FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Runner has been translated into Portugese and is available in Brazil.

ARE YOU GOING TO WRITE SEQUELS TO ANY OF YOUR BOOKS?

Probably not. I appreciate the fact that readers ask for sequels. It's a great compliment. But I've found that most sequels aren't as good as the original, and I've also found that reading a bad sequel somehow spoils the first book. So unless a really strong idea comes to me, I'm going to shy away from sequels.

When did you start writing?

When I was in high school, a friend and I would sit in the back of English class and write poems and songs in the style of Bob Dylan. We'd pass these back and forth to one another, careful to avoid the eye of our teacher. No writing in English class back then! It was the lyrics of Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Leonard Cohen that got me going with words.

The Greatest!

Where do you get ideas?

The plot for On the Devil's Court came from Dr. Faustus, which is mentioned in the book. Heart of a Champion comes from events in my own life, as does Painting the Black. With Night Hoops, I took a sad event in my life -- I had a student involved in a fatal shooting on the Burke Gilman trail -- and made a sad story in real life come out better in fiction. High Heat--I was beaned when I was in 8th grade. I was never the player that Reese was, but after being knocked unconscious I was no player at all. Runner came to life after the events of 9/11. The horrors of terrorism were on my mind; I wanted to write about it somehow but didn't know much, so I came up with a plot that involves terrorism through disengagement. Gym Candy is about steroids and sports: the idea came straight from the headlines.

Is there going to bed a second book I AM GUESSING THAT YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT GYM CANDY, BUT THE ANSWER GOES FOR ALL MY BOOKS. I'D HATE TO RUIN A GOOD BOOK WITH A BAD SEQUEL. SO, UNLESS I GET A REALLY GOOD IDEA, I WON'T WRITE A SECOND BOOK.

Our names are Dalton, Dawson, and Brandon. We have read "Gym Candy" and really liked it. However, we are very curious to what happens next. Are you planning to write a sequel to the book? We are all anxious to see if you had something in the works. Thank you.

Hello Gentlemen,

Thanks for reading Gym Candy. I know it sort of ends with less than a conclusive ending, but that's actually how addiction/drug use works in life. People are never "cured." I'm sure you've followed the various athletes who get suspended for drug use, come back, and then get suspended again later. So I didn't want to have a phony happy ending that made it seem as if Mick is all better.

Sequel . . . If I get a good idea for a sequel, I'll definitely write it. Here's what I've knocked around. Mick returns next year as a defensive player -- maybe middle linebacker. He stays under the radar, but his team does well. Then, for some reason I haven't figured out and is why I haven't started the book, he is accused/suspected of being back on PED's. So, second year he is innocent but is suspected and (because of his past) basically assumed to be guilty.

Maybe someday.

Thanks again and keep reading.

(If you like football books, you might give either Gutless of Payback Time a try.)

Who/ What is the antagonist in High Heat? THAT'S AN INTERESTING QUESTION. I GUESS REESE, THOUGH I SUPPOSE THE TRUTH THAT SHANE FINALLY LEARNS IS THAT REESE ISN'T HIS ANTAGONIST, THAT HIS TRUE ANTAGONIST IS HIMSELF, THAT HE HAS TO COME TO GRIPS WITH HIS FATHER'S DEATH (AND LIFE), AND THAT HE HAS TO MOVE ON FROM HIS HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE.

Hello Mr. Deuker my name is Michelle and I was just wondering what is the theme of you book Gutless. I was also wondering what is the tone of the book also.

HELLO MICHELLE. THESE ARE TOUGH QUESTIONS FOR AN AUTHOR TO ANSWER BECAUSE IT'S SO RESTRICTIVE. THEME, I GUESS, IS THAT HOW THINGS LOOK (BROCK & RICHIE SEEM TO HAVE PRETTY NORMAL HOMES) DOESN'T ALWAYS REFLECT HOW THINGS ARE. ALSO . . . BE KIND AND ACCEPTING OF ONE ANOTHER. TONE IS BASICALLY DARK, BUT WITH SOME GLIMMERS OF HOPE AT THE END. RICHIE SEEMS TO BE OKAY IN CHINA; BROCK IS LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING AGAIN NEXT YEAR.

what was the bad thing that happened to levi in swagger? WELL, I DON'T WANT TO GIVE AWAY THE PLOT OF THE BOOK TO OTHER READERS . . . HOW ABOUT IF I JUST SAY THAT HE ABUSES HIS POWER AS A COACH.

did jonas report coach hartwell
YES, BUT NOT AS SOON AS HE SHOULD HAVE.

Dear Mr. Deuker,

Hello Mr. Deuker my name is Eli and I finished your book GUTLESS and it was indescribable. I learned many things about myself while I read your book. I have found out that I am more of a caring person than I thought I was. After I got done reading your book I was sad but also happy. I was sad it was over but I was also happy because it was such a great book.

Writing doesn’t just come out of the hate for most people and doesn’t for me. When I read the book I felt like I was in their shoes at certain times in the book. The way you wrote the book was unique and I wish more people wrote like you. The ending of the book really shocked me because the story was going and going then BAM! Just like that you made the story even more interesting. Then I realized I was getting to the end and I was getting mad at myself for reading the book so fast. I’ve wondered and I thought, what got you into writing books? What is the way you write your books? If you do, when do you plan on writing your next book or books.?

Sincerely Eli R.
THANK YOU, ELI, FOR THE KIND WORDS AND FOR READING THE BOOKS. I ALWAYS LIKED TO TELL STORIES, SO WRITING WAS A NATURAL NEXT STEP. I WRITE IN A "LOOPING" FASHION. I'LL WRITE 50 PAGES FAST, THEN GO BACK AND CLEAN THAT UP AND WRITE OUT TO PAGE 80 OR SO, THEN GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING AND CLEAN IT ALL UP, ETC. I'M WORKING ON A BOOK I'M CALLING GOLDEN ARM RIGHT NOW. I'M CLOSING IN ON THE CLIMAX TO THE STORY.

I really liked the book Gutless, and it ad a huge twist at the end. But will there be a sequel for gutless? IF I GET A REALLY GOOD IDEA, THEN THERE WILL BE. I DON'T WANT TO WRITE A SEQUEL JUST FOR THE SAKE OF WRITING A SEQUEL.

Will there be a sequel to Gutless? IF I GET A REALLY GOOD IDEA FOR A SEQUEL, THEN YES. BUT I DON'T WANT TO WRITE A LOUSY SEQUEL THAT SPOILS THE FIRST STORY. THANKS FOR READING THE BOO.

The Runner. This book is amazing and i love and hate how the ending went but this book needs to tell us what happens next in chance life
GLAD YOU LIKED IT. IF I GET A REALLY GOOD IDEA FOR A SEQUEL (HAS TO BE A THRILLER OF SOME SORT) THEN I'LL GET GOING ON IT. I DON'T WANT TO RUIN RUNNER BY WRITING A LOUSY SEQUEL.

1. On page 170 in Swagger Jonas flashes back to seeing a speeding Lamborghini or Ferrari.... Is this the same car that was used in Heart of a Champion when Seth and Jimmy left the wedding? In other words, did Jonas come in contact with Seth? NO, BUT THAT IS VERY OBSERVANT OF YOU. WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT MY IMAGINATION RETURNED TO THE SAME IMAGE IN BOTH BOOKS, THOUGH I DID NOT KNOW IT.

2. In the book Swagger, after Jonas confronts coach Hartwell in chapter fourteen it comes to a close by saying they all smiled in the team picture. In the specific copy of the book I read, Chapters 7-14 were reprinted word for word after the ending. Is this intentional or just a copying error? THAT'S A PRINTING ERROR. HOW WEIRD!

Hi Mr. Deuker, how long on average does it take you write a book on average? IT TAKES ME FROM 2.5 TO 3.0 YEARS FROM BEGINNING TO END. I'M NOT FAST AND IT DOES NOT COME EASILY FOR ME.

Mr. Deuker, I just finished reading GUTLESS. I've read every one of your novels and have been a fan since I was 13 I am 41 now. I'm sitting here with goosebumps on my arms after reading it because it was so spectacular! I only wish I lived near Seattle so that I might arrange to have the book autographed! Thank you sir for your contributions to the literary world. I do believe however this was the best book you have ever written and I didn't think anything would ever beat ON THE DEVILS COURT. To those who haven't read it yet....get it, read it, and enjoy. Thanks again.....Clint S., Alabama
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WONDERFUL TO HEAR--AN AUTHOR'S DREAM. I'D BE GLAD TO SEND ALONG AN AUTOGRAPHED BOOK PLATE THAT YOU COULD PUT IN YOUR BOOK. JUST USE THE EMAIL LINK AND SEND ME YOUR ADDRESS.

What is the rising action? I'M GUESSING YOU ARE THINKING OF A PARTICULAR BOOK, BUT YOU DON'T TELL ME WHICH BOOK.

Is there a place for teachers and librarians to purchase large posters for library/ classroom display? SORRY, NOT THAT I KNOW OF.

How tall is joe faust JOE IS A LITTLE OVER 6'0.

What are the 2 high schools that Shane goes to? SHORELAKE IS THE "RICH" SCHOOL WHERE HE STARTS. LATER HE TRANSFERS TO WHITMAN.

Hello Mr. Deuker. I was just wondering what is the name of mick's mom in your book "Gym Candy"? EMBARRASSED TO SAY . . . I DON'T KNOW. AFTER I FINISH A BOOK, I NEVER REREAD IT. I JUST PUT IT OUT IN THE WORLD TO MAKE ITS WAY. IT HAS BEEN YEARS SINCE I WROTE THE BOOK. IT'S POSSIBLE THAT HER NAME IS NEVER GIVEN. SINCE MICK TELLS THE STORY, HE WOULD ALWAYS CALL HER "MOM." HIS FATHER MAY USE HER NAME, THOUGH.

Why didn't Jonas fight Hartwell in Swagger? I really wanted Hartwell to get killed, and why didn't you have romance with Rachel and Jonas? THE ROMANCE PART IS PRETTY SIMPLE--I TRY TO MAKE SURE MY BOOKS MOVE QUICKLY. A WHOLE ROMANCE WOULD TAKE PAGES AND SLOW DOWN THE MAIN STORY. AS TO A FIGHT . . . I CONSIDERED HAVING JONAS TAKE A SWING AT HARTWELL WHEN THEY MEET AFTERWARDS, AND I PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE DONE IT. HARTWELL WOULD HAVE EASILY OVERPOWERED JONAS, BUT IT WOULD HAVE SHOWN THE RAGE JONAS FEELS.

i want to send letter to carl deuker how will i send it RIGHT ABOVE THIS TEXT BOOK IS A LINK THAT READS: EMAIL CARL DEUKER. CLICK ON IT AND IT SHOULD BRING UP MY EMAIL ADDRESS. IF NOT, cdeuker@gmail.com SEND ME AN EMAIL AND I'LL GIVE YOU A POSTAL ADDRESS.

what is chance dad name THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION. I HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK IN YEARS, BUT I'M GUESSING IT COMES UP IN THE EARLY CHAPTERS OR IT MIGHT COME UP AGAIN WHEN MELISSA'S FATHER TALKS ABOUT HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH CHASES'S DAD. I'LL POKE THROUGH THE BOOK A LITTLE AND SEE IF I CAN FIND IT. "CHASE'S DAD" WOULD PROBABLY WORK OKAY ON A BOOK REPORT, THOUGH.

I am a Read 180 teacher and I have students reading Swagger. I am needing a 10 question test over the book to enter in my program for them to take. Do you have a quiz over this book.
I DO NOT. IN THE PAST, ACCELERATED READER HAS COME UP WITH TESTS FOR MY BOOKS.
Why do your stories all have an unfinished feeling at the end? I WRITE STORIES ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT IN LIFE. THEY ARE MAJOR EVENTS THAT LAUNCH THEM FORWARD, SO THEY DON'T HAVE A "THE END" FEEL TO THEM.

Hi my name is Rebecca and I'm in the middle of "On The Devil's Court." I'm at the part where Joseph and the team just won their second game and his mom buys grapes from India. Why did he get flushed and embarrassed about it? EARLIER, HIDDEN AWAY, DR. FAUSTUS IN THE PLAY WASTES THE DEVIL'S POWER BY DOING STUPID THINGS LIKE GETTING GRAPES FROM INDIA. HE FEELS A CONNECTION WITH THE CHARACTER IN THE PLAY.

