND ONE THING THAT I GIVE UP IS TV AND MOST MOVIES.

and the setting, inciting force, climax, conflict, and resolution WHICH BOOK?

what is the quote that describes the protaganist and what page? AGAIN, I DON'T KNOW WHICH BOOK.

What were you thinking while writing this book? I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT.

My name us Krystal Ramos from Lincoln Middle School in Mcallen Texas and me and ny friend Yulissa Hinojosa talked to you about ou writing a softball book based on experience from your daughter and i was just wondering if you were goning to write the book if you can me and Yulissa the characters and our softball numbers are me 8 and Yulissa 3 and i you can call the book Sluggers and our team name Texas Sluggers. I would really appriciate it i you did the book because i love your books but mostly the baseball and hopefully you can make a softball one.
Thank you for your time - Krystal Ramos HELLO KRYSTAL, NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU. IT'S RAINING AND 55 DEGREES IN SEATTLE RIGHT NOW--I BET IT'S A LITTLE WARMER IN MCALLEN. I WILL FILE YOUR NOTE IN MY "TO DO" LIST OF BOOKS. I DEFINITELY WANT TO WRITE THAT SOFTBALL BOOK SOMEDAY, AND WHEN I DO I WILL CERTAINLY USE YOUR NAMES. CARL

disappointed with your comment box... smh. had a wholee essay on you and stories of great positive feedback. but i accidently typed wrong letters in verification box and it erased it all. smh..... SORRY. THE SITE IS RUN BY THE AUTHOR'S GUILD, NOT BY ME, SO THEY RUN THE VERIFICATION BOX STUFF. I'VE BLOWN A FEW, BUT HAVE NEVER HAD IT ALL ERASED. I'LL SEND THEM YOUR COMMENT AND SEE IF THEY CAN FIX IT.

what are 2 similes personifications metaphors hyperbolys idoms in your book GYM CANDY??????????? I'M SORRY. I'D HAVE TO PAGE THROUGH THE BOOK LOOKING FOR THEM, TOO. I DON'T KNOW THINGS LIKE THAT OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. AS A WRITER, I NEVER THINK TO MYSELF: "I'LL WRITE A SIMILE NOW." IF IT DOESN'T COME NATURALLY TO ME, THEN I DON'T USE IT.
HERE'S WHAT I'D SUGGEST. GO THROUGH LOOKING FOR 'LIKE' AND 'AS' TO FIND THE SIMILES. THE IDIOMS SHOULD SHOW UP IN THE FOOTBALL GAMES. PERSONIFICATIONS??? I DON'T KNOW. MAYBE I PERSONIFY THE STEROIDS A LITTLE BIT, MAKING THEM SEEM LIKE A CHARACTER. THAT'S A STRETCH, THOUGH. HYPERBOLES: MICK THINKING ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO WIN. GOOD LUCK

i just finished Painting the Black. quite good...although it may not have been as intense as your other novels. WHO WAS THE GUY ALONG WITH JOSH WHO RAPED MONICA ROBY.

i just finished Painting the Black. quite good...although it may not have been as intense as your other novels. WHO WAS THE GUY ALONG WITH JOSH WHO RAPED MONICA ROBY.

hey! i just finished painting the black! quite a nice story! :D it may not have been AS intense as some of your other novels but overall it was a good piece.
but WHO WAS THE OTHER BOY ALONG WITH JOSH WHO "RAPED" MONICA ROBY.

What inspires you to write? I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED TO TELL STORIES--STILL DO. I OFTEN EMBELLISH MY STORIES WITH A BIT OF FICTION, SO WRITING HAS ALWAYS BEEN A NATURAL OUTLET FOR ME

who is melissa watts father HE'S A LAWYER. I CAN'T REMEMBER HIS NAME

Hi ive read all of your books and i have a few questions....in runner do melissa and chance end up together? what happens next? and in high heat does reese ever get back his bat? .... thank you and btw loooooooooooved runner THE MELISSA ANSWERS ARE BELOW. NO, REESE DOESN'T GET HIS BAT BACK. THAT HAPPENS SOMETIMES AFTER A CONCUSSION. JUST THE SMALLEST FEAR OF THE BALL CAN TURN A GREAT HITTER INTO A STRIKEOUT MACHINE.

hi ive read all of your books and i have a question...in the book runner do melissa and chance end up together? what happens next and please make a sequel MAYBE SOMEDAY!

