2012 Spring Meeting
At the Seaside with Jane Austen Saturday, May 19, 2012 9:00AM - 4:00PM Annenberg Community Beach House at Santa Monica State Beach 415 Pacific Coast Highway Santa Monica, CA 90402 This five-acre oceanfront site, originally developed in the 1920s by William Randolph Hearst for actress Marion Davies, featured an opulent mansion of 100-plus rooms and an ornate marble swimming pool designed by Hearst Castle architect Julia Morgan. After the property was severely damaged in the Northridge Earthquake of 1994, The Annenberg Foundation provided a grant for the rehabilitation of the historic Guest House and pool, as well as construction of new recreation and event spaces. The renewed facility which opened to the public as TheAnnenberg Community Beach House in 2009 provides a truly unique venue for our JASNA SW Spring Meeting, examining both the architecture of Jane Austen’s era, and her real-life as well as literary connections to the sea.
