Creative Non-Fiction Sampler

Here’s a sample of a few non-fiction assignments I’ve taken on over the years.

“Dearest Elizabeth” (Live Magazine, June, 1997) in which I send letters home from a Civil War battle re-enactment at Gettysburg.

“Lure of the Flies” (Live Magazine, August, 1997) in which I interview a trout in Montana.

“A Trip to Die For” (Live Magazine, April, 1996) in which I take a murder mystery train from L.A. to San Diego.

“Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Cowboy” (Live Magazine, April, 1997) in which I get cheese on my hat, then meet and conquer a horse during a Western Festival in Colorado.

“The Twilight Zone” (Wondertime, April, 2007) in which I become a zombie for a parenting magazine.

“Outfoxing the Radish Patrol” (Outside Magazine, May, 1986 – reprinted in Out of the Noosphere, the Best of Outside Magazine, Fireside, 1998) in which I return as an over-the-hill grown up to go camping one last time with my Boy Scout troop.

“My First Will and Testament” (Esquire, Oct., 1989) in which I divide my estate before actually having one.

“The Castle of St. George at El Mina and the Problem With Heritage” (Iowa Review, spring, 1998) in which I journey to Ghana to learn about my heritage vis a vis slavery and that whole O.J. Simpson thing.