Do melissa and chance end up together?????? NO. HE JOINS THE SERVICE AND SHE GOES TO COLLEGE

CARL!!!!!!! I LOVE YOUUUU :) THANKS FOR WRITING, ANGELINA, BUT REMEMBER YOUR HEART BELONGS TO BRAD.

which was the first book written ON THE DEVIL'S COURT IS MY FIRST BOOK

Will you ever make Gym Candy 2. It's my favorite book of all time I MAY SOMEDAY. THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT

WAS THIS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK OR DID IT SELL THE MOST. I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT.

hey i was wondering why or how you made this book if it was from your childhood of some else write back. WHICH BOOK ARE YOU ASKING ABOUT? THE BACKGROUND IS DIFFERENT FOR EACH OF THEM.

In the book Gym Candy, is Mick telling his story from the rehab center? YES, THOUGH ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HAPPENS WITH A BOOK IS CALLED "WILLING SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF." IT'S A FANCY WAY OF SAYING THAT READERS MORE OR LESS PLAY ALONG WITH WRITERS.

Joe description FAUST? ON DEVIL'S COURT? 6/2 BLONDE, SLENDER
Joe mother description NICE LOOKING FOR HER AGE. AGAIN FAIR-HAIRED
Joe father description A BIT RUMPLED AND TOO THIN. CIGARETTES, COFFEE HAVE TAKEN THEIR TOLL ON HIS HEALTH. LOOKS OLDER THAN HE IS.

Is Chance in Runner based off anyone? YES. I HAD A STUDENT WHO LIVED ON A SAILBOAT WITH AN ALCOHOLIC FATHER. NICE BOY, AND I MODELED CHANCE ON HIS LIVING SITUATION.

how old is he OKAY, I'M ASSUMING YOU MEAN CHANCE . . . 17

What is Drew's last name? HONESTLY, I'M NOT REMEMBERING A DREW IN MY BOOKS, BUT SOMETIMES NAMES GET CHANGED IN THE FINAL EDIT. WHAT BOOK?

what do chance and melissa look like in the book runner? I'M NOT SO GOOD AT PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION. I THINK MELISSA IS MEDIUM HEIGHT WITH DARK HAIR AND BLUE EYES. CHANCE HAS SANDY HAIR AND BROWN EYES--BUT I COULD BE WRONG ABOUT THIS. I DON'T REREAD MY BOOKS ONCE I'M FINISHED WITH THEM.

PPPPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLZZZZZZZZZZ make another gym candy!!! Best book and you left us hangin....!!!!!
I'M FLATTERED YOU LIKED IT SO MUCH. MAYBE SOME DAY I WILL.\

what is your full name CARL DEUKER (NO MIDDLE NAME)

who was the guy that joe recognized putting the cross in the ground of his yard? ROSS

Why did you write gym candy? MAINLY TO DEPICT THE PRESSURE ATHLETES FACE TO GET BIGGER, FASTER, STRONGER,

what awards have you gotten for any books? what books? YA BOOK OF THE YEAR IN NEBRASKA THREE TIMES: HEART OF A CHAMPION, NIGHT HOOPS, HIGHT. YA BOOK OF THE YEAR IN TENNESSEE AND PENNSYLVANIA FOR HEART OF A CHAMPION. YA BOOK OF THE YEAR IN SOUTH CAROLINA FOR ON THE DEVIL'S COURT. YA BOOK OF THE YEAR IN IOWA FOR GYM CANDY.

How many books have you written? EIGHT, WORKING ON A NINTH

Where is the story "Gym Candy" located? SEATTLE--BALLARD AND CROWN HILL NEIGHBORHOODS

When did you discover you wanted to be a writer. How did you know
I ALWAYS LIKED TO TELL STORIES AND READ THEM. WRITING WAS A NATURAL. (ALSO, I'M A BIT OF AN EXAGGERATOR OF TALES, SO THAT DIDN'T HURT EITHER.)
Hi Carl. Why did you write the book Gym Candy? Any reason? I need this for my book report. By the way That was an AMAZING book. THANKS. I'D READ ABOUT THE SUICIDE OF A TEENAGE BASEBALL PLAYER (PITCHER) WHOSE PARENTS DISCOVERED A STASH OF STEROIDS IN HIS ROOM. THAT GOT ME GOING ON THE BOOK.

Hi it's Cara Li, you saw me at Cathey Middle School today. I was trying to email you, it tells me it is an invalid email address. SORRY. I'LL HAVE TO GO THROUGH AND CHECK THE LINKS. cdeuker@gmail.com should work. I look forward to hearing from you.

sequel to gym candy.please, I was so hooked i read it in two days MAYBE SOME DAY, BUT YOU WOULDN'T WANT ME TO RUIN THAT GOOD FEELING YOU HAD FOR GYM CANDY BY WRITING A DOG OF A SEQUEL. I NEED A GOOD IDEA.