What page does Levi get raped on? THAT OCCURS "OFF CAMERA" SO TO SPEAK. LEVI REPORTS WHAT HAPPENS, BUT THE SCENE ITSELF IS NOT DESCRIBED.

What are your opinions on writing down painful memories, and would you advise someone to incorporate such memories in works of fiction they are writing? Thanks, and a big fan of your work. YES, DEFINITELY INCORPORATE THOSE MEMORIES. NIGHT HOOPS, FOR EXAMPLE, IS BASED ON "REAL LIFE" EVENTS. I TOOK SOMETHING THAT TURNED OUT TERRIBLE IN LIFE, STAYED TRUE TO THE BASIC CHARACTERS, BUT THEN GAVE THEM THE ENDING THAT I WANTED FOR THEM BUT THAT THEY DIDN'T GET. SAME THING WITH HIGH HEAT. ONCE YOU START WORKING WITH THE MEMORIES, THEN YOU'RE STORY WILL SHOW YOU THE RIGHT WAY TO USE THEM. BUT THE PAINFUL STUFF IN LIFE MAKES FOR GOOD WRITING. BEST OF LUCK, AND THANKS FOR THE NICE WORDS.

Do you know where I could find personification in your book, Swagger? THANKS FOR THE EMAIL, I SENT YOU AN ANSWER. FYI FOR OTHERS WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED==NOT ALL WRITERS USE METAPHORS, PERSONIFICATION, SIMILES. ALTHOUGH IN SCHOOL, THESE ARE OFTEN PRESENTED AS SIGNS OF GOOD WRITING, I FIND THEM OFTEN TO BE ANNOYING/DISTRACTING. THEY TEND TO CALL ATTENTION TO THE WRITER AND SO TAKE ATTENTION AWAY FROM THE STORY. SO, ALL IN ALL, I AVOID THEM.

I was wondering if the "Fat Man" in your book Runner has an actual name?

Thanks!
BURDETT. I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY YOU HAVE TROUBLE WITH THIS, AS IT IS ONLY MENTIONED ONCE OR TWICE IN THE BOOK. I SHOULD HAVE MADE HIS NAME MORE CLEAR.

Your book was very inspiring to me, but I have a question. what exactly is the main theme to Swagger? There are so many important themes to me. I also know that you are not to fund too making sequels of your books by your comments. It seems as if you are a very hyper person by what you reply back to people. I already understand why you use capitals, but it still seems like you are very hyper. Another question, it seems as if you find the darkest and most depressing way to end a story and also with a cliff hanger, why is that? do find it amusing to play with a readers feelings before you end the book? Or is it to make the reader have a realization of reality and its extremely harsh outcomes? You are my favorite author because you always intrigue me with your drastically over realistic writing style. I hope you write back I already observed that you are a busy man and your creating a new book as I speak. Please after that make another Book about Basketball. Except its about a Freshman who is a measly unknown basketball player who is not recognized. He gets better until the point where he is the starter for his basketball team. But instead of getting caught in drugs, he gets caught in sex and let all the fame get to him and boom now he has a kid which changes his life. its just an idea you probably would not take it as a book idea but I would deeply appreciate if you took it into consideration. Now this is my real farewell.
Sincerely your reader,
Michael W. A.K.A Jammal Hopkins HELLO MICHAEL AKA JAMMAL, THANKS FOR WRITING. THERE'S A LOT IN YOUR LETTER, BUT I'LL DO MY BEST. BASIC THEME OF SWAGGER IS THAT THERE IS EVIL IN THE WORLD, AND IT IS NOT ALWAYS (OR EVEN USUALLY) EASY TO RECOGNIZE. AM I HYPER--NOT AT ALL. WRITING ISN'T A TASK FOR ME, AND I FIGURE THAT IF YOU SPEND THREE OR FOUR HOURS OF YOUR LIFE READING ONE OF MY BOOKS, THEN THE LEAST I CAN DO IS TO ANSWER LETTERS AND QUESTIONS. IT WOULD BE RUDE NOT TO REPLY. HARSH OUTCOMES? YEAH, I GUESS THAT'S TRUE. MY BOOKS ARE FOR TEENAGERS MAINLY, AND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BOOK FOR TEENAGERS AND FOR YOUNGER KIDS IS THAT TEENAGERS DON'T WANT TO BE TOLD THAT THE WORLD IS ALL CANDY AND SUNSHINE, SO I DON'T. I LIKE YOUR PLOT A LOT. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I'VE TOYED WITH A BASEBALL STORY IN WHICH AN ATHLETE GETS HIS GIRLFRIEND PREGNANT AND THEN GETS A CALL FROM A COLLEGE OR A PRO TEAM. IT'S A GOOD STORY--LOTS OF CONFLICT. "GUTLESS" WHICH COMES OUT IN SEPTEMBER IS A FOOTBALL STORY. MY BASEBALL STORIES ARE "HEART OF A CHAMPION," "PAINTING THE BLACK," AND "HIGH HEAT." THANKS FOR WRITING AND KEEP READING. CARL

Hello Mr. Deuker.
I have a question.
Why did you write 'Painting the black'? I TAUGHT AT A SCHOOL WHERE A VERY ATHLETIC, VERY AGGRESSIVE MALE ATHLETE HAD VARIOUS CONFRONTATIONS WITH AN EQUALLY AGGRESSIVE FEMALE INTELLECTUAL. THE INCIDENTS IN THE BOOK PARALLEL WHAT HAPPENED AT THE SCHOOL. WRITERS ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR STRONG CHARACTERS AND CONFLICTS, AND THROUGH THE (UNHAPPY) EXPERIENCES IN THE CLASSROOM, I HAD BOTH. PAINTING THE BLACK IS THE FICTIONAL VERSION OF REAL EVENTS.

Hi Mr. Deuker I have a question for a reading assignment. Which character change most from the beginning to the end of the book, Swagger? -Kevin
FOR THE READER, HARTWELL. IN THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK HE APPEARS TO BE A GREAT GUY, INTERESTED IN HELPING OUT, AN EXCELLENT COACH, ETC. BY THE END OF THE BOOK--QUITE DIFFERENT. THIS IS FOR THE READER WHO DOESN'T KNOW HARTWELL'S TRUE NATURE. AS FOR THE CHARACTERS, JONAS DOLAN MAKES THE BIGGEST INTERNAL CHANGE. HE'S SELF-CENTERED AND PRETTY SHALLOW IN THE BEGINNING. HE CARES ABOUT HIMSELF AND BASKETBALL. BY THE END, HE REALIZES THAT THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS--FOR EXAMPLE, STANDING UP TO EVIL BY SPEAKING THE TRUTH. SO HE CHANGES THE MOST AS A PERSON.
Hey Mr. Deuker i just read your book high heat and was wondering what all of the different themes were and how they all came together to help you with this book MAJORTHEMES ARE 1) FACING ADVERSITY 2) TAKING RESPONSIBILITY -- SO OUR MAIN CHARACTER, WHEN HIS LIFE FALLS APART, DOESN'T (AT FIRST) HANDLE THE ADVERSITY WELL. ARRESTED FOR DRINKING, HITTING REESE ON PURPOSE. BUT, AS THE NOVEL PROGRESSES, HE DOES TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT HE DID TO REESE, AND THAT MAKES IT LIKELY THAT HE'LL HANDLE ADVERSITY BETTER IN THE FUTURE. AT LEAST THAT'S HOW I SEE IT.

Hey Mr. Deuker,
Its Peter again and Im gonna take your advice on the short stories instead of trying to write an entire novel on my first crack at it.I decided the plot is loosely going to be about a very egotistical and conceited 2 sport high school athlete who through a series of traumatic events, is forced to quit sports and leave his entire group of friends, only to find ultimate redemption and clarity by reinventing his outlook on life by the time he graduates. I was just wondering, what elements can I use to create a more sympathetic character out of the guy during his downfall as opposed to the the reader constantly rooting against him since I plan of painting him out to be a pretty bad human being before his downfall.

HEY, PETER, GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU. HERE'S WHAT I'D SAY--TALENT BY ITSELF MAKES A PERSON LIKEABLE. SO, IF YOU DO A GOOD JOB OF DESCRIBING HOW GREAT A PLAYER HE IS, YOUR READERS WILL ROOT FOR HIM. FOR EXAMPLE, MAKE HIM UNSELFISH ON THE FIELD OR COURT. GOOD PASSER, HUSTLES, ETC. IF YOU DO THAT, THEN NO MATTER HOW AWFUL HE IS OFF THE COURT/FIELD, YOUR READER WILL ROOT FOR HIM TO LEARN HOW TO BEHAVE PROPERLY EVERYWHERE. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks as always! HELLO PETER, YOU'RE ON TO SOMETHING--IF YOUR MAIN CHARACTER IS JUST AWFUL, NO ONE WANTS TO FOLLOW HIM. SO . . . GREAT ATHLETIC SKILL GIVES A PERSON A CERTAIN CHARISMA. THERE IS A BEAUTY IN PLAYING A SPORT WELL, EVEN WHEN THE PLAYER IS A JERK. ONE THOUGHT--MAKE HIM DEDICATED TO THE SPORTS. PRACTICES ALL THE TIME, STAYS FIT, PLAYS THE GAMES THE RIGHT WAY ON THE FIELD (ASSISTS IN BASKETBALL, RUNNING OUT THE PLAYS IN BASEBALL). THEN, OFF THE FIELD, MAKE HIM A JERK. JUST A THOUGHT--IF IT DOESN'T RING TRUE TO YOU, DON'T USE IT. GOOD LUCK.

Is there a sequel to gym candy?THERE IS NOT. IF I EVER GET A GOOD IDEA, I'LL WRITE A SEQUEL, BUT UNTIL THEN YOU HAVE TO LET YOUR OWN IMAGINATION FOLLOW MICK OUT.

I incidentally wrote something in capital letters. Sorry, I'm just... enthusiastic! NO PROBLEM. ENTHUSIASM ALWAYS APPRECIATED.

Mr. Carl Deuker, as it is my creative right to read a book and provide feedback based off of that book, I feel that you should think about the greater amount of witnesses there are to your work. Voluntary or not, I do not want to read about a thoroughly depressed, drugged up kid, who is trying to win at sports. I want to read a book that about video games. I know there are probably plenty of them out there... but in the way your book was bad, it was also really good. Your book showed every last thing that would make a cheater justify their cheating. Mick didn't need steroids he just needed to co-operate with his team. Also, I’m not just doing this for me, but if you did this Carl… you would be doing a lot for all of the people considering playing video games for a living or being a video game developer. You can write great things, but not about sports. No-one can do that, (myself included) because I hate sports. Anywho Mr. Deuker have an amazing day. (AND AN AMAZING LIFE!) OKAY, THANKS FOR WRITING. IF I KNEW MORE ABOUT VIDEO GAMES, I'D WRITE A BOOK AROUND THEM. MAYBE YOU COULD WRITE ONE. AND THANKS FOR HANGING WITH GYM CANDY TO THE END EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE NOT A SPORTS FAN. I APPRECIATE IT.

Where do u live
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, IN THE BALLARD AREA, VERY NEAR PUGET SOUND AND THE BALLARD LOCKS
Hey Mr. Deuker,

Its Peter again and I am starting or atleast attempting to write several fiction books to express myself.I have all these creative and set ideas of where I want the story to go but always end up not knowing where to proceed after the "first chapter" pertaining to connecting and tying up lose ends with all the characters and lengthening the word count for continuity. Ive tried to follow my english class format of exposition, rising action, etc...but end up feeling lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated. FIRST OF ALL, STOPPING WHEN IT STARTS TO FALL APART IS A GOOD IDEA, NOT A BAD ONE. THE WORST THING A WRITER CAN DO IS TO KEEP GOING IF IT FEELS WRONG. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED WRITING SHORT STORIES INSTEAD OF NOVELS? ONE WAY MIGHT BE TO THINK OF A MAIN CHARACTER, THEN WRITE DIFFERENT STORIES IN WHICH THAT MAIN CHARACTER PLAYS A PART. THAT TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF TRYING TO HOLD A NOVEL TOGETHER, BUT ALLOWS YOU TO KEEP THINKING OF ONE SETTING AND ONE CHARACTER. HEMINGWAY DID THIS WITH "NICK," A CHARACTER HE USED IN MANY STORIES, AND HEMINGWAY IS ONE OF THE GREATEST TO EVER LIVE. IF HE DID IT, YOU CAN DO IT! BEST OF LUCK.

Do you go to church or ever write about God? NOT A CHURCH-GOER. THE BOOK "ON THE DEVIL'S COURT" HAS A RELIGIOUS PLOT OF SORTS, AND LEVI IN "SWAGGER" IS VERY RELIGIOUS.

