Rafi and Rosi

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

"Magic Fingers"
Growing up in Puerto Rico I was totally enchanted by the adorable and elusive coquν tree frog. So, one summer while I waited for my daughter, then taking an art class, I decided to sketch coquνes. For two weeks I sketch tree frogs, until Rafi and Rosi surfaced on the pages of my skethbook. I knew the stories would be about the relationship between a big brother and his little sister.

Rafi's antics are modeled after my husband's childhood memories. Rosi has a little of me in her. The stories are set in the island of Puerto Rico, a setting that allows me to share a bit of the natural beauty and culture of the island.

After I had sketched Rafi and Rosi many times, and written and revised the stories, I created the art. My illustrations were made with watercolors on watercolor paper. I used a sepia watercolor pencil for the outlines of my characters. I think the sepia line, that sometimes bleeds into the characters, gives them warmth.