WHAT IS THE FALLING ACTION AND RESOLUTION IN THE BOOK NIGHT HOOPS? Ahhhh! This sounds like a class assignment. Read the last few pages, after the game ends. It's all right there . . . short and sweet. Some books have longer resolutions, but not Night Hoops

What is the climax of your book "Heart of a Champion." FOR ME, IT'S THE CRASH

Dakota here once agian. just finished painting the black about 5 minutes ago. a sequal of the book would be great. i have an idea so if you want to know ask for my email if you would like to hear about it. just an idea. 2 more of your books left then i'll be waiting for your next one. SEND ME YOUR IDEA. MY EMAIL LINK IS ON THE HOME PAGE.

Hi Mr.deuker I've read all your books now finishing with night hoops and I was wondering if there was a sequal too it NOT YET, BUT MAYBE SOME DAY

Reading "Gym Candy" with my students once again, and I love it every time. I'd like some professiona advice. I just epublished a book, "Seasons of Change" and I'd like to know how to go your route. Do I send a query letter to the pubisher? Any suggestions would be great. I didn't know you had other books, I'm ordering a couple tonight, you do a great job. I THINK THESE DAYS YOU NEED AN AGENT FIRST, SO GOOGLE LITERARY AGENTS AND THEN READ UP ON WHAT THEY'D LIKE YOU TO SEND THEM. IT WILL PROBABLY BE A CHAPTER AND A SUMMARY OF THE REST. GOOD LUCK!

Are you going to make a second book to gym candy?? you totally should!! that is my new favorite book and mick needs a comebcak!!! MAYBE SOME DAY. I CAN SEE MICK MAKING A COMEBACK AS A LINEBACKER

OMG!! i absolutely L O V E your books! They are so good! Maybe you should make one about a girl that gets pregnant and goes on drugs and the baby dies or something! you know, so girls can also relate. ACTUALLY, I'M THINKING OF HAVING A PLOT SOMETHING LIKE THAT IN MY NEXT BOOK. GREAT MINDS MUST THINK TOGETHER!

Hey Carl, are you ever going to write a book about a hero who is a track/XC runner? "Runner" was sort of that, but then it doesn't have the same vibe your other books like "Gym Candy" and "Painting the Black" had. Anyway, love your works, although I do have to admit, most of them seem to end depressingly. Not like there's anything wrong with that, it makes your books all the more realistic. PAYBACK TIME HAS AN UPBEAT ENDING, MORE OR LESS, AND SO DOES ON THE DEVIL'S COURT. BUT YOU'RE RIGHT, THEY AREN'T FEEL GOOD BOOKS. YOU'RE ALSO RIGHT--RUNNER ISN'T REALLY A RUNNING BOOK AT ALL. I'VE DONE A FAIR SHARE OF RUNNING IN MY TIME, SO I COULD USE THAT AS A PLOT VEHICLE. I HADN'T HONESTLY CONSIDERED IT . . . THANKS FOR THE IDEA.

the quote below was was written by eric a.

CARL DEUKER
WHY IN GYM CANDY DOES HE SHOOT HIMSELF IN THE FACE? DEPRESSION OVER STEROIDS, MESSED UP LIFE, AND EASY ACCESS TO A GUN. ALL THOSE THINGS ADD UP TO A NEAR DISASTER.

What are all of the characters names in night hoops? I HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK IN TEN YEARS. I DON'T REALLY REMEMBER.

Hi Mr. Deuker, I'm about to start reading On the Devil's Court! I can't wait to start it. Is it fast to read? I love fast books. So far, every book I've read by you has been fast.
From, Peter HELLO PETER. I THINK IT'S PRETTY FAST. IT WAS MY FIRST BOOK, SO BACK THEN I WAS MORE IN LOVE WITH EVERY WORD THAT I WROTE AND WAS MORE RELUCTANT TO CUT THINGS OUT. NOW I TRY TO BE RUTHLESS--MOVE THAT STORY ALONG! TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK WHEN YOU FINISH.
NJ

what is the theme of runner. iam doing a project on runner and i need a quote. i am making a movie poster for runner. THEME IS SOMETHING LIKE: WE ARE ALL PART OF A BIGGER WORLD AND WE ALL NEED TO ACT AS RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS OF THAT BIGGER WORLD. GOOD LUCK WITH THE POSTER--MAYBE EMAIL ME A PICTURE. QUOTES-=-=JUST PICK A PARAGRAPH THAT YOU LIKED AND TELL YOUR TEACHER WHY YOU LIKED IT. GOOD LUCK.
My name is Dakota and i read runner and payback time in at least a week. never stopped reading it. i think there should be a second book of runner and payback time. but your books are so good you should really find a producer who would make a movie of a few of your books. GLAD YOU'VE LIKED THEM. I'M ALL FOR A PRODUCER MAKING MOVIES OF THEM--ONLY NONE HAS COME CALLING. FINGERS CROSSED.