When will golden arm be released? I'M JUST IN THE FIRST DRAFT RIGHT NOW. NOT BEING A FAST WRITER, IF ALL GOES WELL, IT WILL PROBABLY BE PUBLISHED IN 2018. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW WITH WRITING. EVERY TIME I FINISH A BOOK, I'M SURPRISED THAT I ACTUALLY MANAGED TO DO IT, SO WISH ME LUCK!

Can you please make another book like gym candy but it doesn't have to be about football but it can be about basketball or track and field? THE BOOK I'M WORKING ON RIGHT NOW, WHICH I'M CALLING GOLDEN ARM, WILL HAVE SOME SIMILARITIES TO GYM CANDY. BASEBALL STORY, THOUGH

Does Swagger have a sequel? THERE IS NO SEQUEL FOR SWAGGER. I'M NOT REALLY FOND OF SEQUELS. WHEN I FINISH A BOOK, I LIKE TO START SOMETHING BRAND NEW.

I'm a boy scout and have to write to my favorite authour and its you but my question would be how many more books do you plan on writing? and also thank you for all your books, i love them. I'M GLAD YOU HAVE ENJOYED THE BOOKS. I PLAN ON WRITING UNTIL THE PUBLISHER TELLS ME MY BOOKS AREN'T ANY GOOD. HOPEFULLY A BOOK EVERY TWO OR THREE YEARS.

who is favorite author other then yourself THAT CHANGES ALL THE TIME, BASED ON THE BOOK THAT MOST RECENTLY HAS CAPTURED ME. SO FOR YA RIGHT NOW, IT'S SHERMAN ALEXIE. I JUST REREAD "THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN," AND THERE WERE WHOLE SECTIONS OF THAT BOOK THAT I FOUND EXTREMELY MOVING AND RANG COMPLETELY TRUE.

Its to bad that there is not continuation of the runner i'm Canadian and am looking to join the Canadian Armed Forces i wish to find out how his future played out as you think it would have TYLER, IT'S A GREAT COMPLIMENT THAT YOU'D LIKE A SEQUEL TO RUNNER. IF I COULD COME UP WITH A GOOD IDEA, I'D WRITE ONE. BUT I NEED IT TO HAVE SOME MYSTERY TO IT, AS A SEQUEL NEEDS TO BE IN THE SAME GENRE. I JUST HAVEN'T COME UP WITH A GOOD PLOT. JOINING THE SERVICE WILL GIVE YOU GREAT EXPERIENCE--AND IT IS EXACTLY THAT, SERVICE TO YOUR COUNTRY.

how do u get your ideas for writing a book? THEY COME FROM EVERYWHERE. RUNNER CAME FROM WORLD EVENTS; GYM CANDY CAME FROM A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE; PAINTING THE BLACK CAME FROM AN EVENT AT A SCHOOL WHERE I TAUGHT. I JUST TRY TO KEEP MY MIND OPEN TO SITUATIONS THAT WOULD MAKE GOOD STORIES.

what encouraged you to write the runner does any of the story and its plot affect you or was this a story just thought up by you. Thanks a lot Tyler I STARTED RUNNER RIGHT AFTER THE ATTACKS ON 9/11/2001. I WAS WRITING GYM CANDY, AND A SPORTS BOOK SEEMED SILLY. I WANTED TO WRITE A BOOK THAT WOULD BRING SOME AWARENESS OF THE THREATENING NATURE OF THE WORLD TO YOUNG ADULTS. AFTER I FINISHED RUNNER, I WENT BACK TO GYM CANDY AND THAT STORY NO LONGER SEEMED SILLY.

Mr.Deuker,
Hi, this is Peter again and although I dont really have a question, I just wanted to thank you for having your work have a profound impact on me. When I was on the JV team freshman year, we scrimmaged the varsity and I got so exposed and traumatized if front of all the coaches, that I ended up quitting a game that id been playing since I was 5. When I read night hoops, and swagger, It brought back a lot of memories and sort of lit that competitive fire inside me once again and after finishing high heat yesterday and realizing one bad incident in the past doesnt have to haunt me anymore, Ive decided im gonna make another crack at it with aau basketball. Thank you so much and im looking foreward to your new book...peace
HELLO PETER, THANKS FOR WRITING AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR AAU TEAM. I HAD SOME MISERABLE TIMES IN HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. WHEN I WENT TO COLLEGE, I SIGNED UP FOR INTRAMURAL SPORTS AND ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. NO COACHES, NO PARENTS WATCHING, NO CLASSMATES WATCHING. IN FACT, NOBODY WATCHING! JUST THE GAMES. AND IT TURNED OUT I WASN'T SUCH A BAD PLAYER. IT WAS THE BEST TIME OF MY SPORTS "CAREER," SO TO SPEAK.

obama

Hey this is benjamin again do you think that you could get a professional movie producer to make a movie on gym candy IT WOULD BE WORTH LOTS
BENJAMIN, I'M ALL FOR IT, TOO. EVERYONE ONCE IN AWHILE I GET A CALL FROM SOMEONE INTERESTED IN MOVIE RIGHTS, BUT NOTHING HAS EVER GONE BEYOND A PHONE CALL OR TWO.

What is the diameter of the sun through Jimmy's eyes in Heart of a Champion? Please, back your answer up with philosophical, scientific, somewhat theoretical evidence. THAT'S A TOUGH ONE. DIAMETER IS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A QUARTER IF YOU HOLD IT AT ARM'S LENGTH. (THE QUARTER, NOT THE SUN.) I THINK YOU CAN FIGURE OUT HOW FAR AWAY THE SUN IS BY USING SOME NOT TO DIFFICULT ALGEBRA, BUT I CAN'T DO ALGEBRA PROBLEMS ON THIS PAGE.

Benjamin again did you ever get bullied or made fun of. SURE. I THINK IT'S ACTUALLY UNCOMMON TO NOT HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE, THOUGH THINGS ARE IMPROVING. AT LEAST NOW IF YOU REPORT IT, ADULTS TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY.

Carl Deuker not Jones I was thinking of Cardell Jones sorry benjamin THAT'S OKAY. I LIKE IT.

This is Benjamin again thanks Carl Jones are you working on another book right now YES, AS SOON AS I FINISH ONE I START ANOTHER.

Do u know Camille daquan and JOHN CEMA!!!!! NO, SADLY, I DO NOT.

Thanks Carl Deuker I will recommend this book to my friends this is Benjamin Also what inspired you to start writing stories like this obviously you have the imagination and you are smart but i want to know why you started writing also i never really read books and i just saw this one on the kindle and just thought that this was going to be one of those stories that i start to read and strongly dislike when i am reading i think about football and baseball that i dont want to read but in this case it is about football and that makes me want to read also i am always out doors riding all my four wheeler s i have three and the rest of my family only has one so we are always riding and this book just made me love reading just as much as riding thanks again Carl deuker HELLO AGAIN, BENJAMIN. I ALWAYS LIKED TO TELL STORIES, SO WRITING WAS A NATURAL TRANSITION. I DO TRY TO WRITE THE KIND OF BOOK I WOULD HAVE WANTED TO READ WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE. FAST-PACED STORY, LOTS OF SPORTS, SOMETHING MORE THAN SPORTS. IT'S GOOD TO BE OUTDOORS MOST OF THE TIME; IT'S NICE TO READ A BOOK WHEN YOU'RE INSIDE. LOTS OF PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY DON'T LIKE TO READ JUST HAVEN'T FOUND THE RIGHT BOOK.

i just read gym candy and i want to know what inspired you i am doing a project on you and i really want to know more about you my name is Benjamin
HELLO BENJAMIN. GYM CANDY WAS INSPIRED BY A STORY I READ IN THE NEWSPAPER ABOUT A HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PLAYER (AND STEROID USER) WHO KILLED HIMSELF. UNTIL I READ THAT, I DIDN'T THAT STEROIDS HAD MADE IT TO HIGH SCHOOL. STEROID USE IN HS IS RARE, BUT IT DOES HAPPEN. SO I USED THAT BOY'S SAD STORY AS A STARTING POINT. I SWITCHED THE SPORT TO FOOTBALL AND GOT TO WORK. I'M GLAD YOU LIKED IT.
I apologize I just read down the page and saw the answer to my question of when your new book comes out. I was however very serious about you still being my favorite author. I still re-read your novels over and over. My all time favorite is ON THE DEVILS COURT. Im sure you don't remember but you once sent me a book mark and some stickers that were autographed to but inside my book collection. I know you probably tire of suggestions but I would love to see a novel based in the south about high school football. NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE . . . THIS PAGE IS FOR QUESTIONS. GUTLESS HAS A CHARACTER WHO MOVES FROM THE SOUTH TO SEATTLE TO PLAY FOOTBALL. IT'S HARD FOR ME TO SET THE BOOK IN AN AREA I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH. I'M SURE TO MAKE MISTAKES ABOUT ROADS, WEATHER, SHOPS. MAYBE SOME DAY I WILL MOVE TO THE SOUTH. GLAD YOU LIKE ON THE DEVIL'S COURT. THAT WAS MY FIRST BOOK, SO IT IS A FAVORITE OF MINE, TOO. I NEVER THOUGHT I'D GET A BOOK PUBLISHED. JUST GOT SOME MORE BOOKMARKS PRINTED UP, SO I STILL SEND THEM OUT IF A LETTER COMES IN THE MAIL. NOT SO MANY OF THOSE ANYMORE.

when do you anticipate your new book to hit store shelves? I am eagerly awaiting it. I am old enough that I have read them all as they have came out!! Ha Ha, you remain my favorite author even now that I am in my forties. I'M SORT OF A GUILTY PLEASURE FOR ADULT MALES. JUST PRETEND YOU'RE PAGING THROUGH IT BEFORE YOU PASS IT ON TO . . . (:

why does a character always die in your books WELL, NOT ALWAYS. (-: BUT THE SHORT ANSWER IS THAT FICTION IS OFTEN "SUPERCHARGED" REALITY. SO, I JUST PUSH POSSIBLE OUTCOMES TO THE LIMIT, AND THAT OFTEN MEANS SOMEONE DIES. (WE ALL WANT TO HAVE HAPPY LIVES, BUT WE DON'T PARTICULARLY LIKE READING ABOUT HAPPY LIVES.)

I've been wondering: elmo or big bird which do you prefer DEFINITELY ELMO. SUCH A GREAT NAME. BUT BERT AND ERNIE ARE MY FAVORITES.

happy earth day darl ceuker
A LITTLE EARLY, BUT HAPPY DARTH EAY TO YOU, TOO!

What is the authors purpose for heart of a champion??? FIRST PURPOSE, ALWAYS, IS TO WRITE AN ENTERTAINING STORY. SECOND PURPOSE, THE THEME I SUPPOSE, IS THAT SOME PEOPLE MAKES MISTAKES AND NOTHING HAPPENS. OTHER PEOPLE MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE (JIMMY) AND PAY FOR IT. LIFE CAN BE CRUEL.

one of your biggest fans - Flavie THANK YOU.

would you ever write a book dealing with baseball-playing bunnies and umpires who are squirrels? Just a thought:home plate could be a shrub THE BALL COULD BE AN ACORN. SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD LITTLE KIDS' BOOK. FUN DRAWINGS. YOU SHOULD TRY IT. AS I MENTIONED LAST TIME YOU WROTE, I ALREADY HAVE ZILLIONS OF DOLLARS. :)

What is a Simile and Metaphor for Swagger
OKAY, PAGE 106 HAS A METAPHOR--A COMPARISON OF TWO "UNLIKE" THINGS WITHOUT USING THE WORDS "LIKE" OR "AS." JONAS USES THE METAPHOR TO DESCRIBE LEVI. THERE IS A SIMILE ON PAGE 64. AGAIN, JONAS IS BEING COMPARED TO SOMETHING, BUT THIS TIME THE WORD "LIKE" IS RIGHT THERE. .

What is a cause and effect for the book called High Heat. YIKES, SOUNDS LIKE SOME CLASS ASSIGNMENT. I'LL HELP. THE FASTBALL THAT HITS REESE IS A CAUSE. WHAT IS THE EFFECT.

Can you read english? YES

Don't you just love it when people troll your website? NO, BUT I'LL BE GLAD TO ANSWER ANY QUESTION YOU HAVE.

