FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Runner has been translated into Portugese and is available in Brazil.

ARE YOU GOING TO WRITE SEQUELS TO ANY OF YOUR BOOKS?

Probably not. I appreciate the fact that readers ask for sequels. It's a great compliment. But I've found that most sequels aren't as good as the original, and I've also found that reading a bad sequel somehow spoils the first book. So unless a really strong idea comes to me, I'm going to shy away from sequels.

The Greatest!

When did you start writing?

When I was in high school, a friend and I would sit in the back of English class and write poems and songs in the style of Bob Dylan. We'd pass these back and forth to one another, careful to avoid the eye of our teacher. No writing in English class back then! It was the lyrics of Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Leonard Cohen that got me going with words.

Where do you get ideas?

The plot for On the Devil's Court came from Dr. Faustus, which is mentioned in the book. Heart of a Champion comes from events in my own life, as does Painting the Black. With Night Hoops, I took a sad event in my life -- I had a student involved in a fatal shooting on the Burke Gilman trail -- and made a sad story in real life come out better in fiction. High Heat--I was beaned when I was in 8th grade. I was never the player that Reese was, but after being knocked unconscious I was no player at all. Runner came to life after the events of 9/11. The horrors of terrorism were on my mind; I wanted to write about it somehow but didn't know much, so I came up with a plot that involves terrorism through disengagement. Gym Candy is about steroids and sports: the idea came straight from the headlines.

Hi Mr. Deuker, I'm about to start reading On the Devil's Court! I can't wait to start it. Is it fast to read? I love fast books. So far, every book I've read by you has been fast.
From, Peter HELLO PETER. I THINK IT'S PRETTY FAST. IT WAS MY FIRST BOOK, SO BACK THEN I WAS MORE IN LOVE WITH EVERY WORD THAT I WROTE AND WAS MORE RELUCTANT TO CUT THINGS OUT. NOW I TRY TO BE RUTHLESS--MOVE THAT STORY ALONG! TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK WHEN YOU FINISH.

what is the theme of runner. iam doing a project on runner and i need a quote. i am making a movie poster for runner. THEME IS SOMETHING LIKE: WE ARE ALL PART OF A BIGGER WORLD AND WE ALL NEED TO ACT AS RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS OF THAT BIGGER WORLD. GOOD LUCK WITH THE POSTER--MAYBE EMAIL ME A PICTURE. QUOTES-=-=JUST PICK A PARAGRAPH THAT YOU LIKED AND TELL YOUR TEACHER WHY YOU LIKED IT. GOOD LUCK.
My name is Dakota and i read runner and payback time in at least a week. never stopped reading it. i think there should be a second book of runner and payback time. but your books are so good you should really find a producer who would make a movie of a few of your books. GLAD YOU'VE LIKED THEM. I'M ALL FOR A PRODUCER MAKING MOVIES OF THEM--ONLY NONE HAS COME CALLING. FINGERS CROSSED.

Is Gym Candy based on a true story? And Deauker are you goi.g to make a sequal to gym candy? SORT OF. I READ ABOUT A BASEBALL PLAYER WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE AND THAT GOT ME STARTED ON THE STORY. I CHANGED QUITE A BIT, OBVIOUSLY. MAYBE SOMEDAY I'LL WRITE A SEQUEL.

what do you think is the symbol in the book and why I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK YOU MEAN.

Hello, i love your books so much!!!!! :D :D PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a sequel to Gym Candy! BUT YOU DON'T WANT ME TO MAKE A LOUSY SEQUEL THAT RUINS THE GOOD FEELINGS YOU HAVE FOR THE FIRST BOOK, DO YOU? IF I GET A GOOD IDEA FOR A SEQUEL, I WILL WRITE ONE. BUT I DON'T WANT TO WRITE A BAD ONE.

WHat is your adress? I DON'T POST MY ADDRESS ON THE INTERNET. IF YOU SEND ME AN EMAIL, THEN I'LL EMAIL IT TO YOU.

i love you carl dueker. your books are soo great. when is your next one coming out? MARY MEE!
Tom Hastins

What is the setting of the book payback time PAYBACK TIME IS SET IN SEATTLE IN MODERN TIMES.

Hey Mr. Deuker, I just read Runner for an English assignment, and I guess I was wondering if there was going to be a sequel for it about chance in the army or something. Daniel THANKS FOR READING THE BOOK, DANIEL. I DON'T HAVE ANY PLANS FOR A SEQUEL RIGHT NOW, BUT MAYBE SOMEDAY.

Hi Mr.Deuker I loved your book Night Hoops. So i Decided to do a report on you, the author. A couple questions i have are, did you donate to any charities? Help any children"s schools? Or just help kids in general? Please get back to me as soon as you can, thanks! THANKS FOR READING NIGHT HOOPS. CHARITIES: I GIVE TO MERCY CORPS AND THE UNITED WAY OF KING COUNTY. I ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO THE GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY. I TEACH 6TH GRADE FULL-TIME, SO I'D LIKE TO THINK THAT I HELP KIDS IN THAT WAY . . . BUT YOU'D HAVE TO ASK MY STUDENTS!

Hi Mr. Deuker my name is Reanna and i was assigned to read your book GYM CANDY for psychology and do a novel project on it. This book really blew my mind where i would expect one thing to happen when actually something else happened. I'm an athlete as well and this book is one of the best books I've ever read. Would you consider making this book into a movie? I feel that this book should continue on after Mick is in rehab THANKS, REANNA. MOVIES COST A LOT OF MONEY AND REQUIRE AN ENTIRE PRODUCTION COMPANY--THAT'S WAY BEYOND ME. FOR GYM CANDY TO BECOME A MOVIE, A MOVIE-MAKER WOULD HAVE TO READ IT AND LIKE IT, AND THEN DECIDE TO TRY TO COME UP WITH THE MONEY. MAYBE SOMEDAY, BUT NOBODY IS INTERESTED NOW. GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE BOOK

Hi Mr. Deuker it's Peter again, your biggest fan. You inspired me to write a book. I'm not done but I with it, but I really want to know how to get it published. How can I do it myself? Who publishes your books? How do I get someone to publish mine? Who to choose? Can I send it to you when I'm done and you tell me how it is?
From you biggest fan,
Peter
NJ HELLO PETER. TOUGH QUESTIONS. THERE'S NO POINT SENDING IT TO ME BECAUSE I'M ON YOUR SIDE OF THE BUSINESS. MY ADVICE: GOOGLE "LITERARY AGENTS," LOOK OVER THE WEBSITES, AND THEN PICK ONE. SOMETIMES THEY'LL WANT ONLY THE FIRST CHAPTER TO BEGIN WITH. GOOD LUCK. (P.S. IF YOU CAN CUT YOUR BOOK INTO SECTIONS, YOU MIGHT TRY SENDING A 'SHORT STORY' FROM THE BOOK TO A MAGAZINE. WRITER'S DIGEST IS THE BOOK THAT WILL HELP YOU WITH THAT.

hello im joe i got a couple questions for you about heart of a champion. I thought it was a great book first of all but i was wondering if there was a message you were trying to send out? and what exactly was the legimate conflict and resolution?
MESSAGE IS: GOOD KIDS MAKE BAD DECISIONS. MOST OF THE TIME THEY GET AWAY WITH IT, SOMETIMES THEY DON'T. THE SECOND PART SOUNDS LIKE A CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENT. I'M NOT REALLY SURE WHAT YOUR TEACHER WANTS. CONFLICT IS BETWEEN JIMMY AND HIMSELF RE: DRINKING. YOU KNOW HOW IT ENDS.
adwda

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! im so mad at you!!!!!! i read your book heart of a champion and i loved the book but i HATE how jimmy dies!!!!! im never reading another book from SORRY. NOT ALL BOOKS END HAPPILY, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY'RE ABOUT ALCOHOL

Someone should make Nigh Hoops into a move!!! I LOVED that book! I'D LOVE TO SEE IT BE A MOVIE TOO

hi, i am maria from boston. mr. deuker. i love your book is really interesting. i read the runner.i have a question? what relationship are between the social hierarchi and the abuse in the book? CHANCE'S FATHER, ONCE HE'S OUT OF THE ARMY, LOSES CONTROL OF HIS LIFE. HE FALLS TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SOCIAL STRATA, AND THAT'S WHERE DRUG/ALCOHOL ABUSE ARE MOST PREVALENT.

Which of your novels did you enjoy writing most? I'D SAY RUNNER AND HEART OF A CHAMPION. THEY JUST SEEMED TO WRITE THEMSELVES.

You know what, you are like a second father to me- or a best friend. I will never be lonely as long as I pull out a book that you wrote and read it. Also your books calm me, make me happy, sad, excited. You blow each and every author ever to become an author away! I can't believe it. It's almost reading pure gold. If they had author trading cards, your rookie card could get the poorest of the poor, rich.
LONG LIVE CARL DEUKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S ABOUT THE NICEST THING ANYONE HAS EVER WRITTEN TO ME=-=THANK YOU.

dear mr. deuker
what is the climax and conclusion of your outstanding novel high heat? THOSE ARE REALLY THINGS YOU NEED TO DECIDE FOR YOURSELF. THERE ARE A FEW EVENTS AT THE END THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED THE CLIMAX--PICK THE ONE THAT STRUCK YOU THE MOST. THERE'S NO RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWER SO LONG AS YOU GIVE YOUR TEACHER YOUR REASONS.

would you recommend this to a fried to read why or why not? WELL, I'D DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT BECAUSE IT'S SO TERRIFIC, BUT THEN I'M NOT EXACTLY UNBIASED!

dear mr.deuker as the author of high heat what are your favorite parts of your novel high heat. What do you think are the main events? I'M VERY FOND OF THE FIRST SCENE OF HIGH HEAT. I LIKE THE WAY IT SETS UP THE STORY AND PULLS THE READER IN. THE MAIN CHARACTER SEEMS A BIT OBNOXIOUS AT FIRST, BUT THEN WHEN HIS FATHER IS ARRESTED, IT'S HARD NOT TO FEEL FOR HIM.

dear mr.deuker
i am soon to be a graduate from washington university and my professer recommended book runner.I thought is was a childrens book at first. But my professor said dont judge a book by its cover so , I read it and I thought it was a great book , I just fell in love with the character ( TAYLOR ) ,and that book really inspired me alot as a very ypund secussefull person to help out the homeless but i just wanted to say i NEVER CRY , I AM NOT A PERSON WHO CRIES BUT everything that happend to the boy happend to me except the mysterious boxes hahaha but i hope you make your next book based on a true story or something about yuor life because i would be happy to read that kind of book.
sabella bekele
THANK YOU--I'M GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE BOOK, THOUGH I'M SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOUR CHILDHOOD WAS SOMEWHAT LIKE CHANCE'S. NO FUN. I DO INCORPORATE MY OWN LIFE, AND THE LIFE OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY, INTO ALL MY STORIES. I JUST NEVER WRITE A STRAIGHT OUT AUTOBIOGRAPHY.