Is Gym Candy based on a true story? And Deauker are you goi.g to make a sequal to gym candy? SORT OF. I READ ABOUT A BASEBALL PLAYER WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE AND THAT GOT ME STARTED ON THE STORY. I CHANGED QUITE A BIT, OBVIOUSLY. MAYBE SOMEDAY I'LL WRITE A SEQUEL.

what do you think is the symbol in the book and why I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK YOU MEAN.

Hello, i love your books so much!!!!! :D :D PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a sequel to Gym Candy! BUT YOU DON'T WANT ME TO MAKE A LOUSY SEQUEL THAT RUINS THE GOOD FEELINGS YOU HAVE FOR THE FIRST BOOK, DO YOU? IF I GET A GOOD IDEA FOR A SEQUEL, I WILL WRITE ONE. BUT I DON'T WANT TO WRITE A BAD ONE.

WHat is your adress? I DON'T POST MY ADDRESS ON THE INTERNET. IF YOU SEND ME AN EMAIL, THEN I'LL EMAIL IT TO YOU.

i love you carl dueker. your books are soo great. when is your next one coming out? MARY MEE!
Tom Hastins

What is the setting of the book payback time PAYBACK TIME IS SET IN SEATTLE IN MODERN TIMES.

Hey Mr. Deuker, I just read Runner for an English assignment, and I guess I was wondering if there was going to be a sequel for it about chance in the army or something. Daniel THANKS FOR READING THE BOOK, DANIEL. I DON'T HAVE ANY PLANS FOR A SEQUEL RIGHT NOW, BUT MAYBE SOMEDAY.

Hi Mr.Deuker I loved your book Night Hoops. So i Decided to do a report on you, the author. A couple questions i have are, did you donate to any charities? Help any children"s schools? Or just help kids in general? Please get back to me as soon as you can, thanks! THANKS FOR READING NIGHT HOOPS. CHARITIES: I GIVE TO MERCY CORPS AND THE UNITED WAY OF KING COUNTY. I ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO THE GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY. I TEACH 6TH GRADE FULL-TIME, SO I'D LIKE TO THINK THAT I HELP KIDS IN THAT WAY . . . BUT YOU'D HAVE TO ASK MY STUDENTS!

Hi Mr. Deuker my name is Reanna and i was assigned to read your book GYM CANDY for psychology and do a novel project on it. This book really blew my mind where i would expect one thing to happen when actually something else happened. I'm an athlete as well and this book is one of the best books I've ever read. Would you consider making this book into a movie? I feel that this book should continue on after Mick is in rehab THANKS, REANNA. MOVIES COST A LOT OF MONEY AND REQUIRE AN ENTIRE PRODUCTION COMPANY--THAT'S WAY BEYOND ME. FOR GYM CANDY TO BECOME A MOVIE, A MOVIE-MAKER WOULD HAVE TO READ IT AND LIKE IT, AND THEN DECIDE TO TRY TO COME UP WITH THE MONEY. MAYBE SOMEDAY, BUT NOBODY IS INTERESTED NOW. GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE BOOK

Hi Mr. Deuker it's Peter again, your biggest fan. You inspired me to write a book. I'm not done but I with it, but I really want to know how to get it published. How can I do it myself? Who publishes your books? How do I get someone to publish mine? Who to choose? Can I send it to you when I'm done and you tell me how it is?
From you biggest fan,
Peter
NJ HELLO PETER. TOUGH QUESTIONS. THERE'S NO POINT SENDING IT TO ME BECAUSE I'M ON YOUR SIDE OF THE BUSINESS. MY ADVICE: GOOGLE "LITERARY AGENTS," LOOK OVER THE WEBSITES, AND THEN PICK ONE. SOMETIMES THEY'LL WANT ONLY THE FIRST CHAPTER TO BEGIN WITH. GOOD LUCK. (P.S. IF YOU CAN CUT YOUR BOOK INTO SECTIONS, YOU MIGHT TRY SENDING A 'SHORT STORY' FROM THE BOOK TO A MAGAZINE. WRITER'S DIGEST IS THE BOOK THAT WILL HELP YOU WITH THAT.

hello im joe i got a couple questions for you about heart of a champion. I thought it was a great book first of all but i was wondering if there was a message you were trying to send out? and what exactly was the legimate conflict and resolution?
MESSAGE IS: GOOD KIDS MAKE BAD DECISIONS. MOST OF THE TIME THEY GET AWAY WITH IT, SOMETIMES THEY DON'T. THE SECOND PART SOUNDS LIKE A CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENT. I'M NOT REALLY SURE WHAT YOUR TEACHER WANTS. CONFLICT IS BETWEEN JIMMY AND HIMSELF RE: DRINKING. YOU KNOW HOW IT ENDS.
adwda