What is your net worth ZILLIONS

are you a papaya wizard NOT THAT I KNOW OF

Hello, my name is Niko. I really love all the books that I have read that are by you. I've been wondering, have you ever thought of making Gym Candy into a movie? MOVIE MAKING IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT CRAFT, SO IT WOULD TAKE A MOVIE MAKER TO DO THAT. I'M NOT GOOD WITH VISUAL ART AT ALL.

Hi mr deuker, I was wondering if u were going to write a sequel to gym candy. I loved that book and I would love a second 1 IF I COME UP WITH A GOOD IDEA, I CERTAINLY WILL, BUT I DON'T WANT TO WRITE A SEQUEL JUST TO WRITE A SEQUEL.

what is the narrative hook of Gym Candy? Please and thank you! THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION. THERE ARE A BUNCH THROUGHOUT THE BOOK TO ENCOURAGE CONTINUED READING. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT HOOK, I SUPPOSE, OCCURS WHEN MICK IS STOPPED SHORT OF THE GOAL BY THE LINEBACKER. MUCH OF WHAT HAPPENS AFTERWARDS TIES IN WITH THE HUMILIATION HE FELT THEN.

what is the plot of gutless GUTLESS WILL BE A FOOTBALL STORY ABOUT A PLAYER WHO HAS ALL THE TALENT (HANDS, SPEED, MOVES) TO BE A GREAT RECEIVER, BUT SHIES AWAY FROM PHYSICAL CONTACT--GUTLESS.

Was there a connection between the basketball leagues in both "Swagger" and "Night Hoops". Because you mentioned Garfield beating both teams in each book. MOST OF THE SCHOOLS ARE REAL SCHOOLS, BUT OFTEN THE SCHOOL OF THE MAIN CHARACTER IS FICTITIOUS. I DON'T ANYONE THINKING, 'I KNOW THAT PERSON."

when will gutless come out LOOKS LIKE SEPTEMBER OF 2016, TIMED WITH FOOTBALL SEASON

what did drew suggest that made mick get angry
I need and answer quickly I'M NOT SURE OF THE SCENE. BASICALLY, DREW WANTS MICK TO COME BACK TO REALITY.

My son loves your books, as do I. Thanks for providing great stories for him to read and learn from. Do you know when Gutless will be available? THANK YOU. IT'S PROBABLY COMING OUT IN SEPTEMBER OF 2016 AT THE BEGINNING OF FOOTBALL SEASON.

Why did Levi had to die? And are you going to make a Swagger 2 or something? ONE OF THE CONSTANT REFRAINS FROM ABUSE VICTIMS IS THAT THEY SAY THEY FILL THEIR LIFE ISN'T WORTH LIVING. THE POINT OF A BOOK IS TO HAVE AN IMPACT, SO . . . IF I COME UP WITH A GREAT IDEA FOR A SWAGGER 2, THEN YES, BUT I DON'T WANT TO WRITE A BAD SEQUEL TO A GOOD BOOK.

Hello, my name is Peter and I initially found out about your writing through "Heart of a Champion" I read it when I was around 10 and didnt really understand it...im 17 now and can relate on so many levels. I have also read Gym Candy,Swagger, and am starting on Night Hoops. The question I wanted to ask you is, How are you able to go into so much detail and have your characters be so relatable in each one of your books to young adults like myself? When I was reading swagger, there were times where I would get the same anxiety and sweaty palms as I did during tryouts last year because of your writing style I guess haha. Also, are the plots in some of your novels based on true stories, or are they fictional?.....Anyways, I just wanted to thank you for being one of the only authors who can actually get me looking forward to reading.

Best of luck, Peter
THANK YOU. I'M GLAD YOU WENT BACK TO HEART OF A CHAMPION. I GET LETTERS FOR THIRD AND FOURTH GRADERS TELLING ME HOW MUCH THEY LIKE A BOOK, AND I KEEP THINKING--WAIT A FEW YEARS, PLEASE. TO YOUR QUESTIONS. IDEAS COME FROM EVERYWHERE. THE NEWS, MY STUDENTS, THINGS THAT HAPPENED TO ME. I APPRECIATE THE COMMENT ABOUT THE STYLE. I GREW UP LISTENING TO GAMES WITH A RADIO STUCK IN MY EAR. RADIO ANNOUNCERS HAVE TO DESCRIBE MORE (AND WITH MORE EXCITEMENT) THAN TV ANNOUNCERS. THEY HELPED ME TREMENDOUSLY.

Hello My name is Joseph and i really liked your book Swagger and i have a question is there going to be a Sequal? IF I COME UP WITH A GOOD IDEA

I saw on good reads that read a book by drew bailey called more than a game. I read that too. what did you think of it? I LIKED IT. I THOUGHT THE "SWITCHEROO" WITH THE CAUSE OF THE INJURY WAS VERY COOL. IT'S MUCH BETTER THAN ANYTHING I WROTE WHEN I WAS DREW BAILEY'S AGE.

I loved book "Gym Candy" that you had wrote and I thought it was amazing. I'm in 8 grade and I'm trying to read all of your novels. THANK YOU. I HOPE YOU ENJOY THEM

why are you skilled at writing novels? IT'S A LOT OF WORK, AND I JUST ALWAYS ENJOYED STORIES, FROM AN EARLY AGE. I ALSO GOT LUCKY TO GET A BOOK PUBLISHED, AND IN THE REWRITING OF THAT BOOK--AND ALL THE OTHER BOOKS--I DEVELOPED A SKILL. IN OTHER WORDS, LOTS OF TIME AND EFFORT.

You are my favorite author. I was wondering when your next book will come out? THANKS. GUTLESS COMES OUT IN SEPTEMBER OF 2016

why did u decide to put the book payback time in first person FIRST PERSON IS VERY IMMEDIATE FOR THE READER. I WANT THE READER TO FORGET ABOUT ME ENTIRELY AND TO JUST FOCUS ON THE STORY.

Why do you like writing sports books? 1) I LIKE SPORTS. 2) I THINK SPORTS REVEALS CHARACTER. YOU PLAY A GAME WITH SOMEBODY, ANY GAME, AND YOU LEARN A LOT ABOUT THEM. DO THEY PLAY FAIR? CAN THEY CONTROL THEIR EMOTIONS? DO THEY KEEP TRYING EVEN WHEN THINGS ARE TOUGH? KEY THINGS.
*******************
what inspired you to write your book "gym candy" THAT ONE CAME FROM THE NEWSPAPERS. I READ THAT STEROID USE HAD REACHED INTO SOME HIGH SCHOOLS, AND I STARTED THINKING HOW SCARY THAT WAS . . . SO I WROTE A SOMEWHAT SCARY BOOK ABOUT IT.

Thank you for answering my questions. You don't know how excited I am right now. Creighton THANK YOU FOR READING MY BOOKS. ALWAYS GLAD TO ANSWER A QUESTION FROM A READER.

Oops, I forgot to ask as well, when Jimmy dies in Heart of a Champion, were you inferring to us that Jimmy was drunk? I was unable to tell because Jimmy said that he had quit drinking and even turned down an invitation to go drink with his friends on the team. Once again your newest fan, Creighton YES, HE WAS DRUNK. A LOT OF PEOPLE "QUIT DRINKING" BUT THEN CAN'T WIN THE BATTLE DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY. THAT'S WHY ALCOHOL MUST BE TREATED WITH GREAT RESPECT AND CAUTION.

You have very quickly become my favorite author. I loved your book Heart of a Champion, because in some ways I can relate to it (not the drinking part lol) but in the way that Jimmy gives his all and has dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. I have just a few questions, how do you come up with the ideas for these books? Are you going to make a sequel to Heart of a Champion? And I have one comment, I think its great that you have a website where you talk to your fans. Your newest fan, Creighton
I hope this isn't to long. NOT TOO LONG AT ALL, AND I'M SORRY THAT I HAVEN'T CHECKED THIS FOR SO LONG. IDEAS COME FROM ALL OVER THE PLACE. WITH JIMMY, IT CAME FROM A STUDENT I HAD WHO--YEARS LATER--DIED IN A CAR CRASH. I MAY SOMEDAY MAKE A SEQUEL, BUT I LIKE NEW PROJECTS. OFTEN I FIND SEQUELS NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST BOOK, AND THEN THEY SORT OF RUIN THE FIRST BOOK FOR ME. DON'T WANT TO DO THAT.

In your book Night Hoops what you would change in the story and why.
Thank you
Bailey THAT'S A TOUGH ONE. WHEN I FINISH A STORY, I MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ONE. I SORT OF THINK OF THE FINISHED STORIES AS FRIENDS OF MINE WHO HAVE MOVED OUT INTO THE WORLD. SO, REALLY I WOULDN'T CHANGE ANYTHING MAJOR, THOUGH I'M SURE I COULD GO THROUGH AND SHORTEN IT. I GET TOO WORDY SOMETIMES.

Dear Mr.Deuker what would you say would be the theme for your book "Swagger"? Thank you THE THEME IS THAT EVIL EXISTS IN THE WORLD, AND THAT SOMETIMES (OFTEN) IT HIDES ITS FACE CLEVERLY.

I want to know the main problem and solution of the story YOU DON'T GIVE ME THE NAME OF THE BOOK, AND I THINK YOU CAN FIGURE THOSE TWO THINGS OUT ON YOUR OWN. JUST READ A LITTLE EVERY DAY, AND YOU'LL GET THERE (:

when will u have a new book
I JUST SENT IN A NEW BOOK TO THE PUBLISHER, SO I'M HOPING THAT IN FALL OF 2016 IT WILL COME OUT.

Dear Mr.Deuker, what is your favorite book that you wrote? thanks.
Evan Dean HELLO EVAN, THE FIRST BOOK -- ON THE DEVIL'S COURT-- WILL ALWAYS BE A GREAT FAVORITE BECAUSE IT WAS A DREAM COME TRUE. I NEVER THOUGHT I'D WRITE A BOOK THAT ACTUALLY GOT PUBLISHED.

where can I send a letter that will get to carl deuker? EMAIL ME, AND I'LL BE GLAD TO GIVE YOU AN ADDRESS. NOT KEEN ON POSTING IT ON-LINE

what were the characters in the book YIKES! NO NAME OF THE BOOK PROVIDED. DID YOU READ ONE?
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Dear Carl Deuker,

I read your book, Gym Candy, and found a tiny error. On page number 226 paragraph three, it says that Mick Johnson has a total of eight touchdowns, three of which were scored in the last game. And on page 213 paragraph four, it said he scored six touchdowns. If I did the math right, wouldn't that make it nine touchdowns not eight?

Sincerely, one of your biggest fans
Austin
YOU DID YOUR MATH JUST FINE. THAT'S SIMPLY A MISTAKE. GOOD FOR YOU TO CATCH IT. I'VE GOT ANOTHER BOOK (ON THE DEVIL'S COURT) WHERE THERE'S A BIG EVENT THAT HAPPENS ON FRIDAY NIGHT. THE NEXT CHAPTER STARTS, "THE NEXT DAY AT SCHOOL . . ." I HATE THE LITTLE SLIPS, BUT THEY HAPPEN.

