In March 2010 I traveled with Raúl to Aix-en-Provence, France where I presented a paper on impunity and the struggle for justice in Latin America. He presented a paper on the long fight against impunity in Guatemala.

URUGUAY

A favorite city, Montevideo is lovely and tranquil, with beautiful architecture, parks, and fountains, warm people and a nice quality of life.

ARGENTINA

Another favorite city, Buenos Aires, is flourishing, with musicians, tango and gaucho dancers, and artists everywhere, wonderful cafes and restaurants, and beautiful architecture. High energy and cosmopolitan, Buenos Aires is dramatically different from the early 1990s, when I first did research there and the shadow of the military regime was still pervasive.

GUATEMALA

Guatemala is a spectacular country with a difficult history of military violence and foreign intervention, resistance and rebellion. Guatemalans continue to struggle for their rights in the midst of severe living conditions, daily violence and social injustice, and political obstacles to positive change.

SAN FRANCISCO 2008

In June 2008 I co-taught a graduate course with Raúl Molina Mejía (my husband and colleague) at the University of San Francisco. The course, “Human Rights in Latin America: The Cold War Era,” was an intense and satisfying experience for all concerned.

COSTA RICA

Costa Rica is a lovely country, rich in flora and fauna, including the animals pictured here and many more. We saw Resplendant Quetzales on two separate days in the cloud forest of Monteverde--a magical experience!