You and James Patterson should write a sports/thriller together. THAT'S A GREAT COMPLIMENT.

Sorry, I didn't mean to write DID in that last post.
From,
Peter:
NJ.

In Gym Candy, did Daniel (Mitch) what happened to him? does he become a pro? Does he end up like his dad? I am the same person who asked about the theme of Runner.
From your biggest fan,
Peter:
NJ. I THINK HE MAKES A COMEBACK THE NEXT YEAR, PROBABLY SWITCHING POSITIONS THOUGH. I SEE HIM AS A SAFETY, LEARNING NOT TO BE IN THE SPOTLIGHT, AND LIKING IT.

Dear Carl,
The Only books that I actually get into reading are your books. Now that i have read all of them I don't know what else to read. Are there any authors or books that you can recommend to me. Thanks, Matt JOHN FEINSTEIN HAS SOME NICE MYSTERY/SPORTS BOOKS. YOU MIGHT TRY CHRIS CRUTCHER, MIKE LUPICA, RANDY POWELL. GET A FEW FROM THE LIBRARY, READ ABOUT 20 PAGES, AND THEN DECIDE. GOOD LUCK.

From Dan, Warminster PA 18974
What is your writing style? Is there any influences of where your located, personal exeperience, other writers? If so what are they.
Thank you your fan Dan HELLO DAN\I'D SAY MY WRITING STYLE IS PLAIN. I TRY TO MAKE THE STORY SEEM TO JUST HAPPEN. MY GOAL IS FOR YOU, AS A READER, TO TOTALLY FORGET ABOUT THEIR EVEN BEING AN AUTHOR. SO, IT'S EVERYDAY VOCABULARY, REALISTIC SITUATIONS, SHORT DESCRIPTIONS.

Good afternoon Mr. Deuker. First of all, I'd just like to say that I am arguably your biggest fan. I told everyone at school(friends, enemies, neutral people, librarian, teachers)
about how good you are and- believe it or not, I got some people to read your books. I've read Gym Candy, Runner, and Payback Time and they are the 3 best books ever! I have one question about Runner though. What is the theme/moral?
Thank you for your time. THANKS--I SHOULD HIRE YOU AS AN AGENT. THEME OF RUNNER--WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT WE DO. WILLFULLY CLOSING YOUR EYES IN THIS WORLD JUST DOESN'T WORK. CHANCE DOESN'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING, THINKING THAT SOMEHOW THAT MAKES HIM NOT RESPONSIBLE, BUT HE'S LINKED WITH THE WHOLE WORLD AND HE IS RESPONSIBLE.

Who Would be the protagnoist of the story?
Who would be the anotagnoist of the story?
YOU HAVE TO TELL ME WHAT STORY.

What is the plot line for Heart Of A Champion?? Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution AHHHH. THAT'S THE WHOLE BOOK ALL OVER AGAIN. I WROTE HEART OF A CHAMPION OVER 20 YEARS AGO AND HAVEN'T READ IT SINCE. YOU READ IT MUCH MORE RECENTLY, I'M PRESUMING, SO YOU KNOW BETTER THAN I DO.

Are there any baseball young adult books that are similar to yours that you'd recommend? That's the only ones I enjoy reading now IN ALL HONESTY, I DON'T READ BOOKS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY MIGHT BE LIKE MINE. I DID FOR A WHILE, BUT THEN I'D FIND THAT I'D START THINKING THAT THEY WERE DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT AND I WAS DOING EVERYTHING WRONG. I'D START TO COPY THEIR STYLE (CHRIS CRUTCHER, FOR EXAMPLE) AND THEN MY WRITING WOULD BE TERRIBLE. NOT CHRIS CRUTCHER AND NOT ME. SO . . . HERE ARE WRITERS THAT I'M COMPARED WITH: JOHN FEINSTEIN, MIKE LUPICA, RANDY POWELL, WILL WEAVER, CHRIS CRUTCHER. CLASSIC SPORTS STORIES: JOHN TUNIS, THOUGH HIS BOOKS WILL SEEM A LITTLE DATED.

can you please make a sequel on Payback Time about the after happening of angel like were he goes or a story on his football season? MAYBE SOMEDAY I WILL. FOLLOW HIM THROUGH COLLEGE AND INTO CFL. I'M GLAD YOU LIKED PAYBACK TIME ENOUGH TO WANT TO READ MORE.

What is the major theme of "Payback Time" DON'T BE IN A HURRY TO JUDGE OTHER PEOPLE--LIFE IS COMPLICATED.

When do you think you will have another book coming out? I HOPE IN A YEAR OR SO. I'M FINISHING ONE UP NOW, SO IF THE PUBLISHER LIKES IT . . .

Can you please make a Gym Candy 2 and is there a movie coming out for Gym Candy MAYBE SOMEDAY I'LL WRITE A SEQUEL. I'M GLAD YOU LIKED THE FIRST BOOK ENOUGH TO WANT A SECOND.

what is chances dad name THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION. WHEN I WAS WRITING THE CHARACTER, I ALWAYS HAD HIM AS "BOB." HOWEVER, I'M NOT SURE IF THE NAME ACTUALLY APPEARS IN THE BOOK. IF IT DOES, IT WOULD BE IN THE CHAPTER WHERE MELISSA AND CHANCE LOOK AT THE HS PHOTOS OF THEIR FATHERS.

do you workout? If so how much do you benchpress?
EVERY MORNING I GO TO THE GYM. 25 MINUTES OF AEROBIC EXERCISE (BICYCLE OR ELLIPTICAL) FOLLOWED BY 15 MINUTES USING VARIOUS WEIGHT MACHINES. I DO 10 REPS OF 110 FOR THE BENCH PRESS--I'M PAST THE AGE WHERE I'M TRYING TO GET STRONGER; I JUST DON'T WANT TO FALL APART ANY QUICKER THAN I NEED TO.
Who's your favorite author and why? THAT'S A TOUGH QUESTION. I LOVE MOBY DICK BY HERMAN MELVILLE BECAUSE IT COMBINES A GREAT STORY WITH LOTS OF INTERESTING INFORMATION ON WHALES AND WHALING. I ALSO ENJOY POETRY OF ROBERT FROST VERY MUCH. TWO POEMS JUMP OUT: STOPPING BY WOODS AND NATURE'S FIRST GREEN. BUT, TRUTHFULLY, I LOVE TO READ AND THERE ARE MANY, MANY AUTHORS WHOM I GREATLY ENJOY.

How long does it normally take for you to write a book????????????????????????? PROBABLY TWO YEARS.

What is your favorite food? I'VE LIVED IN SEATTLE FOR A LONG TIME, SO . . . BARBECUED SALMON WITH ROASTED POTATOES, CORN ON THE COB, AND AN ARTICHOKE WOULD BE MY FAVORITE MEAL.

in the book the fallen by paul pangan what were some sentences that describe the main setting WRONG AUTHOR--I DON'T KNOW

when were you born? SAN FRANCISCO

what page is the most important quote on in the book? IDON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK?

i love the book Runner and i have a question about it.

What college did Micks dad go to in Gym Candy? I'M EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT I DON'T EXACTLY REMEMBER. I THINK IT WAS U. OF WASHINGTON

what was kaylees last name in gym candy AGAIN, THESE KIND OF DETAILS I JUST DON'T REMEMBER

Is there a sequel to high heat? NOT YET. MAYBE SOMEDAY

Whats the secret that angel is hiding in the end of payback time???? WELL, HIS ENTIRE PAST IN PHILADELPHIA IS THE SECRET HE IS TRYING TO KEEP

What is the theme of Payback Time DON'T BE QUICK TO JUDGE OTHERS--SOMETIMES THE ENTIRE STORY IS NOT SO EASY TO DISCERN

hello! (: Its Megan & Bethany & Ashley , i just wanted to say we LOVED your books! Nights Hoops all the way! HOLLLA! :D THANK YOU! SOME PEOPLE SAY MY BOOKS ARE FOR "BOYS," BUT I'D LIKE TO THINK ANYBODY WHO LIKES SPORTS AND LIKES A GOOD STORY CAN ENJOY THEM. GLAD YOU THREE DID.

If you had to describe the heart of a champion in 7 pictures what would they be? TOO MANY PICTURES. ONE WOULD BE A BASEBALL FIELD, EMPTY, AT THE CLOSE OF DAY. ANOTHER WOULD BE A BOTTLE OF BEER ON A POOL TABLE. A THIRD WOULD BE A CAR SMASHED INTO A TREE.

What a wonderful book... I can't find a lot about depression in the book, so i was wondering when he gets depressed? GYM CANDY, I'M ASSUMING. MORE MOOD SWINGS THAN CLINICAL DEPRESSION, THOUGH THERE IS A POINT WHERE HE THINKS ABOUT SWIMMING OUT INTO PUGET SOUND UNTIL . . . HE DOESN'T FOLLOW IT THROUGH, BUT OF COURSE IT WOULD BE UNTIL HE DIED.

What signs of depression are there in this book? SEE ANSWER JUST ABOVE.

what is the exposition for the book payback by paul langan? YOU KNOW, THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN ASSIGNMENT QUESTION FROM SCHOOL. SINCE I WASN'T IN YOUR CLASS, I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOUR TEACHER IS LOOKING FOR. MOST OF THE TIME, EXPOSITION MEANS THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION. SO, IT WOULD BE MITCH WANTING TO LOSE WEIGHT; MITCH WANTING TO BE A GREAT WRITER; MITCH NOT GETTING TO BE EDITOR BUT GETTING STUCK ON THE SPORTS BEAT.

where can i find a summary of heart of a champion online? great book by the way THANKS--I DON'T KNOW THAT THERE IS A SUMMARY ON LINE ANYWHERE. SITES LIKE SPARK NOTES DON'T GENERALLY GET INVOLVED WITH BOOKS LIKE MINE.