what is rising action for your story and also the falling action Is your book Payback Time considered a banned book? If yes, why was it banned? I HAVE READ "GYM CANDY". I FELT LIKE THE EPILOGUE WAS COMPLICATED. I FELT LIKE MICK WAS STILL TROUBLED EVEN THOUGH HE GOT PROFESSIONAL HELP. Mr.Decker, Don't you think On the devil's court, you are suggesting that selling your soul to the devil is an option? Hey i just finished reading "swagger" and just wanted to know why you never really made clear Jonas' and Celias relationship. We never really got to hear Jonas' feelings about her in a "more than friends" kind of way. There were definitly hints that he had feelings for her, and at the end of the book he actually did wonder if she was waiting for him to kiss her, but that was really it. I was actually hoping for them to develope into a couple throughout the story but it never happened. Just think it would add another dimension or element to the story. I loved the book anyway but just wondered about this. Z.C Hi what is the theme exactly for the book you wrote Runner? thanks! love your books sir I love on the devils court i just finished your MOST greatest fan evan scott hi im antwan what was your purpose in writing night hoops what was the idea that mad u write that book Hi Mr. Deuker my name is Ben and I chose you for my author project, can you tell me what inspired you to become a writer? hi my name is jaden ploeger why did you decide to become an author why did you decide to become an author Hi Carl Deuker, my name is Chris and i live in New Jersey and i read your book Gym Candy and i loved it, i thought it was absolutely amazing and i thought the ending was a foreshadowing to a second book and i was wondering if you were going to make a second one? hello my name is justice and I loved gym candy I just finished it today I have a question will there be a second book to it this year or next. MOST IDEAS COME FROM THINGS THAT HAPPENED TO ME OR FRIENDS, OR THINGS I READ ABOUT. GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE BOOK************************* I liked Gym Candy but i don,t think it covered up enough about Mick's relationship with Drew and how he acts in high school and maybe college. Please make a sequel, i am almost positive that many other people are waiting for the sequel to come out. Thank you, and I hope you take this in to consideration. I just have a question about the book, and I hope you don't mind maybe answering some of them. The question is about Shane's dad. Even though it was hard for Shane and his family, was it hard for you to take an important character out of the book early? GOOD QUESTION. I ACTUALLY PLANNED THAT RIGHT FROM THE START, SO I WAS READY WITH THE ACTION AFTERWARDS.*************** What is the tone in your book, Gym Candy? ALL IN ALL, IT'S A SOMBER BOOK.********* I have a question about your book, Runner. Why haven't you made a movie of this book? I would like that because this book was the first one to make my head start jumping to read more. You are a great author. MOVIES ARE RARELY MADE BY WRITERS. I WOULDN'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE A MOVIE. NOW, IF A MOVIEMAKER CALLED, I'D CERTAINLY DO EVERYTHING TO HELP THEM. *************** what does payback mean in your book. How does it relate to your book? A COUPLE OF THINGS. THE PHILLY PEOPLE WANT TO PAYBACK ANGEL. MITCH WANTS TO GET BACK AT ANGEL. AND THEN MITCH PAYS BACK HIS MISTAKE BY HELPING ANGEL. SO IT WORKS AS A TITLE IN A BUNCH OF WAYS*********** The book I read was runner. it was a really good but what happens to Chance afer he inlist to the army? Did you every thought that would Chance would get married or if he would of stay with Melissa how would that of affected him. Or would it be like what you said in the book? Did he stay in touch with melissa and her family. MY GUESS IS THAT HE WON'T MARRY MELISSA. THEY ARE FROM DIFFERENT WORLDS. I THINK HE-LL BE A SUCCESS IN THE ARMY, COME OUT, AND GET ON WITH HIS LIFE. I ALSO THINK HE'LL FIND HIS MOTHER.*(************** I have read the book Runner and my favorite thing about the book Runner is when chance found the packages in the rocks and how he sunk the packages in his bag pack and then they thought that is was drugs in the packages. They did not know what it was until the end. i could not wait until i found out. Did they ever meet again or nothing ?? NOT FOR A WHILE, BUT MY GUESS THEY EVENTUALLY WOULD MEET UP.****************** I love how interesting the book Runner was, on every page there was something new happening. THANKS FOR WRITING. I BELIEVE I ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION VIA EMAIL. I HOPE YOU GET AN A+ ON YOUR REPORT. ********************* Hello i m Wyatt and I just want to know what our writing process is like. HELLO WYATT. SORRY TO TAKE SO LONG TO ANSWER. SUMMER LAZINESS. I WRITE IN LOOPS. I'LL WRITE ABOUT 50 PAGES, GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING, CLEAN IT UP, GET A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT I'M TRYING FOR, THEN WORK OUT TO PAGE 100, GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING, ETC. THE BEGINNING GETS REWRITTEN MANY TIMES, BY THE END I HOPE I'VE FOUND THE VOICE. ******************************* what inspires you I JUST LOOK FOR A GOOD IDEA,SOME CONFLICT THAT IS INTERESTING TO ME. I TRY TO WRITE A LITTLE BIT EVERY DAY, RATHER THAN HAVE ANY LONG WRITING PERIOD. *********************************************** What was the purpose of the character Brent Miller? Was it to show a character who was a more loyal military person than Chance’s dad was supposed to be? Was war one of your big themes? BRENT MILLER WAS INTENDED TO SHOW THAT LIFE IS PRETTY COMPLICATED. CHANCE DOESN'T LIKE BRENT AND BRENT DOESN'T LIKE CHANCE BECAUSE THEY BOTH KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT THE OTHER'S LIFE. BUT BRENT ISN'T A VILLAIN, AND HIS DEATH IS TRAGIC. CONFUSING TO CHANCE--AS LIFE OFTEN IS. Why didn’t you make Runner have a happy ending? Why did you end the book the way you did? IT'S NOT AN ENTIRELY SAD ENDING. I WANTED TO SHOW THAT PHYSICAL BRAVERY STILL HAS A PLACE IN THIS WORLD, AND THAT A MAN THAT PEOPLE DISMISS AS A DRUNK CAN ACTUALLY POSSESS GREAT COURAGE. Are you going to write a sequel? What happened to Chance after the book ends? I MAY SOMEDAY WRITE A SEQUEL, BUT I'D NEED A GOOD IDEA. Why did you frame the book with a hint at the ending on the first page? Why did you structure the book to have very short chapters? And why did you choose to have three parts? THE HINT IS A BIT OF A HOOK, TO LET THE READER KNOW FROM THE START THAT THERE IS SOME DANGER IN THE BOOK. I'VE WATCHED MY STUDENTS READ. SOMETIMES I'VE SEEN THEM FLIP AHEAD TO SEE HOW LONG A CHAPTER IS. IF IT'S LONG, THEY PUT THE BOOK DOWN. SO I TRY TO BREAK UP THE BOOK INTO SHORT CHAPTERS SO THAT READERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO KEEP READING. THE PARTS JUST COME WHEN IT FEELS LIKE SOMETHING HAS SHIFTED OR HAS ABOUT TO SHIFT. What was your reason for writing Runner? What was your purpose – were you trying to tell young adults about something? I SUPPOSE THE THEME IS--WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING WE TAKE PART IN. CHANCE THINKS HE CAN JUST DELIVER THAT PACKAGES AND BE REMOVED FROM ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT'S IN THE PACKAGES. KIDS SOMETIMES THINK THEY CAN JUST 'GO ALONG' SO LONG AS THEY DON'T PERSONALLY DO ANYTHING. DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY, AT LEAST IN MY OPINION sooooooooooooooooooo, where could i send you a letter, im Jacob. HELLO JACOB, SEND ME AN EMAIL USING ONE OF THE LINKS, AND I'LL SEND YOU MY ADDRESS. OR, YOU CAN SEND A LETTER TO HOUGHTON MIFFLIN PUBLISHING COMPANY AND IT WILL EVENTUALLY GET TO ME. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& What are some creative things about you I DON'T KNOW THAT I'M ALL THAT CREATIVE. I HAVE A DECENT IMAGINATION AND I'M A HARD-WORKER. I GUESS MY BEST SKILL IS THAT I KNOW MY OWN WEAKNESSES, SO I KNOW WHAT TO CUT FROM MY STORIES. ************************************************ Who is your favorite character from your books? THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION. I GUESS I'D GO WITH CHANCE FROM RUNNER. HE'S A LOST SOUL THROUGH NO FAULT OF HIS OWN. NOTHING MUCH WORKS OUT FOR HIM, BUT HE'S OPEN TO CHANGE AND HE LEARNS FROM HIS MISTAKES. ********************************* can you make a soccer book I'M WORKING ON A BOOK RIGHT NOW THAT HAS A CHUNK WITH SOCCER AS THE MAIN SPORT. CHARACTER PLAYS SOCCER AND THEN IS RECRUITED TO BE THE KICKER ON THE FOOTBALL TEAM. SO, I'M TRYING. ********************************************** How much money do you make? I GET ABOUT 10% FOR EVERY HARDBOUND SOLD, AND I GET ABOUT 7% FOR EVERY PAPERBACK SOLD. THE AMOUNT OF MONEY DEPENDS ENTIRELY ON THE POPULARITY OF THE BOOK. HEART OF A CHAMPION HAS SOLD STEADILY FOR 20 YEARS. PAINTING THE BLACK DIDN'T SELL AS WELL. *************************************** How old were you when you published your first book? I WAS 38.******************************** Gym Candy was one of the best books I've ever read I play football myself and it's really inspiring. Keep doing what your doing! THANK YOU. IF I EVER GET A GREAT IDEA FOR A SEQUEL, I'LL WRITE ONE. BUT A LOT OF SEQUELS AREN'T AS GOOD AS THE FIRST BOOK, AND I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THE GOOD FEELING OF GYM CANDY WITH A LOUSY FOLLOW-UP.************************************************** Hello, it's me, the girl who doesn't like sports novels but enjoyed The Runner. I was going to read your recommendation, Payback time but the only Carl Deuker book my teacher had was Gym Candy. I decided to give it a shot and I have not regretted it since!! I know I said before that I don't like sports books but there is something about your style of writing that made reading it worthwhile. I can't say that I'm a sports reader but I can say that I enjoyed Gym Candy, despite my preferences. It was amazing! Thank you so much again for being a writer and I hope that my teacher will be able to get some more of your wonderful books so that I can read them. (Fan of Carl Deuker) YOU MADE MY DAY. I'M GLAD TO KNOW THAT A NON-SPORTS FAN ENJOYS THE BOOKS. I USE SPORTS AS A VEHICLE TO TACKLE OTHER TOPICS, MY HOOK SO TO SPEAK. I have been stuck on this for about an hour its the last thing I have to write before I type my essay. Any suggestions? YES. GO TO THE SCENE WHERE LEVI TELLS THE MAIN CHARACTER HIS SECRET. YOU WILL FIND THAT THE MOVES INTO THE SHADOWS AS HE SPEAKS. THE THEME OF SHAME/NOT WANTING TO BRING THINGS INTO THE LIGHT/ IS REINFORCED BY HIS PHYSICAL ACTION OF MOVING INTO THE DARKNESS. THEN, HE TAKES OFF, NOT GOING HOME WITH THE MAIN CHARACTER. THIS FITS, TOO. HE'S BREAKING THE CONNECTION, THE FRIENDSHIP. THIS ACTION, THE OPPOSITE OF BEING A TEAMMATE, ILLUSTRATES ANOTHER THERE--PEOPLE NEED OTHER PEOPLE. TRYING TO DO THINGS ALONE LEADS TO TROUBLE. (THANKS FOR TELLING ME ABOUT THE EMAIL LINK. I'LL TRY TO FIX IT.) hey my names Keri, I'm doing a book report on "Swagger" and I'm having trouble figuring out "The Action That Shows Theme". Please Help!! My english teacher has assigned my class to read your book and complete a project on it. I read your book gym candy. One part of this project is to email the author of the book i chose and ask the author a few questions about there book. I would love to get a response from you to include in my final project. Here aRe the questions i would like to ask you. What inspired you to write this story? THERE WAS A SUICIDE IN TEXAS INVOLVING A BASEBALL PLAYER ON STEROIDS. THAT GOT ME GOING. How long did it take you to write this novel and what research did you do to prepare to write this book? BOOKS TAKE ABOUT 2.5 YEARS FROM BEGINNING TO PUBLISHING FOR ME. I DID LOOK AT A LOT OF WEBSITES ON STEROIDS--VERY CONFUSING STUFF. What is your favorite part of the story and why? I LIKE THE SCENE WHERE MICK IS STOPPED BY THE LINEBACKER. IT JUST SPEAKS TO ME OF THE POWER OF SPORTS. TWO GUYS GIVING IT THEIR ALL, BUT ONLY ONCE CAN WIN. **************************************************************** your books suck SORRY YOU DON'T LIKE THEM. I'D SUGGEST YOU READ SOMEBODY ELSE. They have been coming to me every day wanting to talk about the book. I finished reading it last night. The ending brought me to tears. I can't wait to talk more about this book today with my kids! I HAD A HAPPY CHILDHOOD, AND HAPPY CHILDHOODS ARE BY AND LARGE BORING TO READ ABOUT. SORRY.