...ABOUT JUDY SEMAS (Business Career Milestones) She was recognized as Outstanding Business Woman in Northern California by the American Business Women's Association (1987). Semas has moved up from the ranks of secretary to business executive - TWICE. In one instance, she moved from temporary secretary to president/CEO in just over one year. As a result of a business project she undertook on her own initiative, she was promoted to bank officer at the age of 26 in 1968 - a time when: _ Only a relative "handful" of women had achieved management positions in the U.S. _ Virtually all U.S. business clubs and organizations were exclusively male. An accomplished public and motivational speaker, Semas has been in demand for more than 20 years to address a wide variety of groups: _ Business organizations _ Women's organizations _ Charitable and not-for-profit organizations _ Professional organizations _ Political and public service organizations _ Community organizations Audiences for her presentations have numbered as many as 2,000 people. Governments have awarded Semas resolutions of commendation attesting to her business management and leadership skills: _ U.S. Congress _ California State Legislature _ Several Silicon Valley cities for her work at HOPE Rehabilitation Services (HOPE). _ HOPE is a $15 million-dollar, multi-facility, regional, not-for-profit organization providing vocational, counseling, and other daily services to thousands of children and adults with developmental disabilities, with a paid staff of about 150 employees. _ It is the largest organization of its type in the United States. Semas was its President and CEO for approximately 10 years. _ When Semas was appointed to head the organization, it was half its present size - and on the verge of bankruptcy - with virtually no community visibility or support. _ HOPE's dramatic turnaround under Semas's leadership received widespread publicity. _ Semas personally secured HOPE's first million dollar cash donation. _ Semas personally drafted, lined up legislative support for, lobbied, testified before legislative committees, and secured passage of two California laws benefiting HOPE and many thousands of people with disabilities - TWICE: _ Against strenuous opposition _ Under two governors from opposing political parties - one a Republican (Ronald Reagan) and the other a Democrat (Jerry Brown) _ With only one vote cast against the bills in both houses of the California Legislature each time. Stanford University wrote up HOPE's turnaround with Semas at the helm, as its first Business School case study of a not-for-profit organization , to serve as a management model for other community service organizations While Semas headed HOPE, it was selected as Outstanding Rehabilitation Agency in California for the FIRST time in its 30-year history. It also achieved the highest level of national accreditation for the quality of its programs and services to people with disabilities. A multi-year appointee to the U.S. President's Committee for Employment of the Disabled, Semas has been dubbed in the media: "a hero" ..."an inspiration"..."a savvy businesswoman with a heart"..."a dynamo" - and she has mentored hundreds of women over the years, helping many to become managers and executives (especially those who lack a college degree). For more than 20 years, Semas has been listed in numerous "Who's Whos": _ International Directory of Distinguished Leadership _ International Authors and Writers Who's Who _ International Who's Who of Professionals _ The World Who's Who of Women _ Foremost Women of the 20th Century _ Who's Who of U. S. Executives _ Who's Who of Finance & Industry _ Who's Who of Women _ Who's Who of Emerging Leaders _ Who's Who of The West _ Who's Who of American Women _ Who's Who in Professional Speaking _ ...and others She has been recognized by The National League of American Pen Women as one who has "Achieved Professionalism in Letters, Music, and the Visual Arts."