Do you have any kids or are you married? MARRIED TO ANNE MITCHELL WITH ONE DAUGHTER, MARIAN. I DEDICATE MY BOOKS TO BOTH

What's the plot, point of view, and theme of heart of a champion: FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW; ACT RESPONSIBLY IS THE THEME, BUT THE PLOT TAKES WAY TOO LONG--IF YOU'VE READ IT, YOU KNOW IT ANYWAY.

I know Mick shot himself but he didn't die. what were his injuries?
TEMPORARY DEAFNESS, BURNT SCALP, ETC. HE BASICALLY POINTED ALMOST UPWARD AT THE END--DIDN'T REALLY WANT TO DIE.
Why did you write Payback Time? I ENJOYED DOING RUNNER BECAUSE IT HAD A MYSTERY ELEMENT TO IT; I WROTE PAYBACK TIME AS A PERSONAL CHALLENGE, A SPORTS/MYSTERY

(For a project) What is your favorite memories or moments you have had? What are you most attached to? EX: Object, location, hobby
BIRTH OF MY DAUGHTER IS MY FAVORITE MEMORY. ATTACHED TO: I LIKE MY NEIGHBORHOOD QUITE A BIT, DEFINITELY ROOTED TO BALLARD IN SEATTLE. FAVORITE HOBBY IS GOLF; I LOVE PLAYING ON AN EMPTY COURSE IN WIND AND RAIN
thanks bro!

hi this is derek i just got done reading your amazing book called GYM CANDY, i loved this book and i was just wondering what inspired you to write this book. and second is there a way later on that u can make a movie out of this book i think it would get BIG hits. thanks for letting me ask these questions to u.
I'D LOVE TO SEE A MOVIE TOO, BUT THAT WOULD TAKE A FILMMAKER WITH LOTS OF MONEY TO BECOME INTERESTED. FINGERS CROSSED. THE IDEA FROM THE BOOK REALLY CAME FROM THE HEADLINES OF THE NEWSPAPER. I READ ABOUT THE FACT THAT STEROIDS WERE BEING USED IN HS FOOTBALL AND WENT FROM THERE.
lincoln high q city Longmont Colorado
GLAD YOU LIKED THE BOOK. I'M ALL FOR A MOVIE, BUT IT WOULD TAKE A FILMMAKER TO BE INTERESTED. MOVIES COST MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO MAKE--WAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE. I GOT THE IDEA FROM THE HEADLINES IN THE NEWSPAPER, TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH.

in payback time what is the mascot of the highschool and what are their colors (lincoln high) THAT'S HARD FOR ME TO REMEMBER. MY GUESS IS THEIR COLORS WERE BLACK AND RED. LINCOLN MUSTANGS MAYBE?

what is the mascot for the high school SEE ANSWER ABOVE. I WROTE THE BOOK FOUR YEARS AGO, AND THAT WASN'T A MAJOR DETAIL FOR ME.

What is the setting of Runner? MODERN TIMES, SEATTLE WASHINGTON ALONG THE PUGET SOUND

what is the point of view of gym candy i'm from elgin, Illinois TOLD FROM FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW

In the book The Runner why have the fat guy drive off the cliff instead of being shot/stabbed on the street somewhere. TWO REASONS. #1 I WANTED HIS DEATH TO BE A MYSTERY. ACCIDENT? MURDER? SUICIDE? #2 THERE WAS AN ACTUAL EVENT AT THAT PARK WITH A CAR GOING OVER THE CLIFF. I KNOW THE SPOT, SAW THE DAMAGE TO THE FENCE, ETC. IT'S ALWAYS BETTER TO WRITE ABOUT THINGS (EVEN BAD THINGS) THAT YOU KNOW.

Hi I have 2 questions the first being y do most of your books have alcohol or drugs and my second being will runner have a sequal thanks BOOKS NEED PROBLEMS TO BE INTERESTING, AND THE MOST TYPICAL PROBLEMS FOR ADULTS AND TEENAGERS INVOLVE ALCOHOL AND DRUGS. IT WOULD BE HARD TO FIND A FAMILY THAT DOESN'T HAVE SOMEBODY WITH A PROBLEM WITH ONE OR THE OTHER. MAYBE NOT PARENTS--BUT UNCLES, AUNTS, COUSINS, ETC.

MAYBE SOMEDAY I'LL WRITE A SEQUEL, BUT NO PLAYS RIGHT NOW. THANKS FOR READING MY BOOKS.
Joplin mo

hey my names megan and i just read ur book gym candy. its a perfect book for a movie. i would by it if it was one. but u shoul dmake a movie out of it HOPEFULLY SOME FILMMAKER WILL AGREE WITH YOU SOMEDAY. THANKS FOR READING THE BOOK.

i have a question, is ur book gym candy a movie? if its not one i believe it would be a great movie! i thought it was the best book i ever read. THANK YOU. THERE IS NO MOVIE, BUT I'M WITH YOU--I'D LIKE TO SEE IT TOO.

Why does chance need more hours at work THE FAMILY IS POOR, SO MORE HOURS MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR HIM TO PAY THE BILLS AND BUY SOME FOOD AND MAYBE HAVE A LITTLE EXTRA.

I read gym candy and I couldn't put it down to save my own life. I really felt as if i was Mick. the weird thing about it was that I play a lineman and hes a running back. I felt so amazed by that. OH, I DON'T KNOW. YOU GO THROUGH THE SAME PAIN THAT ALL FOOTBALL PLAYERS GO THROUGH. YOU HAVE THE SAME DESIRE TO SUCCEED, SO EVEN THOUGH HE PLAYS A DIFFERENT POSITION, THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY YOU'D BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY. THANKS FOR READING THE BOOK.

Have you ever tried to make gym candy a movie?I think it would make an amazing movie....you should ask a director IF I KNEW ANY DIRECTORS, I WOULD. THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT. FINGERS CROSSED THAT SOME FILMMAKER SOMEDAY AGREES WITH YOU.

When do you think "Swagger" will be published? My name is Max I just turned 11 and finished all your books over the last few months and can't wait for your next book. I'M HOPING TO FINISH THE FIRST DRAFT THIS MONTH, SO IT'S AT LEAST A YEAR AWAY. I'M HAVING TROUBLE FINISHING THIS ONE.

Max Saddle River NJ

who are the characters of night hoops? and what are their character sketches? TRENT DAWSON IS ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS, BUT YOU'LL HAVE TO FIND THE OTHER ONES YOURSELF.

Is the book Gym Candy based on an actual character or event? IT WAS INSPIRED BY REAL EVENTS--A HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PLAYER WHO GOT INVOLVED IN STEROIDS. I USED HIS STORY TO GET STARTED, BUT MOST OF IT IS MY OWN INVENTION.

could you describe the main caracthers of the book (On the Devil's Court)?? WELL, THERE'S ROSS AND JOE FAUST--BUT THIS SEEMS LIKE YOUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT. I'M BETTER AT CREATING CHARACTERS THAN DOING ANALYSIS OF THEM. ALSO, I WROTE DEVIL'S COURT 20 YEARS AGO--I DON'T REMEMBER IT ALL THAT WELL.

tampa.fl

mr.deuker I think you should sell the movie rights to any one of your books they would all make great movies and I'd really enjoy to see them.THANKS, I'D LOVE FOR ONE OF THEM TO BE MADE INTO A MOVIE, TOO, BUT THAT'S NOT UP TO THE AUTHOR. SOME FILMMAKER WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU.

just wanted to say you are the only author i can read from your books are the type of books that you can read in one sitting without putting it down THANK YOU--THAT'S A WONDERFUL COMPLIMENT.

What do you think the genre of your book Gym Candy is? I was thinking sports, but is that a real genre? PROBABLY REALISTIC SPORTS FICTION

what is the plot of this story night hoops NIGHT HOOPS IS A BASKETBALL BOOK ABOUT TWO HIGH SCHOOL BOYS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH FAMILY PROBLEMS.

When does your new book come out ??? FIRST I HAVE TO FINISH IT. IT'S A STRUGGLE RIGHT NOW

Alex
Chicago, IL

Runner was a great book, but I am very curious about what happens to chance. Does he stay with Melissas family and work hard to get into a college like Yale or Princeton or does he go away to miltary school? Does he ever find his mom?
HE JOINS THE ARMY.
Runner was the greatest book I've ever read. It just had so much detail, I felt like I was actually in the story. THANK YOU.

Can you give me a description of Chance Taylor
18 YEARS OLD, RUNNER'S BULD, THE TRUTH IS, PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION OF CHARACTERS IS NOT MY STRONG POINT. I'M BETTER AT WRITING WHAT GOES ON IN THEIR MINDS.
Is there an audio version of Runner available?

Catie W NO AUDIO OF RUNNER. WRITERS DON'T HAVE CONTROL OF THAT. THERE WILL BE AUDIO OF PAYBACK TIME.
Omaha, NE

Jake M,
I just wanted to say i loved Gym Candy and it was just one of those books that just made you wanna keep reading and reading. THANK YOU.