******************************************** what is an example of bravery in the book Runner? THE CLEAREST EXAMPLE IS CHANCE'S FATHER. AT THE END, HE TAKES ON THE TWO TERRORIST--GIVING HIS OWN LIFE TO PROTECT OTHERS. (A LARGE PART OF THE BOOK CONCERNS CHANCE LEARNING, SLOWLY, TO BRAVELY TAKE ON THE CHALLENGES OF HIS LIFE. THE BOOK ENDS WITH THE SENSE THAT HE WILL BE BRAVER, BUT HE DOESN'T DO MUCH THAT IS BRAVE IN THE BOOK.) **************************************************************************************************************************************************************** what is your inspiration for writing all of your novels? what has helped you to complete them and keep you going? THAT'S A REALLY GOOD QUESTION. I SUPPOSE I LIKE TELLING A GOOD STORY, AND I LIKE SETTING UP SITUATIONS WHERE A PERSON IS FACED WITH A CHARACTER-DEFINING MOMENT. AS FAR AS WHY I'M ABLE TO KEEP GOING, I'D SAY IT'S THE POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM READERS MORE THAN ANYTHING. YOU HEAR ABOUT PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY'D WRITE NO MATTER WHAT. I'M NOT SURE I COULD DO THAT. BUT WHEN I WRITE SOMETHING, AND PEOPLE LIKE IT, IT ENCOURAGES ME TO WRITE MORE. *************************************************************** what is ryans main character traits HONESTY AND COURAGE, FINALLY. HE DOES THE RIGHT THING AT THE END BECAUSE HE CAN'T STAND TO THINK THAT HE'S ALLOWING AN INJUSTICE TO GO. SO HE DOES THE HARD THING, BUT THE RIGHT THING. I need help coming up with an idealism quote for my project from the book, "Payback Time." THIS IS HARD FOR ME BECAUSE I'M NOT YOU. BUT I THINK THE PASSAGE NEAR THE END WHERE MITCH SAYS HE'S GOING TO BE "DANIEL" SHOWS THAT HE'S DONE WITH THE NEGATIVE SELF ESTEEM STUFF THAT CAME WITH "MITCH." ************************************ hello. I am not going to say my name so you can just write him. I need to know as soon as possible if you wrote mike Anderson in the book heart of a champion and the page number. THAT SOUNDS LIKE A NAME I HAVE USED, BUT I WOULDN'T KNOW FOR SURE, AND I CERTAINLY DON'T KNOW THE PAGE NUMBER. I HAVEN'T READ THAT BOOK IN MANY, MANY YEARS. ******************************** in your book "heart of a champion" did you write mike anderson in it SEE ABOVE ************************************* Mr Deuker, I just read runner and I am struggling with trying to find the symbolism..would it be the packages represent evil? and for a universal theme could it be poverty, social issues like patriotism and terrorism..how do you know..please help for my book share group meeting I THINK YOU'VE GOT IT NAILED PRETTY WELL. I'D SAY THAT NOT OPENING THE PACKAGES SYMBOLIZES HIS DESIRE TO BE UNINVOLVED. THE BOAT, TOO, SYMBOLIZES THAT CHANCE AND HIS FATHER AREN'T REALLY CONNECTED TO THEIR COMMUNITY. BUT YOUR IDEAS ARE VERY GOOD. **************************** Mr. Deuker - A student and I were noticing certain settings places, and things - like the Lincoln were showing up in multiple books. Is there a reason behind this? I am a 7th grade reading teacher in Texas and you are my go-to guy for boys to love reading!! Thank you! YES. I LIVE IN BALLARD AND MOST OF THE PLACES ARE REAL. I NEED TO SET MY BOOKS IN PLACES I SEE FOR ME TO GET A REAL FEEL FOR MY CHARACTERS! ********************************* what is the theme of the book runner in kid words WE ARE ALL PART OF THE WORLD AND WE HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT WE DO. ******************************* Hello, Mr. Deuker, My class reads On the Devil's Court. We have a running debate about Ross. Following the description of the white bench issue at the golf course and the lack of physical description of Ross, we were wondering if he is African-American. It seems there are some racial overtones with the cross burning and bench. Just wondering! Thanks! Sarah Quinn NO, HE'S NOT AFRICAN-AMERICAN. I DON'T DO MUCH WITH PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION, DO I? NOT MY STRENGTH. THANKS FOR USING THE BOOK! ******************************************** Hello Mr. Deuker! I am teaching On the Devil's Court to a class of 7th graders, and we are wondering why Joe is suddenly bothered by the fact that the grapes he's eating are from India (Pt. 3, Ch. 8). They suggested he feels guilt about receiving a treat, but there seems to be something about India that specifically bothers him. Have we missed something in the reading that would clear this up? Thank you! OH, I WOULDN'T SAY YOU MISSED ANYTHING. I WAS BEING TOO CLEV ER. IF YOU GO BACK TO THE SCENE WHERE JOE DESCRIBES THE PLAY "DR FAUSTUS" YOU'LL FIND A SCENE IN WHICH JOE NOTICES THAT DOCTOR FAUSTUS WASTES HIS POWER DOING STUPID THINGS. ONE OF THE STUPID THINGS FAUSTUS DOES WITH HIS POWER IS TO GET GRAPES FROM INDIA. SO, WHEN JOE'S MOTHER HAS GRAPES FROM INDIA, HE SEES THE PARALLEL AND THINKS THAT HE, TOO, HAS SOLD HIS SOUL TO THE DEVIL. YOU AREN'T THE FIRST GROUP PUZZLED BY THE SCENE, SO CLEARLY I SHOULD HAVE ADDED A SENTENCE. SO, TELL YOUR STUDENTS THAT WRITING NEVER ENDS . . . I WISH I COULD EDIT THAT PART. THANKS FOR USING MY BOOK IN CLASS; FEEL FREE TO ASK MORE QUESTIONS. ************************************************************************** WHO IS THE ANITAGONIST---That's just a fancy name for the character who causes the main character the most trouble. What character causes the conflicts? Answer that question and you've got the antagonist. ************************************ my name is dominic and i just finished reading runner. It was a very exciting book. my question is will you ever write a sequel to runner? i hope so!! THANKS, DOMINIC. IF I GET A GOOD IDEA, I DEFINITELY WILL. _____________________________________ Mr. Deuker its Lane Koch-Michael. My girls and I are moving back to Bothell in the Spring. Look forward to reading Swagger. You're still one of the best teachers I have ever had. I feel super lucky to have had you for my fifth grade teacher. Hope all is well. Maybe we will cross paths in the near future. Keep writing. HELLO LANE, GREAT TO HEAR FROM YOU! PLEASE STOP BY SHELTON VIEW WHEN YOU RETURN AND I'LL GIVE YOU A COPY OF SWAGGER-- THOUGH YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF. I DON'T THINK YOU LOOK QUITE THE SAME. IN THE LAST CHAPTERS, LOOK FOR SOMETHING WHERE HE REVEALS THAT HE'S LEARNED SOMETHING, THAT HE'S NOT SO COCKY. ___________________________________________________ What kind of person is chance? ONLY JOSH KNOWS--AND IT WAS ACTUALLY ATTEMPTED RAPE. 8****************************************************** Hey Mr. Deuker, I love your books, and as a Puget Sound teen, I like reading about athletes in a setting I know well. I think you should write a book about wrestling, and tie in an eating disorder with the main charater who tries to stay at a weight class much lower than his natural weight in hopes of being more successful. Eating disorders are often joked about and not really taken seriously so I think it'd be cool if you shed light on that topic. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good writing! THAT IS AN EXCELLENT IDEA. I WILL DEFINITELY PUT THAT ON MY TO-DO LIST. I REMEMBER WRESTLERS IN MY HIGH SCHOOL GOING INTO SAUNAS JUST BEFORE WEIGH-INS. LOSE WEIGHT, LOSE STRENGTH, GET DEHYDRATED. GREAT IDEA. THANKS ************************************************** I really loved your book, Heart ofa champion and what do you think the climax is? CLIMAX WOULD BE DEATH OF JIMMY. MAJOR INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE WAS THE ANIT-WAR MOVEMENT AROUND VIETNAM. **************************************** Do your books of basketball have to do with the move of blasting? NOT FAMILIAR WITH THAT TERM. ################################################### What is the theme in a heart of a champion? I'D SAY THAT THE BOOK'S THEME IS THAT LIFE CAN BE CRUEL. JIMMY ISN'T A BAD KID. LOTS OF KIDS DO STUPID THINGS AND GET AWAY WITH THEM. BUT NOT ALL KIDS. 8************************************************************* Im doing a storyboard on you becuase i love most of your books and it inspires me. But i cant find a question that i have to include on my storyboard. The question is, How do you come up with your book ideas? Can you answer this as quick as you can becuase im almost out of time. Thank you. IDEAS COME FROM MY OWN LIFE, FROM THE NEWSPAPER, FROM FRIENDS, FROM STUDENTS. I JUST HAVE MY ANTENNAE OUT ALL THE TIME FOR THINGS THAT SOUND INTERESTING. ********************************************************* Just got done reading the book runner and I need to know the theme and a quote that could relate to it. Can you help me out? SURE. THE THEME IS ABOUT RESPONSIBILITY. CHANCE'S FATHER, MOTHER AND CHANCE ALL DEAL WITH THAT TOPIC. I'LL LET YOU FIGURE OUT THE SENTENCE. AS FAR AS A QUOTATION GOES, THAT'S ENTIRELY UP TO YOU. LOOK AT THE LAST FEW CHAPTERS--IS THERE A SENTENCE IN THERE THAT JUMPS OUT AT YOU? IF ONE DOES, THEN THINK WHY AND WRITE IT DOWN. ONE OBVIOUS PLACE WOULD BE WHEN CHANCE SEES HIS FATHER JUST BEFORE HE GOES BELOW DECK ON THE SAILBOAT. ******************************************************** I just got done reading your book and I need to know the theme and a quote that can relate to it. Can you help me out? BUT, YOU DON'T TELL ME WHICH BOOK. I HOPE YOU ARE THE PERSON WHO WROTE ABOVE. ********************************************************* what fears does mitch have to overcome in payback? MY SENSE IS THAT MITCH DOESN'T HAVE SELF-CONFIDENCE. HE THINKS OF HIMSELF AS A FAT LOSER, SO HE HAS TO LEARN TO BELIEVE IN HIS OWN WORTH. **************************************************************** what are some of the awards have you won. MY BOOKS HAVE WON STATE 'BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARDS' IN TENNESSEE, PENNSYLVANIA, IOWA, SOUTH CAROLINA, AND NEBRASKA (THREE TIMES). MY BOOKS HAVE BEEN NOMINATED IN MANY OTHER STATES. ********************************************************************** Will there ever be a sequel or movie for Gym Candy? I would love to see Gym Candy as a movie it's my all time favorite book THAT REALLY ISN'T UP TO ME. IT WOULD TAKE A FILMMAKER TO READ THE BOOK AND DECIDE THAT IT WOULD MAKE A GOOD MOVIE, AND THEN DECIDING TO GO AHEAD AND MAKE IT. NOT TOO LIKELY, BUT THANK YOU FOR THE KIND WORDS. ************************************************************* what is reese's last name in High Heat? THIS WILL PROBABLY SURPRISE YOU, BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER. AFTER I FINISH WRITING A BOOK, I RARELY REREAD THE BOOK. I'D SEE ALL SORTS OF THINGS I WISHED I COULD CHANGE--AND I CAN'T CHANGE ANYTHING. SO WHEN I'M DONE, I MOVE ON. ************************************************************************ Excuse me but i am really trying to figure out the antagonist for Heart of a champion is it jimmy???? OKAY, I GUESS SO. YOU'RE RIGHT TO BE A BIT CONFUSED. HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING. YOU'VE GOT A SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT THAT IS MAKING YOU PLUG NAMES INTO CERTAIN SPOTS. PROTAGONIST IS ?????? ANTAGONIST IS ???????? IT'S NOT A BAD WAY TO EXAMINE A BOOK, BUT NOT ALL BOOKS FIT INTO THAT SCHEME. HEART OF A CHAMPION DOESN'T REALLY FIT. BUT, IF YOU HAD TO NAME AN ANTAGONIST, THEN I GUESS JIMMY WILL DO. HIS CONTINUED USE OF ALCOHOL THREATENS SETH WHO IS DEFINITELY THE PROTAGONIST. **************************************************** what is the mood? I'M GOING TO GUESS YOU'RE ASKING ABOUT HEART OF A CHAMPION. MOOD IS MELANCHOLY. ************************** Mr. Deuker how did you gather your information for Gym Candy? I DID A LOT OF INTERNET SEARCHES ON STEROID USE. WHAT I FOUND IS THAT THE WHOLE STEROID WORLD IS QUITE SCARY. I need to know the climax for a test and I am really struggling. I would really appreciate a