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! im so mad at you!!!!!! i read your book heart of a champion and i loved the book but i HATE how jimmy dies!!!!! im never reading another book from SORRY. NOT ALL BOOKS END HAPPILY, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY'RE ABOUT ALCOHOL

Someone should make Nigh Hoops into a move!!! I LOVED that book! I'D LOVE TO SEE IT BE A MOVIE TOO

hi, i am maria from boston. mr. deuker. i love your book is really interesting. i read the runner.i have a question? what relationship are between the social hierarchi and the abuse in the book? CHANCE'S FATHER, ONCE HE'S OUT OF THE ARMY, LOSES CONTROL OF HIS LIFE. HE FALLS TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SOCIAL STRATA, AND THAT'S WHERE DRUG/ALCOHOL ABUSE ARE MOST PREVALENT.

Which of your novels did you enjoy writing most? I'D SAY RUNNER AND HEART OF A CHAMPION. THEY JUST SEEMED TO WRITE THEMSELVES.

You know what, you are like a second father to me- or a best friend. I will never be lonely as long as I pull out a book that you wrote and read it. Also your books calm me, make me happy, sad, excited. You blow each and every author ever to become an author away! I can't believe it. It's almost reading pure gold. If they had author trading cards, your rookie card could get the poorest of the poor, rich.
LONG LIVE CARL DEUKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S ABOUT THE NICEST THING ANYONE HAS EVER WRITTEN TO ME=-=THANK YOU.

dear mr. deuker
what is the climax and conclusion of your outstanding novel high heat? THOSE ARE REALLY THINGS YOU NEED TO DECIDE FOR YOURSELF. THERE ARE A FEW EVENTS AT THE END THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED THE CLIMAX--PICK THE ONE THAT STRUCK YOU THE MOST. THERE'S NO RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWER SO LONG AS YOU GIVE YOUR TEACHER YOUR REASONS.

would you recommend this to a fried to read why or why not? WELL, I'D DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT BECAUSE IT'S SO TERRIFIC, BUT THEN I'M NOT EXACTLY UNBIASED!

dear mr.deuker as the author of high heat what are your favorite parts of your novel high heat. What do you think are the main events? I'M VERY FOND OF THE FIRST SCENE OF HIGH HEAT. I LIKE THE WAY IT SETS UP THE STORY AND PULLS THE READER IN. THE MAIN CHARACTER SEEMS A BIT OBNOXIOUS AT FIRST, BUT THEN WHEN HIS FATHER IS ARRESTED, IT'S HARD NOT TO FEEL FOR HIM.

dear mr.deuker
i am soon to be a graduate from washington university and my professer recommended book runner.I thought is was a childrens book at first. But my professor said dont judge a book by its cover so , I read it and I thought it was a great book , I just fell in love with the character ( TAYLOR ) ,and that book really inspired me alot as a very ypund secussefull person to help out the homeless but i just wanted to say i NEVER CRY , I AM NOT A PERSON WHO CRIES BUT everything that happend to the boy happend to me except the mysterious boxes hahaha but i hope you make your next book based on a true story or something about yuor life because i would be happy to read that kind of book.
sabella bekele
THANK YOU--I'M GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE BOOK, THOUGH I'M SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOUR CHILDHOOD WAS SOMEWHAT LIKE CHANCE'S. NO FUN. I DO INCORPORATE MY OWN LIFE, AND THE LIFE OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY, INTO ALL MY STORIES. I JUST NEVER WRITE A STRAIGHT OUT AUTOBIOGRAPHY.

You and James Patterson should write a sports/thriller together. THAT'S A GREAT COMPLIMENT.

Sorry, I didn't mean to write DID in that last post.
From,
Peter:
NJ.

In Gym Candy, did Daniel (Mitch) what happened to him? does he become a pro? Does he end up like his dad? I am the same person who asked about the theme of Runner.
From your biggest fan,
Peter:
NJ. I THINK HE MAKES A COMEBACK THE NEXT YEAR, PROBABLY SWITCHING POSITIONS THOUGH. I SEE HIM AS A SAFETY, LEARNING NOT TO BE IN THE SPOTLIGHT, AND LIKING IT.

Dear Carl,
The Only books that I actually get into reading are your books. Now that i have read all of them I don't know what else to read. Are there any authors or books that you can recommend to me. Thanks, Matt JOHN FEINSTEIN HAS SOME NICE MYSTERY/SPORTS BOOKS. YOU MIGHT TRY CHRIS CRUTCHER, MIKE LUPICA, RANDY POWELL. GET A FEW FROM THE LIBRARY, READ ABOUT 20 PAGES, AND THEN DECIDE. GOOD LUCK.