No their isnt a 2nd gym candy CORRECT

Mike K,
i was wondering, i just finished gym candy not too long ago, is there another gym candy continued version? cause i heard there was and wasnt. THERE ISN'T A SEQUEL

Hey noah..if u read it it tells you like 8 times

Why are there so many capitalization errors in High Heat? I THINK THEY CHANGED FONTS ON THE PUBLISHED VERSION AND SOMEHOW THE CAPITALS FROM ONE FONT DIDN'T TRANSLATE. THAT'S ALL I CAN FIGURE--IT'S IRRITATING, THOUGH.

the call

Hey Carl! I loved your books the Runner and Gym Candy! I have a question though. What was Chances dreams and goals in the book the runner? THAT'S PART OF HIS PROBLEM. HE'D LOST HIS BELIEF THAT LIFE HELD MUCH PROMISE FOR HIM. DEPRESSED, UNHAPPY--NO REAL PLANS. DRIFTING.

hey my name is Noah i have a 6th grade lit project I read your book gym candy and it was AWESOME!!! But i turned it in and I need to know what the setting is I think it is New jersey
tell me if its right and if its wrong tell me what it is SETTING IS IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON IN MODERN TIMES. THANKS FOR READING THE BOOK

I MAY SOMEDAY WRITE A SEQUEL, BUT NOT RIGHT NOW. THANKS FOR READING IT SO MANY TIMES. THAT'S A GREAT COMPLIMENT.

hey my name is tyler and i picked your book high heat for my highschool lit project and it was a great book and i was trying to find books like it for my next lit project any of your books like high heat or any that have football in it? GYM CANDY AND PAYBACK TIME BOTH HAVE LOTS OF FOOTBALL.

Heyy mr. deuker, i just wanted to say that i just finished the book runner, and it was reallyyyy good. thank you for writing it. I think you should write a sequel to it so we can see what happens in chances life after highschool. Also i was wondering....when does your new book swagger come out.

From,

chase

when was the book high heat made 2003

what team plays lincoln in the championship game for "payback time? FERRIS HIGH

Who at the school asked Mick if he was using gym candy?
I'M SORRY TO SAY THAT I DON'T REMEMBER DETAILS OF THAT BOOK. YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT I'M WORKING ON A NEW BOOK NOW, AND THOSE ARE THE CHARACTERS THAT ARE FRESH IN MY MIND. SORRY.
Who are the antagonists in Gym Candy?
Emily Aurora,IL I SUPPOSE DREW IS, AT THE END. ALSO THE LINEBACKER, 44, WHO STOPS MICK AND MAKES HIM AWARE THAT HE ISN'T ALL POWERFUL.

your Book is the best!!! NEVADA MO. ClayZingy
THANKS, AND THANKS FOR INCLUDING YOUR CITY. I'LL STICK A PIN IN MY MAP.
Hi i really liked your book thanks for making it! GLAD TO HEAR IT.

in the book gym candy why is Mick Black. HE ISN'T.

How many pages is the book Runner? AROUND 230

What is the theme of Gym Candy? PROBABLY SOMETHING LIKE--ACCEPT YOUR LIMITATIONS, DON'T TRY TO BE SOMEONE YOU'RE NOT. DANGER LIES IN THAT DIRECTION.

I recently read Gym Candy and I LOVED IT and it is now my favorite book.
But i dont understand how the setting is important. Do you know?
Emily
HELLO EMILY, THANKS. I THINK YOUR PROBABLY BEING ASKED HOW THE SETTING INFLUENCES THE BOOK. SO, I'D SAY THAT SOME OF THE MAIN EVENTS TAKE PLACE IN A GYM WHERE STEROID USE IS ACCEPTABLE. IN THAT SETTING, MICK IS MORE LIKELY TO THINK DRUGS ARE OKAY.

Scarsdale,NY

What Pages are the two questions on the home page from???????????? I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS QUESTION

How old were you when you wrote your first novel.I WAS 36 WHEN I STARTED ON THE DEVIL'S COURT. I'D BEEN TRYING TO WRITE BOOKS FOR YEARS BEFORE THAT, WITHOUT SUCCESS.

from a manzano student Ryan

how does it feel to be a famous author and is ruuner a true story PARTS OF RUNNER ARE TRUE. THERE WAS A TERRORIST ARRESTED IN WASHINGTON STATE WITH PLASTIC EXPLOSIVES IN HIS TRUNK. THERE WERE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS INVOLVED IN SMUGGLING DRUGS IN BACKPACKS. I TOO THE VARIOUS EVENTS AND CHANGED THEM TO FIT WITH THE STORY. AS FAR AS BEING FAMOUS GOES, I ALWAYS WANTED TO WRITE A BOOK, SO I'M DELIGHTED THAT I'VE HAD EIGHT PUBLISHED, BUT I'M NOT FAMOUS.

what is your impression of Fat Mancho?in sleepers story it is on book 1 chapter 8 I'M SORRY, I DON'T QUITE UNDERSTAND THIS QUESTION.

How is it to be a famous author. Do you feel the same way before you started writing or do you feel like you have a million dollars. I'M NOT A FAMOUS AUTHOR, AND I DON'T HAVE A MILLION DOLLARS,BUT WRITING IS A CHALLENGE TO ME, AND HAVING BOOKS PUBLISHED MAKES ME FEEL LIKE A FACED A DIFFICULT TASK AND COMPLETED IT. FOR SOME REASON, A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T GENERALLY LIKE TO READ TELL ME THAT THEY ENJOY MY BOOKS. THAT'S VERY GRATIFYING. I LOVE READING AND KNOWING THAT I'VE BEEN ABLE TO MAKES SOME NON-READERS ENJOY BOOKS IS GREAT.

From a Manzano Middle School Student name Julian

I'm a junior high teacher and your book, Heart of a Champion, is on our seventh grade summer reading list. Apparently, someone complained about the subject matter of your book and there is now discussion about replacing the novel with something else. I absolutely LOVE the book, think it opens up the eyes of many boy readers, and think it is a great discussion starter both at home and in the classroom. Has this book been removed from any school that you know of? NO, IT HASN'T, BUT I'M NOT TOTALLY SURPRISED BY YOUR LETTER. BY TODAY'S STANDARDS, HEART OF A CHAMPION IS HARDLY EDGY, BUT THERE IS A GROUP OF ADULTS WHO JUST DON'T WANT TO FACE UP TO THE FACT THAT HIGH SCHOOL DRINKING HASN'T GONE AWAY AND ISN'T GOING AWAY. SIMILARLY, THE ONE "SEX" SCENE WITH TUSTIN--I'D GUESS THAT AT LEAST 25% OF KIDS FIND THEMSELVES IN A ??? SITUATION AT ONE POINT IN THEIR ADOLESCENCE. I'VE NEVER HAD A TEEN-AGER WRITE AND SAY THAT EITHER THEM WAS UMNREALISTIC. GOOD LUCK, AND KEEP ME POSTED.

What is the theme of Night Hoops. PEOPLE NEED TO FEEL CONNECTED TO A COMMUNITY; IF THEY BECOME DISCONNECTED, BAD THINGS HAPPEN.

Help! I need to know 5 main events for the book runner ASAP please and thank you!
I'M DONE WITH SCHOOL--I WRITE THE BOOKS, YOU HAVE TO DO THE SCHOOLWORK. SORRY
what are the careers in the book I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS QUESTION.

what inspired you to write gym candy? AN 18 YEAR OLD BASEBALL PLAYER, AND STEROID USER, COMMITTED SUICIDE. I READ ABOUT THAT EVENT AND GOT STARTED ON GYM CANDY.

im doin this paper on u and i need to know how u get story ideas cuz i cant get any answers to it SOME COME FROM MY ONW LIFE, SOME COME FROM THINGS THAT HAPPEN TO PEOPLE I KNOW, AND SOME IDEAS COME FROM THE NEWSPAPER. FINALLY, SOME JUST MYSTERIOUSLY COME TO ME.

do u just look at things and come up with ideas or do they just pop up to ur mind cuz im doin this paper about u and i need to know how u get srtory ideas IT'S A COMBINATION OF BOTH OF THOSE THINGS.

Hello Mr. Deuker. My names Jon. I was just wondering if you have ever thought about maybe finding a way to make Gym Candy a movie. I think it would be a great movie! I would go see it for sure! WRITERS DON'T HAVE ANY CONTROL OVER WHETHER MOVIES ARE MADE OF THEIR BOOKS. THERE ARE VERY FEW MOVIES COMPARED TO BOOKS, SO IT'S A LITTLE LIKE BEING HIT BY LIGHTNING. NOT LIKELY, BUT THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT. I'D LOVE TO SEE A MOVIE TOO.

how many books are u fixin to keep writing?
oh and i thought that gym candy was a verey very good book I'LL KEEP WRITING AS LONG AS I KEEP HAVING GOOD IDEAS. IF I RUN OUT OF IDEAS, I'LL STOP.

Mr. Deuker,
i have just recently read you book "Gym Candy". WOW, i loved it, plus i think im going to read it again. i was just wondering if you were going to write a sequal, or maybe a prequal about his fathers accomplishments. and if so, when will i be able to read it.
From Jake I LIKE THE PREQUEL IDEA--I HADN'T THOUGHT OF THAT. IF I CAN COME UP WITH A DECENT PLOT . . . THANK YOU

I just finished reading Gym Candy for the second time. Really hoping for a sequel!! MAYBE SOMEDAY, THANKS FOR READING IT AGAIN.

Hi Mr. Deuker My name is Jared and i have a quick question what inspired you to write Gym Candy.... It is a fantastic book. Please answer as quick as possible thank you I READ IN THE NEWSPAPER ABOUT A BASEBALL PLAYER (18 YEARS OLD) WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE. HIS PARENTS DISCOVERED HE HAD BECOME A HEAVY STEROID USER. THAT GOT ME GOING ON THE PLOT.
From, Jared

What is the theme and plot of Gym Candy? THAT'S WAY MORE THAN I CAN GIVE IN A COUPLE OF LINES. I'M GUESSING YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK. GIVE IT A TRY, YOU MIGHT ENJOY IT.

i loved gym candy, it was the only book i read i couldnt stop reading. i was so dissapointed at the ending. if you dont write a sequel than i will make one. I MIGHT MAKE ONE SOMEDAY, BUT YOU GO RIGHT AHEAD. THE MORE WRITERS THE BETTER!

Mr. Deuker,
How does Mick Johnson view himself before and after he took steroids? WELL, THAT'S REALLY FOR YOU TO DECIDE. MY GENERAL FEELING IS THAT HE WAS SPIRALING DOWN BEFORE HE TOOK STEROIDS, EXPECTED THE STEROIDS TO BOOST HIM, THEY DID ON THE PLAYING FIELD BUT NOT IN LIFE.