fast response -Pierce is Fierce WELL, I'D SAY THE CAR INCIDENT NEAR THE END IS THE CLIMAX. I DON'T WANT TO GIVE AWAY THE STORY. ************************************************* if you could work with any author, who would it be? JOHN FEINSTEIN. Dear Mr Deuker, baseball is my life and when I read it I cried at the end. So I got all of my friends to read it and they all cried and agreed it was the best book they've ever read. My teachers and coaches all read it and loved it. This book changed my life!!!! thank you!!!Even a lot of girls I know have read it and absolutely loved it! I was wondering if your going to write another baseball book? And I think it would make a good book about any sport and the conflicts an athlete has to go thru to get to college and what a senior has to go through with leaving his friends and girlfriend and etc. Thanks soooo much- # I'M GLAD YOU LIKE HEART. I WROTE IT MANY YEARS AGO, BUT IT'S STILL IN PRINT AND IT STILL SEEMS TO SPEAK TO PEOPLE. I DO HAVE A COUPLE MORE BASEBALL BOOKS--HIGH HEAT AND PAINTING THE BLACK ********************************************************************** You should make a book that its about soccer and i have a name for it "Keeper" GOOD TITLE. BOTHELL, WA (A SUBURB OF SEATTLE) AROUND THE YEAR 2000. ********************************************************************* Hello Mr.Deuker , your book Night Hoops is fantastic. But i couldnt come across a good plot summary, can you help me? SURE. LOOK AT EAST SECTION OF THE BOOK, AND THEN IN TWO OR THREE SENTENCES, WRITE DOWN WHAT THE MAIN EVENTS IN THAT SECTION ARE. THAT SHOULD GET YOU A GOOD SUMMARY WITHOUT IT BECOMING TOO LONG. ********************************************************************* in the book night hoops.... can u list the characters, setting and plot summary? WELL, THE CHARACTERS ARE RIGHT THERE--TRENT, GABE, ETC. TAKE A LOOK AT THE QUESTIONS ABOVE YOURS AND YOU'LL GET IDEAS FOR HOW TO HANDLE THE OTHER PARTS. ################################################## what is the climax in this book ? I DON'T KNOW WHICH BOOK YOU MEAN. HOWEVER, LOOK AT THE LAST 30 PAGES OR SO. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT? THAT WOULD BE THE CLIMAX.************************************************************** Hello Mr. Dueker, I had one question to ask you. What was your inspiration to begin writing the book Runner? I SUPPOSE RUNNER WAS MOST INSPIRED BY THE EVENTS OF 9/11. I WAS WORKING ON GYM CANDY, BUT SPORTS SEEMED SILLY. I WANTED TO WRITE SOMETHING POLITICAL AND STILL WRITE A YOUNG ADULT NOVEL, SO LITTLE BY LITTLE RUNNER CAME INTO FOCUS. ************************************************************************* How many books have you writen that have not gotten published? also, do you have anyone proof your books before thay are published? I'VE ACTUALLY FINISHED ONLY ONE BOOK THAT HASN'T BEEN PUBLISHED. I HAVE FALSE STARTS, THOUGH.***************************************************************** Dear Mr. Dueker, I am a student that goes to University High School. I had to read a book in reading class and gym candy was suggested to me by my reading teacher. I liked this book because it was about football it explained drills and gave great details throughout the game. It shows that you have to be strong to achieve your goals but also be smart to. That you can’t make excuses to get by and try to blame things on other things or people. Also this book showed that you can lose your friends in a matter of days and get them back with just a simple phone call or ride home. You can lose a girl by just not going to hang out with them. Then it shows responsibility and that nothing is just going to get handed to you that you have got to work for what you get. He works for money and works to pay off the jeep his dad gave him and he pays for his own stuff. Guns are dangerous so you have to be careful with them and his dad trusted him with the gun and use it for self protection only trying to commit suicide but to be careful. I thought the end of the book was surprising because I never thought he would have missed when he shot himself. This was a really good book and I liked it a lot. It was very good and believable. Most kids that want to get better take steroids especially the dumb ones. I was wondering if you were writing a book that I would enjoy reading or having a book that you would suggest for me to read. I will look forward to reading more books of yours In the future. Sincerely, Jason GLAD YOU LIKED IT, JASON. MY OTHER "FOOTBALL" BOOK IS PAYBACK TIME, SO YOU MIGHT GIVE THAT A TRY IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THAT AS A BACKDROP TO THE STORY. I'M GLAD YOU GAVE GYM CANDY SUCH CAREFUL ATTENTION. THANK YOU, CARL********************************************* Dear, Carl Deuker Hello my name is Daniel Acevedo; I go to University High School. I came to read this book when I was just looking through books, I read the summary and I thought it looked really good so I started to read it. Your book “Heart of a Champion” was a brilliant baseball book. There was really good information about teenagers. Since Jimmy and Seth first met they have been the best double play duo, Jimmy was an amazing shortstop and Seth was an average second baseman but they were perfect for each other. The first day they met in the baseball field they instantly became best friends. They practiced everyday with each other and Jimmy’s dad so they can be the best as can be. Even when they get mad at each other they overcome it really quickly and stay best friends! Jimmy was always better then Seth so Seth always had to work even harder so he can be on the same team as Jimmy. Then finally when they get to high school Jimmy makes the Varsity team and Seth makes the J.V team so Seth was furious which made him keep practicing by himself extra harder while Jimmy hanged out with his friends. I especially loved the twist that you made, which was that the best friends started from being the nicest and hardest working kids to starting to party and drinking a lot. I really enjoyed this book. I also read one of your books called “Painting the Black” and that book recommended by my amazing reading teacher was even better! And I am looking forward to your future work. Sincerely, Daniel Acevedo THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS, DANIEL. I'M GLAD YOU LIKED BOTH BOOKS. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I'M PLEASED WITH IS THAT NONE OF MY BOOKS ARE CLEARLY INFERIOR TO THE OTHERS. FOR BETTER OR WORSE, THE QUALITY IS ABOUT THE SAME. KEEP READING!++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mr Deuker, I am doing a project on you for my eighth grade language arts class. I would love to do a paragraph about what inspired you to become an author. So, what did inspire you? I'D SAY THE SONGS OF THE ROLLING STONES AND BOB DYLAN MADE ME REALIZE THAT WORDS COULD BE VERY POWERFUL. AFTER THAT, I READ BOOKS WITH A CLOSER INTEREST. I PARTICULARLY LIKED THE WAY JAMES JOYCE USED WORDS IN HIS BOOK PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN. FINALLY, I'VE ALWAYS LIKED TO TELL STORIES, AND I EXAGGERATE MY STORIES TO MAKE THEM ENTERTAINING. ************************************************************************ Good afternoon, Mr Deuker! I have a question for you today. I am your BIGGEST fan (without a doubt). I understand you teach sixth grade at Shelton View Elementary. Well one of my teachers said that we will do a project type thing invoving making boxes for a single pringle and mailing them to each other. We just need a teacher from out of our state (NJ). I said that my favorite author is a teacher and she said that if you agreed, we would make it happen. So can you please do this with your class and mine??? YES, THIS LOOKS LIKE A FUN PROJECT. I'VE BEEN IN TOUCH WITH YOUR TEACHER. IT'S ON. ************************************************************************** Hello my names is Bryan I am in 10th grade and i am writing a report on you and i was wondering if any of your books are ever going to become movies? THAT'S NOT UP TO WRITERS. RATHER, A FILM WRITER OR DIRECTOR WOULD HAVE TO READ MY BOOK AND DECIDE IT WOULD MAKE A GOOD MOVIE. I'VE HAD A COUPLE OF FEELERS, BUT NOTHING HAS COME OF IT. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& IM writing a paper on you and i was wondering what inspired you to write sports books? I LIKE TO PLAY SPORTS, I'VE DONE SOME COACHING, AND AS A TEENAGER I LIKED TO READ BOOKS ABOUT SPORTS. SINCE I WANTED TO WRITE, IT WAS A NATURAL CHOICE. ONCE I GOT A BOOK PUBLISHED, I STAYED WITH IT. ************************************************************Is it easier for you to write fiction or non-fiction ALL IN ALL, NON-FICTION. I CAN THINK IT THROUGH, FIGURE OUT THE POINT I'M TRYING TO MAKE, AND GET THERE. IT MIGHT NOT BE GREAT NON-FICTION, BUT IT'S PRESENTABLE. FICTION IS ABOUT PEOPLE, AND PEOPLE ARE UNPREDICTABLE, SO YOU HAVE TO THINK: "HOW WOULD THEY ACT?" NOT "HOW SHOULD THEY ACT?" THAT MAKES FICTION TOUGHER. ************************************************************ I just finished Night hoop and high heat. I really enjoyed them. What inspired you to write these books. Timothy NIGHT HOOPS WAS BASED ON SOME EVENTS OF A STUDENT I TAUGHT--THE SHOOTING ON THE TRAIL IS BASED ON A TRUE EVENT. HIGH HEAT IS BASED MORE ON MY OWN CHILDHOOD. THE FATHER OF A BOY DOWN THE BLOCK KILLED HIMSELF. I NEVER KNEW THE WHOLE STORY, BUT I KNOW IT WAS VERY TOUGH ON THE BOY. ################################################ Hello. I am a 8th grader currently reading Payback Time.. and i happened to google you up because i wanted to buy your books that i havent read, and i was wondering if "Swagger" is coming out soon? SWAGGER SHOULD BE OUT IN MAY OR JUNE. ******************************************************************************* Why and To who do you write your books? I WRITE THE KIND OF BOOKS THAT I WOULD HAVE WANTED TO READ WHEN I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL. THEY DEAL WITH BOYS AND SPORTS, SO BOYS ARE A NATURAL AUDIENCE, BUT I'VE HAD MANY GIRLS WRITE AND TELL ME THAT THEY ENJOY THE BOOKS. ******************************************************************************* How do you get your inspiration to write books like gym candy and runner? GYM CANDY CAME PRETTY MUCH OUT OF THE NEWSPAPER. I READ ABOUT INCREASING USE OF STEROIDS AMONG HS ATHLETES AND THEN DID RESEARCH. RUNNER WAS A COMBINATION OF NEWSPAPER ARTICLES AND MY OWN LIFE. THERE WAS A MURDER OF A SMALL CHILD IN THE PHILLY NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE I SPENT A FEW SUMMERS. THAT REALLY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION. ****************************************************************************** For Night Hoops What happens to Trent at the end of the book? Does he go with his brother or does he stay? Or is it something we guess? GOOD QUESTION. BY COMING BACK TO FINISH THE GAME, HE CHOOSES HIS TEAMMATES OVER HIS BROTHER. HIS LIFE ISN'T EXACTLY STRAIGHTENED OUT, BUT HE'S ON THE RIGHT PATH. **************************************************************************** what is the theme of On the Devil's Court. OH, I'D SAY SOMETHING LIKE -- YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN LIFE AND HOW YOU LIVE IT. DON'T THINK THAT OTHER PEOPLE (ROSS) OR THE SUPERNATURAL CAN SHOW YOU THE WAY. YOU'VE GOT TO FIND YOUR OWN WAY.