From Dan, Warminster PA 18974
What is your writing style? Is there any influences of where your located, personal exeperience, other writers? If so what are they.
Thank you your fan Dan HELLO DAN\I'D SAY MY WRITING STYLE IS PLAIN. I TRY TO MAKE THE STORY SEEM TO JUST HAPPEN. MY GOAL IS FOR YOU, AS A READER, TO TOTALLY FORGET ABOUT THEIR EVEN BEING AN AUTHOR. SO, IT'S EVERYDAY VOCABULARY, REALISTIC SITUATIONS, SHORT DESCRIPTIONS.

Good afternoon Mr. Deuker. First of all, I'd just like to say that I am arguably your biggest fan. I told everyone at school(friends, enemies, neutral people, librarian, teachers)
about how good you are and- believe it or not, I got some people to read your books. I've read Gym Candy, Runner, and Payback Time and they are the 3 best books ever! I have one question about Runner though. What is the theme/moral?
Thank you for your time. THANKS--I SHOULD HIRE YOU AS AN AGENT. THEME OF RUNNER--WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT WE DO. WILLFULLY CLOSING YOUR EYES IN THIS WORLD JUST DOESN'T WORK. CHANCE DOESN'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING, THINKING THAT SOMEHOW THAT MAKES HIM NOT RESPONSIBLE, BUT HE'S LINKED WITH THE WHOLE WORLD AND HE IS RESPONSIBLE.

Who Would be the protagnoist of the story?
Who would be the anotagnoist of the story?
YOU HAVE TO TELL ME WHAT STORY.

What is the plot line for Heart Of A Champion?? Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution AHHHH. THAT'S THE WHOLE BOOK ALL OVER AGAIN. I WROTE HEART OF A CHAMPION OVER 20 YEARS AGO AND HAVEN'T READ IT SINCE. YOU READ IT MUCH MORE RECENTLY, I'M PRESUMING, SO YOU KNOW BETTER THAN I DO.

Are there any baseball young adult books that are similar to yours that you'd recommend? That's the only ones I enjoy reading now IN ALL HONESTY, I DON'T READ BOOKS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY MIGHT BE LIKE MINE. I DID FOR A WHILE, BUT THEN I'D FIND THAT I'D START THINKING THAT THEY WERE DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT AND I WAS DOING EVERYTHING WRONG. I'D START TO COPY THEIR STYLE (CHRIS CRUTCHER, FOR EXAMPLE) AND THEN MY WRITING WOULD BE TERRIBLE. NOT CHRIS CRUTCHER AND NOT ME. SO . . . HERE ARE WRITERS THAT I'M COMPARED WITH: JOHN FEINSTEIN, MIKE LUPICA, RANDY POWELL, WILL WEAVER, CHRIS CRUTCHER. CLASSIC SPORTS STORIES: JOHN TUNIS, THOUGH HIS BOOKS WILL SEEM A LITTLE DATED.

can you please make a sequel on Payback Time about the after happening of angel like were he goes or a story on his football season? MAYBE SOMEDAY I WILL. FOLLOW HIM THROUGH COLLEGE AND INTO CFL. I'M GLAD YOU LIKED PAYBACK TIME ENOUGH TO WANT TO READ MORE.

What is the major theme of "Payback Time" DON'T BE IN A HURRY TO JUDGE OTHER PEOPLE--LIFE IS COMPLICATED.

When do you think you will have another book coming out? I HOPE IN A YEAR OR SO. I'M FINISHING ONE UP NOW, SO IF THE PUBLISHER LIKES IT . . .

Can you please make a Gym Candy 2 and is there a movie coming out for Gym Candy MAYBE SOMEDAY I'LL WRITE A SEQUEL. I'M GLAD YOU LIKED THE FIRST BOOK ENOUGH TO WANT A SECOND.

what is chances dad name THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION. WHEN I WAS WRITING THE CHARACTER, I ALWAYS HAD HIM AS "BOB." HOWEVER, I'M NOT SURE IF THE NAME ACTUALLY APPEARS IN THE BOOK. IF IT DOES, IT WOULD BE IN THE CHAPTER WHERE MELISSA AND CHANCE LOOK AT THE HS PHOTOS OF THEIR FATHERS.