Mr. Deuker,
How would you say other people in the novel "Gym Candy", view Mick Johnson? VARIES FROM PERSON TO PERSON, BUT UNTIL HE STARTS ACTING STRANGELY, HE'S ADMIRED. ATHLETIC ABILITY GIVES PEOPLE STATUS--MANY DON'T LIKE THAT FACT, BUT IT'S TRUE, AND NOT JUST IN SCHOOL. EVEN AMONG ADULTS, AN ATHLETIC PERSON HAS A LEG UP ON AN UNATHLETIC PERSON.

Gym Candy was well written and inspired me to be a great writer like Carl Deuker. His books are like haven when I read them. I could spend the hole day commiting myself to a book by Carl Deuker. THANKS

i loved gym candy but i forgot who offer mick the idea tat he should use the "gym candy" PETER VOLZ, HIS TRAINGER

i was upset with the ending of gym candy, he shot himself but missed??? thats all you could come up with? i personally loved the book but the ending left me wanting more than shooting the skin off his scalp
PROBLEM I FACED WAS . . . IF HE KILLS HIMSELF, THEN HOW DOES HE TELL THE STORY? I TRIED TO SORT OF SET UP THE MISS BY HAVING HIS HAND JERK AT THE GUN RANGE. ALSO, IT DOES HAPPEN THAT PEOPLE WHO DON'T REALLY WANT TO KILL THEMSELVES AT THE LAST SECOND AIM UP. BUT . . . I HEAR YOU. AFTER IT WAS PUBLISHED, ANOTHER ENDING CAME TO ME. I COULD HAVE SWITCHED, IN THE FINAL CHAPTER, TO PRESENT TENSE. "NOW I'M HOLDING THE GUN, POINTING IT AT . . . ETC." THEN SUICIDE ENDING WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE. THE LAST SENTENCE WOULD HAVE BEEN: "ONE . . . TWO . . . SQUEE
I DON'T KNOW IF I'D HAVE USED THAT ENDING IF I'D THOUGHT OF IT IN TIME, BUT SINCE I DIDN'T THINK OF IT IN TIME, IT IS PAST WORRYING ABOUT. GLAD YOU LIKED THE REST OF IT.

I was wondering if you could help me identify some literary devices in Runner. -Jr- MAIN ONE IS FIRST PERSON NARRATION. BY HAVING CHANCE TELL THE STORY, THE READER LEARNS THINGS ONLY WHEN CHANCE LEARNS THEM. IN THIRD PERSON NARRATION, THE OPPOSITE IS USUALLY THE CASE. THE READER KNOWS THINGS THAT THE CHARACTERS DON'T KNOW. THERE'S ALSO A LITTLE FORESHADOWING GOING ON WITH CHANCE'S FATHER. THE READER LEARNS, EARLY ON, THAT HE WAS A GOOD SOLDIER, THAT HE WAS BRAVE AND CAPABLE. THOSE CHARACTERISTICS EMERGE AGAIN IN THE ENDING.

how does the runner end I CAN'T GIVE AWAY THE ENDING HERE!

when was the runner published? I DON'T KNOW OFFHAND. IT WOULD SAY ON THE FIRST PAGES OF THE BOOK.

when was the runner published?

Hello Mr. Dueker, I just recently finished reading "Runner", and I enjoyed it very much. What I couldn't get back from the book was what the theme was....could you please help me out? THEME WOULD BE THAT EVERY PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS, AND THAT EVERY PERSON'S ACTIONS RIPPLE OUT INTO SOCIETY. CHANCE THINKS CARRYING THE PACKAGES IS NO BIG DEAL. HE THINKS THAT BY BEING IGNORANT OF WHAT IS INSIDE, HE'S INNOCENT. HE LEARNS IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY
Thanks!

How did Seth grow???? HE'S PRETTY MUCH IN JIMMY'S SHADOW EARLY ON, BUT BY THE END HE'S MAKING DECISIONS SEPARATE FROM JIMMY. HE COMES TO SEE WHAT HIS PLACE IN THE WORLD IS, AND HE DOES WHAT HE THINKS IS RIGHT.

Hi my name is brendan and i am in a sophmore english class. Im not big into the books we are reading, Tale of two cities ect... so for our essay i chsose to do Gym Candy. It is my favorite book of all time and i have read it over 10 times. I was wondering your opinion of the them though. Would you say regret? or how competitiveness can overcome your views of right and wrong? Thanks for your help BOTH OF THOSE ARE FINE. I LIKE REGRET BECAUSE IN LIFE, YOU DON'T GET A CHANCE TO HIT THE REWIND BUTTON AND GO BACK AND CHANGE THINGS. BUT THAT SINGLE-MINDED DESIRE TO WIN AT ALL COSTS ALSO IS A BIG PART OF THE STORY. THANKS FOR THE NICE WORDS ABOUT THE BOOK.

gym candy would be a awesome movie. THANKS

Hey Mr. Deuker, I just read Runner and I loved it, but I was wondering what the major and minor conflicts were. MAJOR CONFLICT IS INSIDE CHANCE. WHAT KIND OF PERSON IS HE GOING TO BE? WILL HE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS ACTIONS OR NOT? SMALLER CONFLICTS WOULD BE THE ARGUMENTS WITH HIS FATHER, WITH MILLER, AND WITH MELISSA.

what is the theme of payback time? LIFE IS COMPLICATED; PEOPLE ARE COMPLICATED; WITHHOLD JUDGEMENT, BECAUSE IT'S EASY TO BE DECEIVED BY THE SUPERFICIAL APPEARANCE OF THINGS.

hi mr.deuker!! i love the book runner but i was just wondering what is the chance taylor's dads name? THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION. IN MY NOTES, HE WAS BOB TAYLOR, BUT I DON'T KNOW IF THE NAME APPEARS IN THE BOOK.

Hey Mr. Deuker, love your books, I was just wondering what Seth's mother's name is in Heart of a Champion.
Thanks a bunch, Justin THANKS JUSTIN. I'M NOT SURE IT COMES UP IN THE NOVEL, BUT IN MY NOTES HER NAME WAS MARIE. SOMETIMES THINGS LIKE THAT GET EDITED OUT OR CHANGED AT THE LAST MINUTE.

Dear Mr. Deuker,
I have read your book runner for summer reading at my school. I liked it very much. I was just wondering, are you the illustrator for the book also? If you could reply back soon it would really help :)
Sincerly,
Lindsay
THANKS, LINDSAY, GLAD YOU LIKED IT. NO, I'M NO ILLUSTRATOR. I DON'T HAVE THE BOOK IN FRONT OF ME, BUT I'D GUESS THAT SOMEWHERE IN THE FINE PRINT ON THE FIRST FEW PAGES YOU WILL FIND SOMETHING THAT SAYS: COVER ART BY . . .
IT'S ACTUALLY QUITE ACCURATE. THE PATH ALONG THE BOATS AT SHILSHOLE BAY MARINA IN SEATTLE LOOKS A GREAT DEAL LIKE THAT.

im doing a project for school and i was just wondering, what insipred you to be a writter. I LIKED TO READ, FIRST OF ALL, AND I ALWAYS LIKED TO TELL STORIES. I'D TAKE AN EVENT THAT HAPPENED AND SPRUCE IT UP A LITTLE TO MAKE IT MORE ENTERTAINING FOR FRIENDS. NOW, INSTEAD OF DOING THAT OUT LOUD, I DO IT WITH PEN AND PAPER.

describe the relationship between Melissa and Chance. . . WHY DO I THINK THIS IS A TEST QUESTION? OKAY, I'LL GIVE YOU THE BASICS AND YOU'LL HAVE TO FLESH IT OUT. CONTRASTS: RICH/POOR STABLE FAMILY/DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY SECURE FUTURE/QUESTIONABLE FUTURE ESTABLISHED IN SCHOOL/LONER SIMILARITIES: BOTH ARE INTELLIGENT, SENSITIVE PEOPLE, NOT FULL OF THEMSELVES

i already returned the book runner and forgot the thing that melissa confronts him about can you please help me
SHE ASKS HIM WHAT IT IS HE IS TAKING OUT FROM THE ROCKS

hi
In the last event should i put down the thing about the terrorist attack or should that be my conclusion and i also need to know the climax of the story

hey im dakota and i was wondering what one of the main events were besides jimmy dying and them winning the championship JIMMY'S FATHER BEING A DRINKER, GETTING DRUNK AT THE GIANT'S GAME, YELLING AT JIMMY'S MOTHER. THAT SETS THE STAGE FOR JIMMY'S MISTAKES.

how long was Mick in drug rehab at the end of the book?
TWO OR THREE WEEKS.
I read Runner for Summer reading and it w]as awesome. I need to know the setting and the real name of Fat Guy. Thx. FAT GUY NEVER GOT A NAME IN THE BOOK. SETTING IS SEATTLE IN MODERN TIMES--AFTER 9/11/2001

does micks dad give him the popeyes membership during spring? THAT'S TOO DETAILED FOR ME TO REMEMBER.

hey there Mr. Deuker i have a question why did mick start to take steroids again... please respond quickly i need this soon thanks HE DIDN'T TRUST HIMSELF AND HIS OWN ABILITY. SELF DOUBT, SELF FEAR, FEAR OF FAILURE, DESIRE TO OUTDO HIS FATHER, FEAR HE CAN'T OUTDO HIS FATHER--LOTS OF REASONS.

how many pages are in nght hoops THERE ARE DIFFERENT EDITIONS. THE PAPERBACK WITH THE DARK COVER HAS 212

Hey I am reading painting the black and I need to know the setting, problem, how the characters tried to solve the problem, and the solution. If you can get back to me that would be great! SETTING IS SEATTLE IN MODERN TIMES. PROBLEM--WELL, IF YOU READ THE BOOK YOU KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND HOW IT RESOLVES ITSELF. I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL IT FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T READ IT.

what page does mick say "I don't have to keep doing it once, i could always quit!" SORRY, I DON'T KNOW THAT. PAGE NUMBERS CHANGE FROM WHAT I SUBMIT AND FROM WHAT SHOWS UP ON THE PRINTED AGE.