************************************************************************* hey Carl im in the 8th grade and i have a project and i was wondering if i can get a biography from you for my project from what inspired you to write the book gym candy and how your life was and if it had anything to do with why you wrote the book ACTUALLY, THERE IS A BIOGRAPHY LINK AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE AND THERE IS ALSO A LINK ON THE PAGE TO AN INTERVIEW. IF YOU READ THOSE AND STILL HAVE A QUESTION, EMAIL ME AT cdeuker@gmail.com ******************************************************************************* What is the climax of gym candy I'D SAY THE SCENE ON THE BEACH AT THE VERY END. DON'T WANT TO GET TOO SPECIFIC OR I'LL RUIN THE ENDING FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T READ IT. **************************************************************************** this book was really go and i enjoyed it. Please keep writing!!!!!! THANKS, I INTEND TO KEEP WRITING. WISH ME LUCK IN GETTING GOOD IDEAS ***************************************************************************** I am a high school teacher who needs to suggest a summer reading book for boys 15-17. Is Playback Time too young for that age boy? Is it too easy a read? Thank you, Mrs. H @@@@@@@@@@@@@ HELLO MRS. H. I'D SAY NO AND NO. The book level often comes out low on those scales because much of the book is in conversation. That translates into short sentences and that makes those "scales" label the book as easy. I think you'll find that boys will like the book, and I suspect you'll find that there is good fodder for discussion/debate. (You have my permission to skip/scan the football sections.) ************************************************************************** hi my name is kort i was reading ur book payback time and i have a book report due tomorrow and i dont get what the falling actions 1-3 are or the solution can you please help me HELLO KORT. I DON'T CHECK THIS PAGE EVERY DAY--MORE LIKE ONCE A WEEK. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS TOO LATE, BUT: FALLING ACTIONS IN PAYBACK TIME WOULD BE THE RECOVERY FROM THE BEATING, THE NON-DATE WITH KIMI, THE ANTICIPATION OF COLLEGE, ETC. ANYTHING AFTER THE CLIMAX. THE SOLUTION, I'M ASSUMING, IS THE SAVING OF ANGEL. **************************************************************************** Carl, why do you write these kind of books to the readers? WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER, I LIKED TO READ AND I LIKED SPORTS, BUT THERE WERE NOT MANY BOOKS WITH SPORTS THEMES. SO, AS AN ADULT, I WRITE THE KIND OF BOOK I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO READ. ***************************************************************************** Mr Deuker is my teacher this year! (As if you'd believe me) WELL, I BELIEVE YOU. *************************************************************************** I have to do a book project about this book lol anyways.. whats the setting? YOU HAVEN'T TOLD ME WHICH BOOK. THAT SAID, EVERYTHING I'VE WRITTEN (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF HEART OF A CHAMPION) IS SET IN SEATTLE IN MODERN TIMES. ************************************************************************* will you try to get your books turned into movies???? i think the movie would be a huge success THAT'S NOT UP TO THE AUTHOR. WHAT HAPPENS IS A FILMMAKER READS A BOOK AND DECIDES HE/SHE WANTS TO MAKE A MOVIE. THEN THE CONTACT THE AUTHOR. SO FAR, ALTHOUGH I HAVE HAD A FEW CALLS, NOTHING HAS COME OF THEM. I'M ALL FOR A MOVIE, THOUGH! ****************************************************************************** why did you pick Night Hoops to be the name it is now? I LOOK FOR THESE QUALITIES IN A TITLE: INTERESTING, SHORT, EASY TO REMEMBER, CONNECTED TO THE STORY. NIGHT HOOPS HAS ALL THOSE QUALITIES. THE FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN THE BOYS DEVELOPS AT NIGHT WHILE THEY ARE SHOOTING HOOPS--A NATURAL TITLE. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& summary of the story I DON'T KNOW WHAT STORY YOU MEAN, BUT THAT'S NOT A QUESTION I CAN ANSWER FOR YOU ANYWAY. YOU HAVE TO DECIDE FOR YOURSELF WHAT EVENTS MATTERED TO YOU. EVERY READER WRITES A DIFFERENT SUMMARY OF EVERY STORY BECAUSE WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT PEOPLE. ***************************************************************************** I am currently a 8th grader I'm not typically the type to read lot but I couldn't stop reading this book I was wondering if you are going to make a sequel? I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK YOU ARE REFERRING TO, BUT SO FAR I HAVEN'T WRITTEN ANY SEQUELS. SIMPLE REASON IS THAT TOO OFTEN SEQUELS AREN'T AS GOOD AS THE FIRST BOOK. I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THE FIRST ONE WITH A POOR SECOND ONE. ************************************************************************* Hi Mr. Dueker, I really enjoyed reading heart of a champion and runner. I am a 7th grade student and i just recently finished runner and I am working on book report and need to know what inspired you to wright runner? Also I wanted to let you know those two books were very, very profound and that I play travel baseball myself and i am not a huge reader but your books are just so phenomenal. Thanks so much. RUNNER WAS INSPIRED BY THE EVENT OF 9/11. I WAS WORKING ON SWAGGER, THE STEROID BOOK, AND IT SEEMED UNIMPORTANT. I WANTED TO WRITE A POLITICAL BOOK, BUT I ALSO WANTED TO WRITE A YOUNG ADULT BOOK. AS I WAS JOGGING ONE DAY, I SAW A BOY PULL A PACKAGE FROM SOME ROCKS ABOVE THE BEACH, AND THAT GOT ME GOING. GLAD YOU LIKED MY BOOKS. ************************************************************************** Hello i am an eighth grade student I have currently read Gym Candy. I don't really like to read but I couldn't put this book down. I also read heart of a champion I loved it. Are you currently writing a new book? YES, SWAGGER SHOULD COME OUT IN THE SPRING. *************************************************************************** Hi Im Nasiir And Im trying To Do a School Test Can You Help me With A Few Answers, Is The Central Conflict Internal Or External? 2Examples Of Foreshadowing? Mood Of Story? 2 Examples of irony? Tone Of Story? Central Theme? All Of These Question Are Directed To The Wonderful Book Runner NASIIR, I'LL POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, BUT I CAN'T DO YOUR TEST FOR YOU. 1. CONFLICT IS A BIT OF BOTH, BUT ANSWER THIS QUESTION: DOES CHANCE HAVE MORE INNER DOUBTS ABOUT WHAT HE IS DOING OR MORE FIGHTS? WHAT TAKES UP MORE PAGES? 2. HIS MAIN GOAL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR IS TO STAY OUT OF THINGS. WHAT'S IRONIC ABOUT THAT GOAL BY THE END? 3. MOOD: HERE ARE SOME WORDS--HAPPY, OPTIMISTIC, TENSE, PESSIMISTIC, SAD. CHOOSE ONE AND THEN THINK DESCRIBE WHY YOU THINK IT FITS. 4. THEME: CHANCE WANTS TO REMOVE HIMSELF FROM LIFE AROUND HIM. DOES THAT WORK? 5) I'LL GIVE YOU THIS ONE BECAUSE IT'S DIFFERENT. I'D CALL THE TONE "CONVERSATIONAL." I TRIED TO MAKE IT SEEM AS IF CHANCE IS TALKING DIRECTLY TO YOU, AS IF THERE ISN'T AN AUTHOR, JUST A GUY TELLING HIS STORY. GOOD LUCK! I Need Help I'm Not Even Going To Begin Asking Until I Know Someone Is Really Listening Though. WELL, I CHECK THIS ABOUT EVERY FOUR OR FIVE DAYS UNLESS I HAVE A DEADLINE FOR A BOOK. Mr.Dueker, I've been a huge fan of your books for a long time i have read them all and i'm wondering... are you going to write another one soon?? - Derek R. HELLO DEREK, I HAVE A NEW BOOK -- SWAGGER -- COMING OUT THIS SPRING. THANKS FOR READING THE OTHER BOOKS. Is there any irony in the book runner? THE BASIC IRONY IS THAT CHANCE WANTS TO AVOID INVOLVEMENT WITH OTHERS, AND HE ENDS UP DEEPLY INVOLVED IN MATTERS THAT ARE OF CONCERN TO THE COUNTRY AND WORLD. Have you been awarded anything? YES, I'VE WON SEVEN BEST YOUNG ADULT STATE AWARDS. THREE TIMES IN NEBRASKA (MY FAVORITE STATE!), AND ONCE IN IOWA, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TENNESSEE. What kind of awards and honors have you recieved? In the book runner, could you please explain the setting a little more SETTING USUALLY MEANS TIME AND PLACE: SO, THE TIME IS EARLY 21ST CENTURY, AND THE PLACE IS IN AND AROUND SEATTLE, WA. HI CARL :D I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! YOUR SO AMAZING!! I WISH I COULD HUG YOU SOO BAD ;) YOUR SUCH A GOOD AUTHOR ;) Mmm, I LOVE YOUR BOOKS WITH A PASSION. AND YOU OF COURSE!! ;) bye bye CARL :) lOVE bethany & Megan ;) What is the falling action? I'M NOT SURE WHAT BOOK YOU MEAN. PAYBACK TIME? IN THAT CASE IT'S MITCH'S RECOVERY AFTER BEING BEATEN UP. IF IT'S NOT PAYBACK TIME, ASK AGAIN AND INCLUDE THE BOOK. What inspired you to write Heart of a Champion? I HAD A STUDENT WHOSE LIFE MIRRORED JIMMY WINTER'S. THE SETH BARHAM CHARACTER IS BASED ON MY OWN CHILDHOOD. how did you develope the characters in gym candy? I STARTED WITH A NEWSPAPER STORY ABOUT AN 18 YEAR OLD BASEBALL PITCHER (AND STEROID USER) WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE. I SWITCHED THE SPORT, AND THEN TRIED TO IMAGINE HOW HE GOT THERE. Remember me ? I still love you YES, I DO REMEMBER YOU. NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN, AND THANK YOU FOR NOT SPAMMING THE SITE. I HOPE THINGS HAVE BEEN GOING WELL FOR YOU. Are there any video interviews with you online? I will be showing your website and books to our 8th grade students next week and would like to include an interview. THANKS FOR SHOWING THE WEBSITE. THERE AREN'T ANY ON-LINE INTERVIEWS. I HADN'T THOUGHT OF THAT, BUT I'LL TRY TO GET THAT DONE SOON. I HOPE YOUR STUDENTS ARE ENJOYING MY BOOK. Mr. Deuker, could you please write a sequel to Gym Candy?! I read the whole book in 3 hours because it was fantastic. I'm dying to know what happens to Mick in the future! Thanks ! I MAY WRITE A SEQUEL SOMEDAY. I NEED TO HAVE A GOOD IDEA FOR THE STORY, THOUGH. I WOULDN'T WANT TO RUIN IT WITH A CRUMMY SEQUEL. who is the protangist person in the story I DON'T KNOW WHAT STORY YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT. Dear Mr. Deuker, I am doing a school project and need to know a couple of things. Did you have good grades when you where a kid and how many family members do you have. I HAVE A WIFE, A DAUGHTER, A SISTER, A NIECE, A NEPHEW, AND A BUNCH OF COUSINS IN PHILADELPHIA WHOM I DON'T SEE ANYMORE BUT DID VISIT WHEN I WAS A CHILD. YES, I HAD GOOD GRADES. I WANTED TO GO TO COLLEGE FROM A VERY EARLY AGE, AND I ALWAYS ENJOYED ALL ASPECTS OF SCHOOL. Hello Mr.Deuker gym candy was the best book i ever read thank can not wait to read more of your great work THANK YOU. I JUST FINISHED SWAGGER, WHICH WILL BE COMING OUT IN SPRING. What are some examples of foreshadowing in Runner? I love your books! NEWS THAT MILLER WAS KILLED IN IRAQ FORESHADOWS THE FACT THAT THE PACKAGES AREN'T JUST DRUGS. GLAD YOU LIKE THE BOOKS. what is a powerful qoute about the book runner THAT'S A QUESTION YOU NEED TO ANSWER FOR YOURSELF. I KNOW IT'S HARD BECAUSE I TRY TO MAKE THE BOOKS SEEM CONVERSATIONAL. THERE ISN'T MUCH IN THE WAY OF "LITERARY" LANGUAGE. HOWEVER, IF THERE'S A PASSAGE THAT STRIKES YOU, SIMPLY COPY IT DOWN AND EXPLAIN WHY IT MATTERED TO YOU. Do any chracters grow or change over the course of Night Hoops I THINK SO. NICK COMES TO UNDERSTAND HIS FRIEND, AND HIS FRIEND DECIDES THAT IT'S BETTER TO BE PART OF A TEAM THAN TO BE OFF WITH HIS LOSER BROTHER. (SORRY, I CAN'T REMEMBER THE CHARACTERS' NAMES!) I just read "Painting the Black" I loved it! I am wondering who was with Josh when they attacked Monica Roby? I really want to know! THAT'S A QUESTION THAT GETS ASKED A LOT. ONE OF THE TEAMMATES, BUT IT'S NEVER STATED IN THE BOOK AND ONLY JOSH KNOWS. I DON'T EVEN KNOW. How many pages are there in runner YOU CAN GET THAT FROM AMAZON.COM. I DON'T HAVE A COPY WITH ME RIGHT NOW. I just finished reading Runner. It kept my heart racing and it was AMAZING. What message would you send the readers? THAT WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR ACTIONS. YOU CAN'T JUST "NOT LOOK IN THE PACKAGE" AND CLAIM TO BE INNOCENT. CHANCE IS INVOLVED, AS HE DISCOVERS. Hey Carl, I LOVE every single one your books. I emailed you in the spring asking when your new book Swagger would be released, and if I recall you Said fall? Anyway, any updates on progress/release date? Thanks, can't wait! SPRING! would you be apposed to making painting the black into a moive>
I'D LOVE TO SEE IT MADE INTO A MOVIE.
mr.Deuker you baseball stories are my favorite. Have you ever thought about writing one about a kid who wants to be a pro umpire?
THAT'S A COOL IDEA. HE COULD START OUT AS A PLAYER, THEN DECIDE THAT HIS ONLY CHANCE OF MAKING THE BIG TIME IS AS AN UMPIRE. I HAD NOT THOUGHT OF IT, BUT NOW I WILL LET IT PERCOLATE.

Well, How long did it take for you to write Gym Candy? ABOUT 2.5 YEARS FROM BEGINNING TO PUBLICATION
