American Dissidents: Encyclopedia of Activists, Subversives, and Prisoners of Conscience

This two-volume encyclopedia covers 20th and 21st century Americans. In a few cases, the individuals profiled lived most of their lives in the late 1800s, but their activities carried over to the 1900s and influenced later generations,and a great many are active today. The 152 Americans featured are meant to represent diverse ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds as well as various movements and ideologies. Included are authors, anarchists, civil rights advocates, communists, entertainers, environmentalists, government officials, labor organizers, libertarians, military personnel, muckrakers, pacifists, political activists on the left and right, religious leaders, women suffragists. Some of them have been labeled subversives, and others have been jailed and are known as political prisoners or prisoners of conscience.