Can you name at least 4 main characters from the book On The Devils Court? JOE FAUST, ROSS, JOE'S FATHER, JOE'S MOTHER.

hi the book that i need the 5 main events is runner and you would help me a lot because im sort of confused. WELL, IF YOU'VE READ IT, AND I ASSUME YOU HAVE, THEN YOU KNOW THE ENDING--WHICH I WON'T GIVE AWAY. BEFORE THAT: CHANCE'S MOTHER LEAVES HIM; CHANCE'S FATHER CAN'T GET A JOB; CHANCE CARRIES PACKAGES FOR THE FAT GUY; MELISSA SEES WHAT CHANCE IS UP TO

Hi Mr deuker
I have to do a project for school and i am having a lot of trouble.I have already read the book but I need to know the 5 main events in order the begging of the book to the end. I'M ASSUMING YOU'RE THE SAME PERSON AS ABOVE. HERE'S ANOTHER WAY TO DO IT. THE BOOK IS BROKEN INTO PARTS. LOOK AT EACH PART AND SEE WHAT THE MAIN EVENT IS. THEN, IN THE LAST PART, FIND TWO MAIN EVENTS.

what are the settings of the book gym candy SETTING ALMOST ALWAYS MEANS TIME AND PLACE. ALL YOU NEED TO SEE IS A HIGH SCHOOL IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON DURING MODERN TIMES.

Runner was very good(: Wish we could have had more dialogue between Chance and Melissa, though. Sequel? Eh, eh? MAYBE SOME DAY. THE PROBLEM IS I'D HAVE TO FOLLOW CHANCE TO THE MIDDLE EAST, AND I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THAT EXPERIENCE

What was Melissa's last name in the book Runner I THINK IT'S WATTS. THAT'S WHAT I CALLED HER IN MY DRAFTS. SOMETIMES NAMES GET CHANGED AT THE LAST MINUTE, THOUGH.

Hi Mr. Deuker,
I am reading your book Heart of a Champion and I was wondering if you would ever make a book about ice hockey. I love hockey and sports book and if you made one about hockey, that would be the best haha.
Sincerely,
Alexi Harney. HELLO ALEXI, THAT WOULD BE A CHALLENGE FOR ME AS I NEVER PLAYED ICE HOCKEY. IT IS A FANTASTIC GAME; WHEN GRETZKY PLAYED I WAS TOTALLY HOOKED.

I have been using your books for the past ten years in my middle school classroom. I am spotlighting you as an author again this year. I was wondering if you would be willing or able to send just a book cover with your signature (and even a little note)? The kids think it is neat to see that authors are "real" just like their teachers. Is there a way to send you an email with my personal information? Thank you for your time! I look forward to reading your next book!
RIGHT ABOVE THIS IS A LINK TO MY EMAIL. I HAVE MANY BOOKMARKS FOR RUNNER THAT I CAN SIGN AND SEND ALONG TO YOU. JUST TELL ME HOW MANY YOU NEED. I'D BE GLAD TO WRITE A NOTE TO YOUR CLASS AS WELL. THANKS FOR USING MY BOOKS.

who is the person that says to melissa in the book runner your probably glad he died why dont you join al-quida

I WROTE THE BOOK A FEW YEARS AGO, SO I DON'T REMEMBER. I DO KNOW IT'S ONE OF THE KIDS IN HER CLASS, AND THAT IT COMES ABOUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BOOK.

Hey mr. Deuker can u write a baseball book next like heart of a champion cause I love baseball I'M WORKING ON A BASKETBALL BOOK NOW, BUT I DO PLAN ON WRITING MORE BASEBALL BOOKS. HAVE YOU READ HIGH HEAT OR PAINTING THE BLACK? THEY ARE BOTH BASEBALL BOOKS.

What is the setting in Gym Candy? I've searched the book twice over and have yet to find it.USUALLY WHEN YOU ARE ASKED FOR SETTING, YOU ARE BEING ASKED FOR THE TIME PERIOD IN WHICH THE BOOK TAKES PLACE AND THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA. SO, FOR GYM CANDY, THE TIME PERIOD WOULD BE IN MODERN TIMES (2005 OR SO) AND THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA WOULD BE IN AND AROUND SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.

what are the names of your awards and for which books. I need them for reading assignments for high school
MY BOOKS HAVE WON STATE AWARDS FOR "BEST YOUNG ADULT" NOVEL OF THE YEAR.

ON THE DEVIL'S COURT: SOUTH CAROLINA
HEART OF A CHAMPION: PENNSYLVANIA, TENNESSEE, NEBRASKA
NIGHT HOOPS: NEBRASKA
HIGH HEAT: NEBRASKA
GYM CANDY: IOWA

THEY'VE BEEN NOMINATED IN MANY OTHER STATES, AND THEY'VE BEEN NAMED TO VARIOUS LISTS, BUT THOSE ARE THE AWARDS.

My son is in special ed and has a tough time reading. How many pages are in your book Heart of a Champion? HEART OF A CHAMPION HAS AROUND 200 PAGES, DEPENDING ON THE EDITION. IF HE LIKES BASEBALL, THAT'S THE BOOK TO GET HIM. IF HE'S NOT A SPORTS FAN, RUNNER WOULD BE MY RECOMMENDATION. I'VE NEVER ONCE THOUGHT ABOUT WRITING FOR RELUCTANT READERS, BUT FOR SOME REASON KIDS WHO DON'T GENERALLY LIKE TO READ OFTEN FIND MY BOOKS ENJOYABLE. HOPE YOUR SON DOES TOO.

f you ever write a sequel to gym candy what year do you think youll write it in? PROBABLY IN FIVE YEARS OR SO. I'VE GOT A COUPLE OF OTHER PROJECTS GOING.

In the book, Gym candy what page did he say, "I don't have to keep doing it once, I could always quit"? SORRY, I DON'T KNOW. YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT IT HAS BEEN YEARS SINCE I WROTE GYM CANDY.

Are you going to make another basketball book? I AM WORKING ON ONE RIGHT NOW, THANKS FOR ASKING.

CARRRRRL(: Wassup Buddy? Hows Life? Doin Good? Good. Do You Have Any Pets?
LoveLoveLoveLove.....-Toriii(((:HELLO TORI, NO PETS NOW--ALLERGIES, UNFORTUNATELY. HAD DOGS GROWING UP--TRINI A NORWEGIAN (MUTT) ELKHOUND LIVED TO 16 YEARS OLD. GREAT DOG, BUT A BARKER--ACTUALLY BARKED AT AIRPLANES AS THEY FLEW OVER THE YARD. AS A TEACHER I HAD PET RATS IN THE CLASSROOM. I LIKED THEM, BUT SCHOOL DOESN'T ALLOW IT ANY MORE BECAUSE OF ALLERGY PROBLEMS OF KIDS. GREAT LITTLE ANIMALS, ONCE YOU GET PAST THE FACT THEY ARE RATS.

Hi Mr. Deuker! I'm doing in a poster for a 9th grade project and I was wondering how Chance, Melissa, and Chance's dad show bravery... thanks! -Katie
HELLO KATIE
CHANCE'S DAD TAKES ON THE TERRORISTS AT THE END, SO THAT'S PRETTY EASY. MELISSA IS BRAVE IN THAT SHE CONFRONTS CHANCE--SHE DOESN'T IGNORE THINGS. CHANCE IS BRAVE IN THAT HE HAS A TOUGH LIFE, BUT HE KEEPS FIGHTING. AT THE END, WHEN HE COULD DO THE EASY THING AND LIVE WITH M.'S PARENTS, HE DECIDES TO JOIN THE ARMED FORCES AND DISCOVER HIS OWN LIFE. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT.
sorry that wasn't yr comment below mine n didn't leave a my name, its Jesse. GLAD TO HEAR FROM YOU, JESSE. DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE FORM FOR THIS PAGE, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE RELAXED . . . NOT A SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT! ENJOY SUMMER

i finished your book "runner" and i really loved it!i read below that sequels aren't yr thing but still gatta ask will there be a sequel or maybe anything new like the runner?i like the covers on yr books! :D GLAD YOU LIKED THE BOOK AND I AGREE 100% ABOUT THE RECENT COVERS. THAT'S THE PUBLISHER'S RESPONSIBILITY. THEY HAVE BEEN HIRING EXCELLENT ARTISTS, THAT'S FOR SURE. PAYBACK TIME IS A BIT LIKE RUNNER IN THAT IT IS A MYSTERY AS WELL AS A SPORTS STORY. I HOPE TO WRITE MORE MYSTERY/THRILLERS IN THE FUTURE, EVEN IF THEY AREN'T SEQUELS.

i just finished reading your book "Payback Time", and i loved it!!! Is there going to be a sequel to the book?? THAT'S A COMMON QUESTION. I'M NOT WILD ABOUT SEQUELS BECAUSE 90% (OR MORE) AREN'T AS GOOD AS THE FIRST BOOK. MAYBE SOMEDAY, BUT NO PLANS NOW. THANKS FOR READING IT.

signed,
Trish
HELLO TRISH, MAYBE SOMEDAY I'LL WRITE A SEQUEL, BUT RIGHT NOW I'M HARD AT WORK ON AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT STORY. WHEN I FINISH A BOOK, I LIKE TO START SOMETHING NEW

My Friend, Peighton...She Says Hi(: We Like, REALLY Like Your Books, I Didnt Know You Had A Daughter..Whats Her Name?
-Tori&Peighton(: MARIAN. SHE JUST GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE (:

Dear BFF,
I Would Like To Know Your Favorite Color(:
-Toriiiiiii WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS FOUR OR FIVE, SHE TOLD ME WITH GREAT CERTAINTY THAT MY FAVORITE COLOR WAS GREEN. SO, SINCE THAT DAY I'VE FOUND MYSELF QUITE PARTIAL TO GREEN. BEFORE THAT, I'D HAVE SAID RED.

hey i had to read high heat for summer reading and i really got in to it i only like books that i can get into fast and that's what happened. I was not sure if it was going to be good but it was. that was the first book that i read of yours and now i am going to read painting the black. But i really loved high heat and i would like to know if there is a sequel. If there is not i think you should write one please write back GLAD YOU LIKED IT, AND I HOPE YOU LIKE PAINTING THE BLACK. MY OTHER BASEBALL BOOK IS HEART OF A CHAMPION. I MAY SOMEDAY WRITE A SEQUEL, BUT I HAVEN'T YET.