do you workout? If so how much do you benchpress?
EVERY MORNING I GO TO THE GYM. 25 MINUTES OF AEROBIC EXERCISE (BICYCLE OR ELLIPTICAL) FOLLOWED BY 15 MINUTES USING VARIOUS WEIGHT MACHINES. I DO 10 REPS OF 110 FOR THE BENCH PRESS--I'M PAST THE AGE WHERE I'M TRYING TO GET STRONGER; I JUST DON'T WANT TO FALL APART ANY QUICKER THAN I NEED TO.
Who's your favorite author and why? THAT'S A TOUGH QUESTION. I LOVE MOBY DICK BY HERMAN MELVILLE BECAUSE IT COMBINES A GREAT STORY WITH LOTS OF INTERESTING INFORMATION ON WHALES AND WHALING. I ALSO ENJOY POETRY OF ROBERT FROST VERY MUCH. TWO POEMS JUMP OUT: STOPPING BY WOODS AND NATURE'S FIRST GREEN. BUT, TRUTHFULLY, I LOVE TO READ AND THERE ARE MANY, MANY AUTHORS WHOM I GREATLY ENJOY.

How long does it normally take for you to write a book????????????????????????? PROBABLY TWO YEARS.

What is your favorite food? I'VE LIVED IN SEATTLE FOR A LONG TIME, SO . . . BARBECUED SALMON WITH ROASTED POTATOES, CORN ON THE COB, AND AN ARTICHOKE WOULD BE MY FAVORITE MEAL.

in the book the fallen by paul pangan what were some sentences that describe the main setting WRONG AUTHOR--I DON'T KNOW

when were you born? SAN FRANCISCO

what page is the most important quote on in the book? IDON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK?

i love the book Runner and i have a question about it.

What college did Micks dad go to in Gym Candy? I'M EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT I DON'T EXACTLY REMEMBER. I THINK IT WAS U. OF WASHINGTON

what was kaylees last name in gym candy AGAIN, THESE KIND OF DETAILS I JUST DON'T REMEMBER

Is there a sequel to high heat? NOT YET. MAYBE SOMEDAY

Whats the secret that angel is hiding in the end of payback time???? WELL, HIS ENTIRE PAST IN PHILADELPHIA IS THE SECRET HE IS TRYING TO KEEP

What is the theme of Payback Time DON'T BE QUICK TO JUDGE OTHERS--SOMETIMES THE ENTIRE STORY IS NOT SO EASY TO DISCERN

hello! (: Its Megan & Bethany & Ashley , i just wanted to say we LOVED your books! Nights Hoops all the way! HOLLLA! :D THANK YOU! SOME PEOPLE SAY MY BOOKS ARE FOR "BOYS," BUT I'D LIKE TO THINK ANYBODY WHO LIKES SPORTS AND LIKES A GOOD STORY CAN ENJOY THEM. GLAD YOU THREE DID.

If you had to describe the heart of a champion in 7 pictures what would they be? TOO MANY PICTURES. ONE WOULD BE A BASEBALL FIELD, EMPTY, AT THE CLOSE OF DAY. ANOTHER WOULD BE A BOTTLE OF BEER ON A POOL TABLE. A THIRD WOULD BE A CAR SMASHED INTO A TREE.

What a wonderful book... I can't find a lot about depression in the book, so i was wondering when he gets depressed? GYM CANDY, I'M ASSUMING. MORE MOOD SWINGS THAN CLINICAL DEPRESSION, THOUGH THERE IS A POINT WHERE HE THINKS ABOUT SWIMMING OUT INTO PUGET SOUND UNTIL . . . HE DOESN'T FOLLOW IT THROUGH, BUT OF COURSE IT WOULD BE UNTIL HE DIED.

What signs of depression are there in this book? SEE ANSWER JUST ABOVE.

what is the exposition for the book payback by paul langan? YOU KNOW, THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN ASSIGNMENT QUESTION FROM SCHOOL. SINCE I WASN'T IN YOUR CLASS, I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOUR TEACHER IS LOOKING FOR. MOST OF THE TIME, EXPOSITION MEANS THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION. SO, IT WOULD BE MITCH WANTING TO LOSE WEIGHT; MITCH WANTING TO BE A GREAT WRITER; MITCH NOT GETTING TO BE EDITOR BUT GETTING STUCK ON THE SPORTS BEAT.

where can i find a summary of heart of a champion online? great book by the way THANKS--I DON'T KNOW THAT THERE IS A SUMMARY ON LINE ANYWHERE. SITES LIKE SPARK NOTES DON'T GENERALLY GET INVOLVED WITH BOOKS LIKE MINE.

Do you have any kids or are you married? MARRIED TO ANNE MITCHELL WITH ONE DAUGHTER, MARIAN. I DEDICATE MY BOOKS TO BOTH

What's the plot, point of view, and theme of heart of a champion: FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW; ACT RESPONSIBLY IS THE THEME, BUT THE PLOT TAKES WAY TOO LONG--IF YOU'VE READ IT, YOU KNOW IT ANYWAY.