I am answering questions on ur awesome book Runner and this is one of the questions "What did Chance do that made him feel like he looked suspisous?" Can u pls help me im lost CHANCE ASKS TO GET OUT OF THE DEAL, AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES HIM SUSPICIOUS. WHY WOULD HE WANT TO GIVE UP THE MONEY, THE BAD GUYS MUST HAVE THOUGHT. THEY KNEW HE WAS POOR.

Who is the illustrator of of the cover on On the Devil's Court? I DON'T KNOW WHICH EDITION YOU ARE REFERRING TO. THERE ARE THREE. IF YOU TELL ME WHETHER IT IS HARDBOUND OR PAPERBACK, AND WHETHER IT IS PUBLISHED BY LITTLE BROWN OR AVON, THEN I CAN TRY TO FIND OUT.

Hey Carl..
I Know I Havent Written Much Lately, But Do You Have A Facebook? And I Think We Are Gonna Be BestFriends.. Askin You What Animal You Prefer Was A Test, You Passed(:
Your Koala Luvin Buddy-Tori¢¾ NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN. NO FACEBOOK. AS YOU CAN SEE I HAVE TROUBLE KEEPING THIS PAGE UP TO DATE.

I teach jr. high English and I use your novels as read alouds in my class. They are truly amazing - they capture the students' attention and have them coming to class begging to read! Thank you for such wonderful books! THANK YOU, AND THANKS FOR USING THE BOOKS. LOTS OF TEACHERS BEMOAN THE FACT THAT BOYS DON'T LIKE TO READ AND DON'T LIKE TO WRITE, BUT IF YOU GIVE THEM BOOKS THEY'RE INTERESTED IN, THEY'LL READ. AND IF YOU LET THEM WRITE A STORY WITH A LITTLE VIOLENCE IN IT, THEY'LL WRITE. WE CAN'T KEEP SAYING: WELL, WHAT YOU'RE INTERESTED IN READING ISN'T "REAL LITERATURE" AND WHAT YOU'RE INTERESTED IN WRITING ISN'T "APPROPRIATE" AND THEN BE SURPRISED THAT ENGLISH CLASS ISN'T THEIR FAVORITE THING.

Is is soul truly gone now? At the end I'M ASSUMING YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT ON THE DEVIL'S COURT. MY ANSWER . . . NO. HE TALKED HIMSELF INTO THE WHOLE DEVIL THING, AND THEN USED THAT TO GIVE HIMSELF CONFIDENCE. THAT'S WHAT SUPERSTITION IS. HE REALLY DID IT ALL HIMSELF. THE LINE AT THE END ABOUT "OPENING DOORS BY HIMSELF" INDICATES THAT HE'S GROWN UP AND DOESN'T BELIEVE HE SOLD HIS SOUL.

thank you

Question:

From your perspective as the author what do you think of the book? I LIKE ALL MY BOOKS. THERE'S NOT ONE THAT I THINK IS A DOG, AND I'M PROUD OF THAT.

Make this great book into a movie please! I WISH I COULD, THOUGH I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK YOU MEAN. THANKS FOR READING IT.

What was your inspiration for writing Payback time? Thanks! THERE WAS A HORRIBLE KILLING OF A 10 YEAR OLD BOY IN PHILADELPHIA, VERY MUCH LIKE THE ONE DESCRIBED IN THE BOOK. IT TOOK PLACE NOT FAR FROM WHERE MY GRANDPARENTS LIVED, SO I KNEW THE AREA A LITTLE. THAT GOT MY STORY GOING.

Thank you very much for your help on the information about your writing style...that helped alot!

I have to write a 1 1/2 page essay on your writing style, and I just can not seem to grasp exactly what your writing style is. Help? YOU MAY NOT REALIZE IT, BUT THAT'S A GREAT COMPLIMENT. IT MEANS THE BOOKS FLOW ALONG WITHOUT CALLING ATTENTION TO STYLE. THAT SAID, YES, I CAN HELP. FIRST OF ALL, YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT THE FACT THAT I USE FIRST PERSON (I) NARRATIVE. THAT GIVES THE BOOK AN IMMEDIACY. SO SELECT A PASSAGE WHERE YOU REALLY GET INTO THE MAIN CHARACTER'S HEAD AND QUOTE IT. THEN WRITE ABOUT HOW IF IT WEREN'T FIRST PERSON, THE READER WOULDN'T FEEL SO CLOSE TO THE CHARACTER. NEXT, YOU CAN TALK ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE VOCABULARY IS SIMPLE. THAT'S ON PURPOSE TO MAKE THE BOOK FEEL LIKE IT'S BEING SPOKEN OR WRITTEN BY AN AVERAGE KID, NOT SOME AUTHOR. QUOTE A COUPLE OF SENTENCES AND WRITE ABOUT HOW ORDINARY THEY ARE. PERHAPS FIND A MORE STYLISH SENTENCE FROM ANOTHER WRITER TO CONTRAST MY PLAIN STYLE WITH. YOU CAN THEN DO THE SAME THING WITH LENGTH OF SENTENCES. YOU'LL FIND MOST OF THEM ARE SHORT, SO THAT ALSO MAKES IT FEEL LIKE A TEENAGER IS SAYING/WRITING IT, NOT A PROFESSIONAL AUTHOR. FIND ANOTHER AUTHOR WHO WRITES LONG SENTENCES, AND SHOW THE CONTRAST. IN SHORT, STRESS THAT MY STYLE ATTEMPTS TO SEEM LIKE "NO STYLE." I TRY HARD TO MAKE THE BOOKS FEEL MORE SPOKEN THAN WRITTEN. MY GOAL IS FOR THE READER NOT TO THINK ABOUT THE WRITER ONCE IN THE ENTIRE BOOK. IF I WRITE A PARTICULARLY STRIKING METAPHOR: "THE LAKE SHIMMERED IN THE SUNLIGHT LIKE ACHILLE'S SHIELD MUST HAVE SHIMMERED ON THE FIELDS OF TROY THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO" . . . OR SOME SUCH NONSENSE . . . I CROSS IT OUT. SO, YOUR ESSAY WILL BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN OTHER PEOPLE'S, BUT THAT WILL JUST MAKE IT BETTER. GOOD LUCK!

you should make a sequel to Gym Candy. What do you think?
-Austin Gardner I MIGHT DO THAT SOMEDAY. RIGHT NOW I'M STUCK ON THE BOOK I'M WORKING ON, SO A SEQUEL SOUNDS GOOD

mr. deuker, im thinking about writing some books... got any suggestions for me. YES. WRITE SHORT STORIES FIRST. PERHAPS USE THE SAME CHARACTER(S) IN THEM, AND LINK THEM AS A BOOK, BUT YOU'LL FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOUR EFFORTS IF YOU TRY STORIES.

Hey Carl...I Wanted To Know What Animal You Prefer: Pandas, Or Koalas?
-Tori(: a.k.a Your 1# Fan KOALAS. I'M NOT SURE WHY, PERHAPS BECAUSE I LIKE EUCALYTPTUS TREES AND SO DO KOALAS (I THINK.)

Iam making a PowerPoint about you and ur books and thanx for anwserin gmy questiones. YOU'RE WELCOME

What would you say the actual theme of Runner would be ?
-la
VERY BRIEFLY: WHAT A PERSON CHOOSES TO DO, OR NOT TO DO, EFFECTS NOT ONLY THEM, BUT ALSO MANY OTHERS. WE'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR ACTS AND FOR THOSE RIPPLE EFFECTS.

Bye Thaaannnkks NO SEQUEL YET, MAYBE SOME DAY. JOSH DOESN'T TELL AS A CONTRAST TO WHAT RYAN DOES. I WANTED TO MAKE IT COMPLICATED, NOT SIMPLE, REGARDING WHAT THE RIGHT THING TO DO IS.

HELLO TORI. YOU CAN CLICK EMAIL CARL DEUKER ABOVE AND SEND ME AN EMAIL WITH A QUESTION OR COMMENT. BE GLAD TO HEAR FROM YOU

I liked your book and I'm doing aposter on it for class, so I was wondering what other picture would you use for the cover if you couldn't use the one that you're using right now. YOU HAVEN'T TOLD ME WHICH BOOK, SO I DON'T KNOW HOW TO ANSWER.

what inspired carl to write these books I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED TO WRITE AND TELL STORIES; ALWAYS WANTED TO DO SOMETHING CREATIVE; SO IT WAS A NATURAL. IF YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC BOOK, TELL ME THE TITLE AND I CAN BE MORE DETAILED.

Dear Carl,
Can I Call You Carl? Of Coure I Can..Best Friends Are On A First Name Basis. ANYY WAYY.. Do You Like Pandas, Koalas, Or Rainbows?? I Do..I Think Im Gonna Spam Your Question Wall. Okay? Okay.
-Tori A.k.a. Your New BFF(: OH, DON'T DO THAT. CHECK BACK NOW AND AGAIN IF YOU READ SOMETHING AND HAVE A QUESTION, BUT SPAMMING THIS WILL JUST RUIN IT FOR OTHER PEOPLE. SO PLEASE DON'T

Alrighty then..ITS TORI AGAIN!!!! Will you be my bessfran? PUHLEASE AND THANK YOU!!! HOW ABOUT ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS.

Do you like barney? I LOVE barney! He's the SMEXXIIEESSTT purple dinosaur alive(: My name is Tori and i LOVEEEE gym candy..BEST.BOOK.EVER. Yeeeaaah(: Lol ANyways Answer My Question PUHHLEASE!!!! Kay Thanks Buh BYe(: WHAT'S TO DISLIKE ABOUT BARNEY. GLAD YOU LIKED GYM CANDY. QUITE A COMBINATION--I DON'T GENERALLY THINK OF BARNEY AND GYM CANDY TOGETHER.

Who or what inspired you to write books? ALWAYS LIKED TO WRITE AND TELL STORIES.

Do you actually plan out symbols and motifs? It seems that is all we talk about in English class, and it is hard for me to believe that everything our teacher says is actually something authors plan to be a symbol/motif! YOU ARE CORRECT. I PLAN NOTHING. HOWEVER, IF MY STORY HOLDS TOGETHER, THEN SOME THINGS WILL NATURALLY BECOME SYMBOLS/MOTIFS. I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK YOU ARE READING, BUT IN GYM CANDY, FOR EXAMPLE, THE BLANK WALL IN THE DOWNSTAIRS ROOM THAT IS INTENDED FOR MICK'S ACCOMPLISHMENT IS A SYMBOL OF ALL THE PRESSURE HE FEELS. THAT SAID, I HATE IT WHEN WRITER'S FORCE SYMBOLS INTO BOOKS--IF IT STICKS OUT AS A "SYMBOL," THEN I THINK IT'S BAD WRITING. IF IT JUST SORT OF "IS" A SYMBOL, THEN IT'S GOOD WRITING.

What was the first book u wrote? ON THE DEVIL'S COURT

please give me a metaphor from your book and the page number that it is on HONESTLY, I DON'T READ MY BOOKS ONCE I FINISH THEM. I GO ON TO A NEW PROJECT, SO YOU HAVE AS GOOD A CHANCE OF FINDING A METAPHOR AS I DO.

why did you write heart of a champion, and also if youre going to do another book i recomend baseball because i've read all your baseball books and you are a BEAST! I WILL DEFINITELY DO ANOTHER BASEBALL BOOK, OR AT LEAST TRY TO. I LOVE WRITING ABOUT IT.

Honestly heart of a champion is the best book but two questions. why did you decide to have jimmy die in the end? you could have ended it and wrote a sequel and had him die in the next one. also has anything happened like that to you? thx

-joey

p.s. youre a beast! H OF A C IS BASED ON MY OWN LIFE. I DON'T LIKE DRAGGING STORIES OUT, SO I HAVEN'T WRITTEN ANY SEQUELS.

Heart of a Champioin is the best book I have ever read. What is your address and how did Seth's father die in Heart of a Champion? SEND ME AN EMAIL AND I'LL SEND YOU MY ADDRESS. HE HAD A BRAIN ANEURYSM. IT'S A BLOOD CLOT IN THE BRAIN.

I think you should write another book after GYM CANDY. :) AND I MIGHT SOME DAY.

what is the setting of Heart of a Champion? MODERN TIMES, SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA

What is the Plot of the book. Exposition, Rising Action, Climax,Falling Action, and Resolution. I also want to know about the Theme. BUT, I'VE WRITTEN EIGHT BOOKS AND YOU DON'T TELL ME WHICH ONE. ALSO, THOSE ARE QUESTIONS THAT THE READER GETS TO ANSWER, NOT THE WRITER. WHAT WAS THE EXCITING ACTION FOR YOU? WHAT WAS THE THEME FOR YOU? IT'S NOT LIKE THERE'S ONE THEME FOR EVERYBODY.

are you dead?
i heard that rumor and i wanted to know if it was true because i really like your books THE RUMORS OF MY DEATH, TO QUOTE MARK TWAIN, HAVE BEEN GREATLY EXAGGERATED.

What are the characters names? HARD TO KNOW HOW TO ANSWER THIS ONE. YOU NEED TO READ THE BOOK.

Hello Mr.deuker I think that you should make a sequel to Gym Candy.Maybe you could have the football team switch to a wing T offense.Since in a wing T there are three running backs.so this way you could have Mick, Kane, and maybe have Drager transfer back to the school for his senior year.these three could compete for supremesy on the feild and you could show Micks struggle to stay clean and do it the right way with out steroids. Also what are the odds of gym candy being made into a movie? GOOD PLOT--I'LL FILE IT FOR ANOTHER DAY. MY OTHER SEQUEL IDEA WAS TO HAVE MICK SWITCH TO SAFETY. NOT SO GLAMOROUS, BUT A GOOD PLACE FOR A HARD-NOSED FOOTBALL PLAYER. THEN HE COULD BE A STANDOUT, ETC, WITHOUT CHEATING.

Mr. Dueker, I have a few questions about the book Painting the Black. Who was Josh's partner when they asulted Monica Roby? Why didn't Josh tell anyone who it was? YOU NEVER LEARN IN THE BOOK. JOSH DOESN'T TELL BECAUSE IT WAS HIS PLAN AND HE DOESN'T WANT TO GET THE OTHER KID IN TROUBLE. WHAT DO YOU THINK--SHOULD HE HAVE TOLD?

Hello my question is about the book Runner. I read it and enjoyed it but I have a project and could use a little help. It's a CD project which is pick 10 songs that symbolize the characters and theme of the book. If you had any songs in mind I would appreciate it very much. SURE. TINY DANCER BY ELTON JOHN FOR SURE. YOU GOT THE SILVER BY THE ROLLING STONES WAS THE OTHER SONG I CONSIDERED FOR CHANCE'S FATHER AND MOTHER TO SHARE. DYLAN: HARD RAIN'S GONNA FALL FOR CHANCE'S FATHER. HELPLESS, HELPLESS AND SEE THE CLOUD BY NEIL YOUNG. I LISTENED TO NEIL YOUNG, THE BAND, AND THE ROLLING STONES A LOT AS I WROTE RUNNER.

What I meant to say was what are 2 themes in the book Payback Time?
THEMES OKAY--THE KILLING OF THE HERON SYMBOLIZES THE STUPIDITY OF EVIL. IT'S THERE; EVIL THINGS HAPPEN; THEY'RE HORRIBLE. MITCH'S ATTEMPT TO GET IN SHAPE IS A SYMBOL FOR HIS AMBITION, HIS DESIRE TO MAKE SOMETHING OF HIMSELF, TO BECOME SOMETHING OTHER THAN "MITCH". AT THE END, WHEN HE RECEIVES THE COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE WRITTEN TO "DANIEL," THAT SYMBOLIZES THAT HE HAS SUCCEEDED.

Mr. Deuker you are my favorite author. I have 2 questions, why do you always have your characters in seatle, I know you live there but I thought there might be another reason. And how come you never right sequals, the book I thought you should have wrote a sequal for was Gym Candy. I'M MORE COMFORTABLE WRITING ABOUT SETTINGS I CAN GO SEE. IT HELPS ME VISUALIZE MY CHARACTERS. I'M AFRAID I'LL RUIN A GOOD BOOK BY TRYING FOR A SEQUEL.

My name is Brandon i Love your books keep up the good work:) THANKS BRANDON

Can you tell me 5 good lit elements in the book gym candy plz? :)
I'M NOT SURE I UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION ENTIRELY. I PUT A FEW SYMBOLS DOWN BELOW--I BET YOU'RE IN THE SAME CLASS AS THE OTHER PERSON WHO WROTE THE QUESTION. HOW ABOUT STYLE: IT'S VERY PLAIN, UNADORNED TO MATCH CHANCE'S VIEW OF LIFE. NO COMPLICATED METAPHORS.
THE INCIDENT WHERE HE PUSHES DOWN THE HOMELESS GUY AND THEN GOES BACK TO HELP HIM MIRRORS HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS FATHER. PART FRUSTRATION/PART CONCERN. THE ARMED FORCES AND ITS APPEAL SHOWS HIS DESIRE TO MAKE SOMETHING OF HIMSELF.

wat is the setting on high heat SEATTLE, MODERN TIMES,

i was wandering if u could please give me a short list of symbols in the book "Runner"
TINY DANCER (THE BOAT)--FREEDOM
CHANCE'S RUNNING--AVOIDING RESPONSIBILITY
MELISSA'S HOUSE--THE WORLD CLOSED TO CHANCE

Hello my name is Felicia Garza and I as well as my friend wanted to ask you a question. What inspired you to write "GYM CANDY" because all though I am a girl I LOVED that book Please and Thank You, Students from San Juan Middle School at Texas. GYM CANDY CAME FROM THE NEWSPAPERS. SPECIFICALLY, A YOUNG BASEBALL PLAYER COMMITTED SUICIDE WHILE USING STEROIDS. PARENTS BELIEVED THAT STEROIDS PLAYED A BIG PART IN HIS DEPRESSION. THAT GOT ME RESEARCHING STEROIDS AND WRITING THE BOOK. THANKS FOR READING MY BOOK, FELICIA. YOU MIGHT TRY RUNNER--I THINK YOU'D LIKE IT.

Have you ever had a critic say your one of the best authors? If i was a critic I would say your the best author of all time!!! THANK YOU. THAT'S A GREAT COMPLIMENT, AND IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

Could you maybe send me an autographed copy of Payback Time by any chance, because I own all your books except Heart of a Champion and i'm having a hard time getting the book. Thanks! :) -Andrew Pulvirent my e-mail is apulvirent@yahoo.com I'LL SEND YOU AN EMAIL--UNFORTUNATELY CAN'T SEND BOOKS OUT. WRITERS HAVE TO BUY THEM JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. WE GET 10 FREE COPIES, AND THEY GO TO FAMILY MEMBERS.

When are you going to write your next book, i love ALL of your books and especially Payback Time and i would really like to see a sequel to Gym Candy, it was a great book and I think that there has to be a sequel to it, I also see many people asking for it and maybe you should give it a try. I also really liked the Chance Taylor reference in the book Gym Candy, maybe you should do something like that in the next book you write, and I know if you write a sequel they would most likely be out of stock on the first day. Me and my friends and alot of people in my school love your books, i'm still trying to get the book Heart of a Champion out of the school library but it's so popular. I would really like sequels to Gym Candy, Payback time, and High Heat. -one of Your BIGGEST fans, Andrew Pulvirent THANKS ANDREW, I CAN TELL YOU'VE READ SOME OF THE REQUESTS ON THE WEBSITE. AGAIN, I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL A GOOD BOOK BY WRITING A LOUSY SEQUEL. A PERSONAL FEAR.

whats something INTERESTING ABOUT YOU!!!!!!mr.Duretyy

whats something INTERESTING ABOUT YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BASICALLY, I LIVE A PRETTY BORING LIFE. I TEACH, I RUN, I PLAY GOLF, I WRITE. THE MOST INTERESTING THING IS THAT I HAVE AN AMAZING DAUGHTER WHO GRADUATES FROM COLLEGE IN JUNE.

What happens to the people after gym candy?why did you not write a 2 one? I GET ASKED THIS ALL THE TIME. BASICALLY, I'M AFRAID I'D RUIN THE FIRST BOOK IF I WROTE A CRUMMY SEQUEL. I'M ALSO NOT INTERESTED SO MUCH IN "ENDINGS." LIFE IS A PROCESS--THING