I know Mick shot himself but he didn't die. what were his injuries?
TEMPORARY DEAFNESS, BURNT SCALP, ETC. HE BASICALLY POINTED ALMOST UPWARD AT THE END--DIDN'T REALLY WANT TO DIE.
Why did you write Payback Time? I ENJOYED DOING RUNNER BECAUSE IT HAD A MYSTERY ELEMENT TO IT; I WROTE PAYBACK TIME AS A PERSONAL CHALLENGE, A SPORTS/MYSTERY

(For a project) What is your favorite memories or moments you have had? What are you most attached to? EX: Object, location, hobby
BIRTH OF MY DAUGHTER IS MY FAVORITE MEMORY. ATTACHED TO: I LIKE MY NEIGHBORHOOD QUITE A BIT, DEFINITELY ROOTED TO BALLARD IN SEATTLE. FAVORITE HOBBY IS GOLF; I LOVE PLAYING ON AN EMPTY COURSE IN WIND AND RAIN
thanks bro!

hi this is derek i just got done reading your amazing book called GYM CANDY, i loved this book and i was just wondering what inspired you to write this book. and second is there a way later on that u can make a movie out of this book i think it would get BIG hits. thanks for letting me ask these questions to u.
I'D LOVE TO SEE A MOVIE TOO, BUT THAT WOULD TAKE A FILMMAKER WITH LOTS OF MONEY TO BECOME INTERESTED. FINGERS CROSSED. THE IDEA FROM THE BOOK REALLY CAME FROM THE HEADLINES OF THE NEWSPAPER. I READ ABOUT THE FACT THAT STEROIDS WERE BEING USED IN HS FOOTBALL AND WENT FROM THERE.

GLAD YOU LIKED THE BOOK. I'M ALL FOR A MOVIE, BUT IT WOULD TAKE A FILMMAKER TO BE INTERESTED. MOVIES COST MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO MAKE--WAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE. I GOT THE IDEA FROM THE HEADLINES IN THE NEWSPAPER, TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH.

in payback time what is the mascot of the highschool and what are their colors (lincoln high) THAT'S HARD FOR ME TO REMEMBER. MY GUESS IS THEIR COLORS WERE BLACK AND RED. LINCOLN MUSTANGS MAYBE?

what is the mascot for the high school SEE ANSWER ABOVE. I WROTE THE BOOK FOUR YEARS AGO, AND THAT WASN'T A MAJOR DETAIL FOR ME.

What is the setting of Runner? MODERN TIMES, SEATTLE WASHINGTON ALONG THE PUGET SOUND

what is the point of view of gym candy i'm from elgin, Illinois TOLD FROM FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW

In the book The Runner why have the fat guy drive off the cliff instead of being shot/stabbed on the street somewhere. TWO REASONS. #1 I WANTED HIS DEATH TO BE A MYSTERY. ACCIDENT? MURDER? SUICIDE? #2 THERE WAS AN ACTUAL EVENT AT THAT PARK WITH A CAR GOING OVER THE CLIFF. I KNOW THE SPOT, SAW THE DAMAGE TO THE FENCE, ETC. IT'S ALWAYS BETTER TO WRITE ABOUT THINGS (EVEN BAD THINGS) THAT YOU KNOW.

Hi I have 2 questions the first being y do most of your books have alcohol or drugs and my second being will runner have a sequal thanks BOOKS NEED PROBLEMS TO BE INTERESTING, AND THE MOST TYPICAL PROBLEMS FOR ADULTS AND TEENAGERS INVOLVE ALCOHOL AND DRUGS. IT WOULD BE HARD TO FIND A FAMILY THAT DOESN'T HAVE SOMEBODY WITH A PROBLEM WITH ONE OR THE OTHER. MAYBE NOT PARENTS--BUT UNCLES, AUNTS, COUSINS, ETC.

MAYBE SOMEDAY I'LL WRITE A SEQUEL, BUT NO PLAYS RIGHT NOW. THANKS FOR READING MY BOOKS.

i have a question, is ur book gym candy a movie? if its not one i believe it would be a great movie! i thought it was the best book i ever read. THANK YOU. THERE IS NO MOVIE, BUT I'M WITH YOU--I'D LIKE TO SEE IT TOO.

Why does chance need more hours at work THE FAMILY IS POOR, SO MORE HOURS MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR HIM TO PAY THE BILLS AND BUY SOME FOOD AND MAYBE HAVE A LITTLE EXTRA.

I read gym candy and I couldn't put it down to save my own life. I really felt as if i was Mick. the weird thing about it was that I play a lineman and hes a running back. I felt so amazed by that. OH, I DON'T KNOW. YOU GO THROUGH THE SAME PAIN THAT ALL FOOTBALL PLAYERS
